Magic.

To any onlooker, it might seem blissful being able to do anything you want with a snap of your fingers.

But magic is too overpowered to not have any consequences.

Take Vexes for example.

Anyone who has Vex magic might lose control of their power at any time and become aggressive.

After all, Vex magic is best used in PvP situations.

But imagine this dynamic of balance when applied to the most powerful beings in Minecraft.

It becomes a recipe for disaster.

That's where the Watchers come in.

Powerful beings with magic much greater than everyone else.

The gods of Minecraft, essentially.

Now, the Watchers were once a good society, always looking for ways to improve the blocky world.

But, that counterbalance had to take effect.

And it did, dooming our world of basic survival in the process.

You see, the counterbalance dealt with their insane amount of power by taking away their mental stability, making them insane.

I was lucky enough to escape before I was fully initiated into the Watcher society, making it so the counterbalance didn't take away my sanity.

My drawback was only that I could go insane for periods of time, but not fully insane.

I was still immortal and was forced to watch the Minecraft players die.

These innocent people didn't deserve to die so quickly, trying to get used to the constant changes to their world for the worse.

So, I created the respawn feature.

This way, humanity wouldn't go extinct in a couple of years.

This angered the rest of the watchers greatly.

I lived my eternal life on the run, helping the players as much as I could.

Wait- I haven't introduced myself yet, have I?

Well, my name is Xelqua Charles Grian.

I am the one who invented the elytra, to give players better ways to travel.

I am the one who constructed shulker boxes, to give the players better ways of transporting their items.

I am the one who created ender chests, as a way for players to have private items.

You may notice how all of the examples I mentioned are 'endgame items'.

That's because of the counterbalance.

The players need to work harder for the items that have more value.

To be honest, I kinda agree with this part of the counterbalance.

Actually, I agree with all of the ideas within the counterbalance.

I probably should talk about what the counterbalance is a bit more.

You see, the counterbalance is actually a group of people consisting of Fate, Destiny, Work and Reward.

Destiny and Reward are fairly nice almost all of the time, while Fate and Work can be cruel but still kindhearted.

I work alongside them a lot.

They are sorry for what happened to the Watchers, but can't reverse it.

I've been doing this job with just them to help for a while now, anyway.

I don't know how being thrust right back in with the Watchers would feel.

Now, we were preparing for the next big update.

It was set to release a couple of days from now, actually.

Ring.

My phone!

It was from Reward.

I quickly answered.

"Yes, Reward?" I asked.

"We need you at the base immediately! There's an emergency!" They said, an urgent tone to their voice.

"If I was needed for an emergency, wouldn't Work be calling me instead of you? You're literally opposites!" I replied, raising my eyebrow.

"I- Hang on a sec." They said.

"He's onto us, what do I do!" They shouted, seemingly to the others in the counterbalance.

Silence.

"Xelqua? You there?" It was Destiny now.

"Yes, I'm here," I replied, waiting for whatever weird stuff was going on.

"Just humour us and come, alright?" They asked, a pleading tone to their voice.

"Fine," I said, rolling my eyes at their antics.

I hung up.

Well, I guess I'm heading to the base now.

If you're wondering why I called both Reward and Destiny 'they', it's because all of the counterbalance identifies as non-binary.

Time skip to when Xel is at the base

"So what am I here for?"

The members of the counterbalance shared looks.

"Well, we may have gotten you a place in a server because we felt that you needed a break?" Reward said with a shy chuckle.

"You WHAT!"

"I mean, you're going. We already booked everything. The server is called Hermitcraft, and everyone knows that someone new is coming." Fate chimed in, a stubborn expression on their face.

I took a deep breath.

"You know what, fine."

I actually really like this AU and might work with it in the future.

Bye!
