Please say she's okay. Please say she's okay. Please say she's okay.
"Please say she's okay, doc," your dad asks with a pleading voice.
You pinch your eyes shut and hold your breath.
"She had severe internal bleeding and lost a lot of blood. We had to take out her spleen but she's going to be fine."
Fine? Did he just say she's fine? Your eyes fly open. "Did you say she's going to be fine? She's alive?"
"Yes, Miss. It was touch and go for a while, we couldn't get the bleeding to stop, so we had to take out her spleen. She has a wrist and tibia fracture but we expect a full recovery."
"Oh god!" You exhale and start crying. A million emotions creep all over you and overwhelm you. Fear, relief, pain, sorrow, heartbreak, guilt. You fall to your knees and drop your head in your hands. Elijah drops down next to you and holds you tight.
"Thank you, doc, I can't tell you how much this means to me and my family and how thankful we are of you."
"It's my pleasure, Sir. She's a strong woman, she'll be just fine."
"All the women in our family are. You see, we lost our son in a car accident, nine years ago. This brought back painful memories."
"I'm so sorry for your loss. I can only imagine the pain and fear you must have felt today. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to give me a call. You'll be able to see her soon, the nurse will take you to her room any minute now. I'll be checking in on her tomorrow morning."
"Thanks, doc." Your dad takes doctor Stone's hand between his.
"Don't mention it. Just doing my job, Sir."
"You're nothing short of a hero, doc. Thank you."
He smiles at your dad. "See you in the morning."
Your dad crouches down next to you and holds both you and Elijah tight.
"Everything's going to be fine, sweetie. Mom will be fine. Before we know it, she'll be bossing me around again like nothing ever happened."
The three of you sit on the floor in each other's arms. You can't seem to get your tears and your breathing under control.
Elijah rubs gentle circles on your back and lifts your chin so he can look into your eyes. "Breathe, baby. Take a deep breath. You got this, remember?"
You take a deep but shaky breath.
"I can't believe we almost lost mom. And you know what the worst part is...I wanna say it's the most scared I've been in my life but because of all the shit we've been through, it's not. I've had it with being scared and being in pain and being heartbroken. If anyone else tries to die on me, I'll kill you!"
Your dad and Elijah chuckle.
"I wouldn't dare."
"Bossy and sassy, just like your mom. You've always been my firecracker."
You chuckle. "That's what Elijah always calls me. A firecracker." You all chuckle lightly. "We should let the guys and the girls know she's okay. Can you call them, baby? I'll call granny and pops. Dad, you can call uncle Nick."
The three of you grab your phones and you fill everyone in.
It's not long till the nurse comes and gets you to go see your mom.
Elijah puts both his hands in his front pockets and gives both you and your dad a shy smile. "I'll wait here for you guys."
"Don't be silly, son. She's gonna wanna meet you."
