'Hello... I'm Angel Kali... born the 14 of May.' Angel spoke stiffly, behind him the usual cloudy, grey sky, only with the wind more hoarse and muddy leaves crashing into their faces. Lukyo had agreed to record Angel's voice after being told that he sounded American. Yearning to hear from her father as soon as possible, and waiting for Halloween to arrive she wanted to distract herself from all the tension.
'Angel... You're... You're not... I can assure you that you sound American but as soon as I turned on the camera you just verted back to your Italian accent.' Lukyo says.
'It's a psychological thing, then. I just didn't know what to sa-'
'That's it! That's it! Keep going!' Lukyo shrills.
Angel, even more rigid then before, his shoulders closed, with his head down. 'Ah-I am a witch... My element is water.'
'Nope!' Lukyo says, irked. 'I feel like I'm talking to a tree trunk. Talk to the camera as if you're talking normally to me.'
Angel remained quiet for a moment. A few years back he had a lot of speech problems. He would talk to fast and that no one would understand him. He was completely aware of it but no matter what he did, he couldn't slow down to save his life. Once they had moved to England Glenn convinced their parents to hire him a private tutor for him, Mia Lucas. She had the standard British accent, she could also do American, Irish, Canadian, Australian and French accurately and no one would ever be able to tell that it was fake.
Angel is trying to remember what his warm up exercises that Mia had encouraged him to do everyday were, which he did, but over the years English became almost like his native language that they never crossed his mind again. At the beginning he was unbelievably nervous and embarrassed about speaking in front of others, especially new people that he'd never met.
He gently inhaled for four seconds, instead of exhaling and letting the breathe out he spoke. 'I am Angel Kali. I am eleven years old. I am home-schooled.'
'That was much better. You sounded a bit dead and bored but you still sounded like your regular self.' Lukyo says.
Angel was relieved that he was able to do it but he couldn't comprehend what she meant by that until she played back the video, also beginning to understand why at school he was always picked on by others. He didn't like to hear his own voice, though he could barely hear it due to the distressing wind, almost powerful enough to take them away, had they been any lighter. He watches a lot of television and is aware that usually when voices are recorded the sound ear-shredding compared to real life.
'Lukyo. Do I always look a bit dead and bored when I'm talking?' He asks agitated.
'With other, yeah, you do. But with me, not so much, no.' Lukyo said, feeling special.
Two hours later they had managed to get Angel to speak properly to the camera for longer than a minute, neatly articulating well-structured sentences. With all the bloopers that came about whilst filming they couldn't help but crack and few jokes and laugh so Angel didn't look as poker-faced as he normally does, but he felt extremely insecure about seeing himself smile, something about it to him felt unnatural, he wanted to stop watching immediately after ten seconds but was afraid that Lukyo would be angry after all that work.
Angel just remembered that when he first arrived here, in 1997, he had to a group project where he had to record himself with Lukyo and another one of their classmates, Heather Johnson. Angel hasn't forgotten about her. Especially because Lukyo mentions her about once a week. Heather wasn't very nice to either one of them, Lukyo always goes on and on about how worse she's gotten over the years, beginning to nickname her "whore", "slut" and "foul creature". Lukyo had once stated that Heather is the person that she hates the most in the world, that there is no way that she can stand her. From what Angel remembers she wasn't even that bad, she wasn't his favourite classmate but compared to the rest of the children in his old school, Heather was a saint.
