“I have an idea.” Dan announced as he opened the door to his apartment that Saturday.
“Oh, good, because we don’t.” Sam said, pausing in front of Dan for a moment with an awkward smile on her lips.
“Well, it was Phil’s idea really.” Dan gave her the same stupid smile.
“Kiss or don’t kiss, it doesn’t matter, but you’re blocking the doorway.” Gia huffed.
Sam shot a glare over her shoulder and continued into the apartment while Dan’s cheeks flushed crimson. “What is Phil’s wonderful idea?” Lauren asked, following me inside.
“Well, I like challenge videos, so I was thinking we do boys vs. girls. We asked our subscribers to give us some challenges for both sexes. I thought we could do them and see which the superior sex is.” Phil smiled at me.
“We couldn’t decide between Americans vs. Brits or girls vs. boys. We decided it’d be best to do the countries one when Phil and I weren’t outnumbered.” Dan motioned us into the living room. “We’re gonna film in here.” He adjusted the tripod with the camera.
“Aren’t you guys fancy?” Sam looked at the setup. “We have to pile our textbooks up on top of each other to hold the camera.”
Dan laughed, though he quickly stopped as he realized Sam was serious. “You guys should maybe invest in one of those. They’re very useful.” He pressed the record button. “Okay, its recording. Everyone get on the couch.” He frowned as we sat down. “Uh, no, that’s terrible; someone has to get on the ground.”
I slid down so that I was sitting on the ground between Phil’s legs. Lauren got down beside me and so did Gia. “Better?” I asked.
“Yes. Perfect.” Dan crawled onto the couch between Phil and Sam. “Oh. Well, maybe you shouldn’t be there…the fans will talk.” He looked down at me. “Or you can frustrate the hell out of them.”
“I’m not moving. I’m comfortable.” I stretched my arms out, my head leaning against Phil’s knee. “Start your video, Sir Daniel.”
Dan looked into the camera. “Hey, guys, welcome to this video you had the misfortune of clicking on. Today I’m hanging out with some friends and we decided to do a little challenge. For those of you who don’t know, this is Phil from amazingphil.” Phil gave an awkward little wave. “And these are my American friends Sam, Gia, Nikki, and Lauren from 4girls1camera.”
“Hi.” We chorused.
“I asked you guys to tweet me a bunch of challenges you’d like to see during a boys vs. girls video and I’ve chosen my favorites to do. The first one is…” Dan scrolled through his phone. “Okay, I like this one. Arm wrestling. Now, I’m pretty strong, so I’m sorry girls, but the boys will win this one.”
Sam laughed “Are you kidding me? You couldn’t open a jar of pickles if you tried.” She reached an arm out to him. “Let’s go.” Dan took her arm confidently and within ten seconds Sam had defeated him. “Told you.” She tossed her hair over her shoulder.
“That wasn’t fair. We need a flat surface.” Dan huffed, moving to the coffee table with Sam only to be defeated just as quickly. “Why are you so strong?!” He complained.
“I lift dogs for a living.” Sam shrugged. “Do you want to try one of the other girls?”
“No.” Dan muttered. “Girls get one point.”
Phil chuckled, his hand absentmindedly playing with my hair. “Can I choose the next one?” he asked, taking the phone before Dan could agree. “Balance contest. See who can balance the most books on their head the longest.”
