Nathan’s POV
When I finally get back to my house, I make my way up the path and all the memories of my life come flooding back to me. How am I supposed to live here, remembering that this was the place where me and Lu made so many plans. We made so many promises and now all that’s gone and so is she. I miss her more than anything in the world and I just wish I could have told her the truth. I didn’t want to lie to her about the bite. I should have just told her straight and let her believe I was a monster or crazy. That would have been better than this. I never wanted to hurt her and now I’ve done just that. I take a deep breath before unlocking the door and entering the house.
“Shit” I hear someone say from inside the house.
“Who’s here?” I ask. I’m scared until I remember that I’m probably the scariest thing someone could be. They can’t hurt me if they’re just human, can they? They can’t do anything to me, whereas I can slaughter them within seconds. I suppose it’s a good thing that Lu got away, isn’t it? I would have only ended up killing her and I wouldn’t have been able to live with myself if that had happened.
As I make my way through the house, I can smell something. The scent of whatever it is is making my mouth water. I blink and as soon as my eyes open again, my vision is blurred. Just like how it was when I killed for the first time.
“I just came to get my stuff, I’ll be going now” the words seem muffled and all I can hear is the loud noise of a heart beating. At that moment Lu appears in the door way, with a couple of suitcases. I close my eyes tightly and turn away from her. I don’t want to hurt her. Why did it have to be her? Why couldn’t it have been a burglar? That would have been easier. “Are you ok, Nathan?” she asks, sounding quite concerned.
“Get out” I spit. I can’t let her get hurt and I know that I won’t be able to control myself for much longer.
“How dare you, this is my house too, you know. Just because I moved out, doesn’t mean you have rights over it you know? In fact, in my opinion, I think you should have moved out. After all you were the one who cheated” she says, angrily.
“Please, it’s for your own good, just go” I tell her, still facing away from her.
“For my own good? What are you talking about?” she laughs.
“Just go!” I hiss and I can feel the blood rushing to my head. Why can’t she just leave? Why is she not listening to me?
“You’re really starting to annoy me now, Nathan!” she says, aggressively. I turn to look at her and before I can even think to stop, I dart toward her, so I’m standing directly in front of her.
“What are you doing? We’re over Nathan, don’t even bother trying to pull that one” she says, as she looks away. As she looks back up, her eyes meet mine and I feel myself leaning in, until the point where my lips are almost touching her neck.
All of a sudden, she pushes me away. As I look up again, she slaps me around the face before running out of the room. I soon hear the front door slam behind her. I blink again and my vision goes back to normal. What have I done? Now she’ll never come back to me.
Max’s POV
It’s so weird not having to sleep. Now at night, I just sit up and watch TV. It’s amazing the stuff they show at about four in the morning. It’s just the news or programs that have been on in the week, but instead of having it normal, it has that annoying sign language person in the corner and I can’t be doing with that. I suppose it means that I will never be behind with anything. I might start a novel. At that moment I hear a loud banging on the door. I get up to see who it is. I open the front door and it’s Shannen.
“Hey” I say, awkwardly.
“Can I come in?” she asks me.
“Fine” I tell her, as I stand aside. It’s stupid that we have to be invited into places. It’s so annoying. We walk into the living room and sit down. “What do you want?” I ask her.
“Vlad sent me. He’s giving you one chance. You're either with us or against us” she tells me.
“Well I’m with you of course” I tell her. I don’t really have a choice do I? I’m a vampire and so are they, so surly that would mean I have to be one of them.
“Good. He wants proof though. He wants you and the others to kill the dog” she smirks.
“What? That dog is my friend” I tell her, defensively. How can they even ask us to do that? I would never kill Jay.
“Well it’s either that, or Vlad and the others will kill you” he tells me.
“So what, we have to move?” I ask her.
“Well yeah, you need to go into hiding basically”
“What? But I thought you were my friend and now you’re teaming up with them?” I ask her, slightly annoyed at the whole situation.
“I’m not like you. I know what it’s like to be a vampire and it’s not easy” she tells me.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Well I’m just saying that when you’re new, you think you’re on top of the world, on top of the food chain and in a way we are, but we can still get killed, or even tested on. We need to keep to the shadows and feed on anyone that won’t be missed. I guess you think you can go dry though, right?” she asks, rolling her eyes. “I was the same, but if you run, you might as well push a stake through your heart right now, because Vlad is powerful, very powerful. He will find you and he will kill you and even if he doesn’t, someone else will. Vampires hate traitors. Ask anyone, they will tell you about the others and trust me, the stories aren't short of violence and death” she says.
“Well we can run we can get away from Vlad and the others” I tell her, but she just rolls her eyes again.
“You don’t understand, Vlad is just the tip of the ice burg. If you’re scared of him, you won’t survive two minutes. It's like he's the scrawny little drug dealer. Sure he might be scary and powerful, but if you get on the wrong side of him, you also get on the wrong side of his suppliers and they're so much more powerful than him. You will get killed out there. They're not stupid, they know exactly what you're thinking. There's no escaping them” she tells me.
“I don’t care. I’m not going to kill Jay. I’ll run and if they catch up with us, I will kill them myself and don’t tell me I can’t, because I’m a lot stronger than you think and I will prove you wrong” I say, standing up and scowling at Shannen.
“Fine, gather the others and go. Make sure you go far and don’t get seen. I won’t tell Vlad that you’ve gone, but eventually he will notice and he’ll start the chase” she warns me.
“Well I’m willing to do whatever it takes” I tell her, as I make my way out of the door. I have to tell the others. We have to leave. We have to get away from this place, it’s evil and there is no way, I’m going to kill Jay for those animals. I might be the same species as them, but I’m nothing like them.
