Dan, Phil, and I had lunch every day that week. I started opening up to my other coworkers and the internship began to be a lot of fun. It wasn’t just because it was hilarious to flirt with Phil around Dan, but then deny anything was going on between us. It was genuinely nice to have friends at work. The work itself was just awesome. I was beginning to comprehend all the radio equipment and computer software and was really getting in to making my own content.
“Your phone is ringing! Stop leaving it places.” Gia shouted at me the Saturday after my first date with Phil. “I’m going to answer it.”
“Don’t you dare.” I growled, stealing the phone out of her hand. “Hello?”
“Hey, Little Intern, it’s Phil.”
“Who is it?” Gia asked eagerly “Is it Phil? Have you seen him again since the coffee incident? Nikki! Nikki, answer meeee!”
“It’s my parents, Gia.” I lied easily.
“I’m not your parent.” Phil laughed “Who’s listening in on us?”
“Gia. Sam’s probably lurking around the corner also.” I stuck my tongue out at Gia and moved to my room, locking the door and turning on my radio. “Alright, so what do you need, Phil?”
“Who says I need anything? Maybe I’m just calling to talk.” Phil feigned being hurt at my words, but I knew better.
“Phil, it’s Saturday, texting exists, and you hate phone calls.” I reminded him. “What do you need?”
“Alright, fine, I need help with a video. I’ll treat you to dinner afterwards?”
“What’s the video?” I asked “And why do you need help?”
“Ugh, Nikki, stop seeing through my lies. Fine, I want to make a video with you. With your whole channel. I don’t actually need help and I don’t know what the video would be. Mostly, I’d like to see you again, but I don’t like regular boring dates.” Phil chattered through the phone.
“Alright, alright, calm down.” I laughed “Have I told you you’re adorable when you try to be sneaky?” I rolled my eyes “Uh, let’s do a baking video. That’s something both our channels have in common and I’ve been dying to use our new kitchen. I was planning on making a cake so I’ve got the ingredients.”
“Are you sure you want to use your kitchen? It will be a mess.” Phil warned.
“Yup. It always is after I’m through. Bring Dan over why don’t you and I’ll tell my friends to get ready for a video.” I couldn’t help the silly smile that had formed on my lips at the idea of seeing Phil again outside of work.
“Do I still get to take you out to dinner?” Phil asked.
“Let’s see how much you destroy my kitchen. I’m texting you the address.” I teased before hanging up. “Sam! Gia! Get dressed!” I poked my head into the living room where they were watching Doctor Who. “We’re filming our cooking video early. I just texted Lauren.”
“Why do I have to get dressed? I don’t even help with those.” Same rolled her eyes.
“Because we’re going out afterwards. I’m sick of being in the apartment. Get dressed or you’ll regret it.” I winked then vanished to my room to shower and do makeup.
Half an hour later Gia and I had finally finished figuring out how to rig the camera for filming in the new kitchen. “I actually quite like this. It’s better than in the dorm kitchens.” Gia said, looking into the screen. “What are we making?”
“Rainbow unicorn cake.” I said, showing her the cake mold. As the doorbell rang I smirked wickedly ‘”Hey, Sam, will you get that?”
“Who the hell is coming over? Lauren already got here and we don’t know anyone else .” Sam grumbled as she went to the door and opened it. “Hello? OH MY GOD.”
I started cracking up and Gia just looked at me in shock. “What? Who’s at the door?” she asked, peeking around the corner and dropping to the floor as she saw Dan and Phil in our doorway.
“What is going on-why are Dan and Phil here?” Lauren asked, coming out of the living room.
“I see you didn’t warn them.” Phil said as I walked over. “That’s just cruel, Little Intern.”
“I thought it would be more fun if it was a surprise.” I shrugged, nudging Sam hard in the side. “Are you going to let our guests in? They don’t want to just stand in the hall.”
“Uh. Right. Right. Can I take your jackets?” Sam asked, reaching out to Dan, her green eyes as wide as a saucer.
“Thank you.” Dan said, handing her his leather jacket with a small smile. I tried not to laugh as Sam nearly melted into a puddle. “Uh, so, Nikki, Phil informed me we are apparently baking.”
“They’re in our video?” Sam squeaked.
“Technically you’re in ours.” Phil explained “I called Nikki to ask if she wanted to do a collab with me. I was internet stalking her and found your channel. You guys are great.” He also gave his coat to Sam and moved into our kitchen. “Oh, you’re right; it’s much bigger than ours. How’d you get such a nice kitchen?”
“It was a priority of mine. I need a lot of space to cook.” I shrugged “It was hard apartment shopping overseas though. Girls, Dan, come on; I want to get this started.” I looked at Phil “How do you want to do this? It’s your video…”
“Well, usually I start off with introducing Dan. So how about I do that, Dan starts to ask what we’re making and I say wait this requires more assistants and then you guys pop in. Is it all of you?” Phil asked “I’ve only ever seen you and Gia bake and Lauren just usually decorates with you guys.”
“Yeah, you don’t want me in the kitchen. I usually just help with lighting and clean up.” Sam admitted. “And editing. But if you two are in the video, I might have to brave it.”
“Alright, then 4 girls and 2 boys baking it is.” Dan smirked “Let’s get started. I’ll try not to destroy your flat too much. What are we making anyways?”
“Rainbow unicorn cakes.” I squeaked as Phil picked me up in a hug. “Oh my god! Put me down!”
“I knew I liked you, Little Intern. Rainbow unicorns.” Phil laughed “let’s get this started.” He shooed us out of the kitchen and turned the camera on. “Hey guys, it’s Phil and Today we’re going to be baking…”
