IT had been just under a year and a half since the virus broke out amongst Atlanta. Just under a year and a half where Bonnie and Frankie were faced with the dangerous new world, where the dead rose and the living fought. The two girls had been staying in a car they found a few days ago, where it gave them an assured warmth and safety from the dangers of the outside world.
It was the middle of the night, Bonnie was sat up watching her surroundings as the moonlight reflected off the bonnet of the car the pair of blondes were cooped up in.
Bonnie cautiously watched the road where the car sat on, before her blue eyes rested on her niece and a soft smile made it's way onto her features. Her eyes perused across her innocent features, the girl's eyes seeing more than an adult would see in their lifetime.
Bonnie sighed before she adjusted her jacket that was draped over Frankie's shoulders, ensuring the girl was comfortable and warm in the chilly Atlanta night.
She cringed and retracted her hands quickly as her niece stirred in her sleep, watching as her eyelashes fluttered softly against her soft cheeks, before her eyes opened and stared up at the woman.
"Aunt Bonnie? Why aren't you sleeping?" She asked tiredly, shifting her head to angle up at her Aunt who she admired so much. Bonnie smiled as she leaned over and pushed some loose blonde hairs out of her face "I'm keeping watch... I'm sorry I woke you up." She frowned as her eyes looked down at her niece with love and care.
"You didn't wake me, it's ok!" She quickly replied as she sat up in the car seat before looking back over at her aunt and rubbed her eyes "Can I help keep watch?" She asked with hope.
Bonnie let a tight lipped smile make it's way onto her face as she nodded "Of course you can! I'll teach you how to be a pro watcher so you can do it when you are old enough."
Frankie nodded excitedly as she copied her Aunt's actions, her eyes roaming the surrounding environment as Bonnie lifted her arm up to check her watch, that surprisingly still worked, to see it was just shy of six in the morning.
"Aunt Bonnie," Frankie begun as Bonnie cast her attention to the sweet girl beside her with a hum "I have a good feeling about this place." Bonnie nodded before responding "Why's that baby?" Frankie shrugged as she leaned forward and looked out the windshield before pointing.
"There is a sign up there that might give us something!" Bonnie leaned forward and could just make out the sign in the dark. She looked over at her niece with a smirk "Damn girl you got some eyes, maybe it's you who should be on watch!" She winked at the girl before they sat and watched some more.
A little while later Bonnie turned back to her niece "Frankie," Bonnie began, the little girl turned to look up at her Aunt for what felt like the twelfth time that night "if we do find something today, I want you to promise me that if anything happens you will run. Run to the nearest car or house or place with people you can find and you join them. You promise me?"
The young girl nodded determinedly "I promise Aunt Bonnie." The adult nodded as she noticed the sun begin to rise beyond the thousands of trees around the pair and Bonnie sighed before readying the car to begin their travels.
She sat up, adjusting her seat as she double checked her knife was at her hip and started the car "Alright little one, check that you have your knife, pack your bag incase we need to make a q-" she was cut off by Frankie mockingly "-quick exit? Yes Aunt Bonnie I know!" She giggled causing the older woman to roll her eyes with a smirk as they took off down the road slowly to catch the sign.
"Use those good eyes of yours to search for the dead while I check the sign out, I wanna make sure you still know how to count!" Bonnie ordered, "Yes ma'am." Her niece replied, causing a light chuckle to come from the woman.
As they continued down the road and approached the sign, Bonnie slowed the vehicle down to a halt to read the contents. "Hitchhikers may be escaping inmates." Bonnie read out loud and scoffed in surprise.
"I counted twelve of the dead." Her niece spoke as the pair made eye contact and Bonnie grinned as she drove the car again down the long road, "You were right Frank about today being a good day! We might just have a home to stay at for awhile."
Frankie cheered excitedly as Bonnie turned the radio on and played the CD that was already in the system, her smile growing as Fleetwood Mac played through the car speakers.
She turned to Frankie with a grin before rolling down the windows and letting the wind flow through their blonde locks.
Today was a good day indeed.
