“You ate lunch with them?” Sam gasped as we unpacked my room the next day. It was Saturday, our one day free from classes and work. “Like a date?”
“No, not a date. It was an apology lunch.” I shrugged, tucking the sheethttp://www.wattpad.com/mystories?compose=true&id=95283026#s under my mattress. “Thanks for helping me do this.”
“Well, I know you won’t do it properly on your own. It always took you two months to unpack after moving into our dorms.” Sam rolled her eyes, organizing my desk. “So now you’ve talked to them for real. Are they wonderful?”
“Yeah, I really like them. They’re genuinely nice guys. Dan’s really funny and cheeky and Phil is…” I trailed off, not sure how to describe Phil. “Well, he’s funny too I mean. It’s just he seems to not know what to say or something when I’m around.”
“Maybe he likes you.” Sam grinned, ducking as I tossed a pillow at her.
“He doesn’t like me.” I rolled my eyes “Well…at least I don’t think he does.”
“Hey, Nikki, your phone’s ringing.” Gia shouted from the living room. “I’m answering it!”
“No! Don’t do that! Gia!” I jumped off my bed in alarm, worried that she might be talking to my parents and fueling their idea that I ran away to London to become a drug addict or a hobo. “Gia, give me my phone.”
“Oh my god. Yeah, no, of course you can talk to her. You did reach her. This is her roommate. No, Gia not Sam. You have the right number. Funny thing, she didn’t leave it. We did. No, no, she wants to talk to you. Trust us.” Gia looked over my shoulder at Sam, a slap silly grin on her face. “Sam, it worked!”
“It worked?! YES!” Sam clapped her hands together.
“What worked? Who are you talking to?”I growled, ripping the phone out of Gia’s hands. “Hello, who is this” I demanded.
“Uh, it’s Phil…from work. You sound angry, I can call back.” Phil said quickly.
“Not angry at you.” I glared at my roommates. “But I think I might live in this apartment alone soon.”
“Run!” Gia screamed, grabbing Sam and rushing to her room.
“I’m really sorry. I found your note in my pocket and I decided to call you.” Phil said “But then Tia said it wasn’t actually from you?”
“Gia, not Tia, and I don’t know what note you’re talking about.” I frowned, plotting how to murder my two best friends.
“Well, I’ve got it right here. It says ‘thanks for lending this to me. You really are Amazing.’ And then it’s got your number.” Phil said “But I feel really stupid now since you didn’t leave it.”
I took a deep breath and looked out the window. Wasn’t coming to London about seizing opportunities? Being bold and just going for it? This was my chance. “I didn’t leave it, but I’m glad they did. I should’ve thought of that.”
“Oh thank god.” Phil sighed audibly “Well…I was thinking maybe…we could hang out again? It doesn’t have to be a date…your friends could come. Dan and I could show you around London.”
“You realize I have four other friends who are going to demand to come on this event, right?” I warned him.
“Four? How did you find an apartment that big?” Phil asked.
“I don’t live with all of them. Lauren and Jess bought one together, they’re dating. No one wanted to room with them.” I explained “But they’ll demand to come on this adventure.”
“No, no, that’s great. The more the merrier.” Phil didn’t sound so happy. It was silent for a long moment. “Actually, I kind of want to get you on your own, but I’m too chicken to tell you or ask you like a normal human being.”
“How about this? I pretend to be very angry at my friends and storm out and I’ll meet you at Flat Cap, do you know where that is?”
“Yeah, I’ll be there in like half an hour.” Phil said, his grin almost audible. “Why not just tell your friends that you’re coming to see me?”
“Because I want to make them pay.”I chuckled.
“Evil. I like it. See you soon, Little Intern.” Phil hung up and I resisted the urge to jump up and down screaming.
“Is it safe?” Gia called from her room.
“That was the most awkward and terrible thing ever!” I screamed at them, trying hard to keep a straight face as I grabbed my coat and purse. “I hate you both so much! You fucking suck! What gives you the right to give a boy my number in such a sneaky way? The poor boy!” I glared over at them as they cracked the door slowly, their heads peeping through.
“Where are you going?” Sam frowned.
“For a walk.” I muttered, grabbing my apartment keys and moving to the door.
“Wait, Nikki, we’re sorry.” Gia rushed forward.
“No. Just no. You totally freaked him out. He thinks I’m stalker now, thanks guys.” I closed the door behind me, not allowing myself to laugh until I was outside.
