Ethan entered the small, 50s-themed diner with the ding of the bell on the glass door. He glanced up at the sound, then scanned the square room until his eyes landed on Y/N.She placed a stack of pancakes and scrambled eggs in front of the elderly man sitting at the counter on a red, faux leather stool. From a distance, Ethan can tell she told him to enjoy the food. He sighed and walked up to the counter, taking a seat three down from the man.
"I'll be right," Y/N looked up and met Ethan's eyes, panic washing over her as her pupils dilated. "With you," she finished her sentence. She disappeared into the kitchen and leaned against the wall. "Shit."
Ethan nodded and watched the door to the kitchen until she came back. It was the first time he had seen her since the night she was fired, two months ago. He only knew she worked at Polly's Diner because the manager called him when she was getting hired. Ethan was still listed as her number one reference on her resume because she assumed future employers wouldn't even bother to give him a call.
When Y/N emerged from the kitchen, she slapped on the biggest smile she could conjure up and approached Ethan.
"Hey," she pulled out her notepad and one of those mini green pencils they give you when you play miniature golf. "What can I get you?"
Ethan blinked repeatedly as he stared at her, trying to process seeing her again. His heart rate increased and his palms were sweaty but cold.
"Uh, coffee's fine," Ethan watched her slide the notepad into the front pocket of her apron. She grabbed a mug and the coffee pot, pouring the hot liquid in front of him. "How are you?"
"I'm...good," she nodded as if she approved of her answer. "How are you?"
"Could be better," Ethan mumbled and picked the mug up and brought it to his lips. He slurped the burning contents. "Holy shit, this coffee's amazing."
"Best in town," Y/N laughed quietly and refilled the old man's mug.
"Can we talk?" Ethan didn't want to beat around the bush. He didn't want to dance around the elephant in the room because if he did, he might puke.
"I'm working," she sighed and glanced around the diner at the empty red booths and clean tables.
"Come on, Y/N, you've been ignoring my calls for weeks, just talk to me," Ethan plead. Life without her was simply bland, and he still couldn't get used to not having her around.
"I know, take a hint," her smile was gone and replaced with an eye roll. "I don't work for you anymore, we have nothing to talk about."
"So you're telling me we weren't even friends?" Ethan scoffed. "Bull."
The old man raised his eyebrows as he poured more syrup over his half-eaten pancakes. He looked at Ethan, then Y/N, then took a large bite of his breakfast.
"Don't do that, don't try to make me feel bad," Y/N sighed. "You fired me, Ethan."
"It was the heat of the moment, Y/N, I was rejected by you, and I found out you were-"
