Mark had been pretty sure he was straight until the second day of junior year, when he caught himself daydreaming about his best friend's lips. Well, he was daydreaming about the cute way when Donghyuck was nervous, he would lick his bottom lip and then bite it - and then Mark's thoughts went "wouldn't it be nice to kiss his lips?"
Needless to say, that startled Mark out of the day dream and snapped his attention back to reality.
"Mr. Lee, would you answer the question on the board?" His teacher asked, and Mark looked up, confused.
"Kiss?" Immediately snickers were heard, and his teacher sighed.
"Mr. Lee, this is mathematics. Kiss is not the right simplified answer for eight minus five squared plus two plus five squared over nine minus three. Do you know the right one?"
"Give me a second - uh," Mark quickly did the math in his head, chewing his lip. "Negative twenty five over two."
"Correct. Thank you Mr. Lee, and please keep your head out of the clouds." Mark just nodded, trying not to think about how soft and pretty Donghyuck's lips - and Hyuck in general for that matter - were.
Math couldn't fly past fast enough, and when Mark walked out, he was greeted with, "Hey loser."
"Hello to you too Hyuck," Mark responded, his best friend beaming at him. Donghyuck was a sophomore, and probably one of the most chaotic people on campus. His outward appearance, with college crew necks and skinny jeans, was academic, but he had once started a battle to see who could make the hallways a bigger slip and slide with Chenle, another sophomore.
It hadn't ended well, and Chenle and Hyuck were given two weeks of detention and school service. "You'll never guess what happened today," Donghyuck said, grabbing Mark's arm and linking their arms together.
"You caught Jaemin and Jeno making out in the theatre room closet again." Mark guessed, and laughed when Donghyuck's face scrunched in disgust.
"No. Ew. Don't remind me of that, I would rather eat dirt then experience that again."
"You make it sound like you were a part of the kiss fest."
"Never. I don't kiss."
"Don't or haven't," Mark teased, and Donghyuck rolled his eyes.
"You know the answer. Anyways, no. You know YangYang right? The sophomore?"
"Yeah."
"He was at a locker today and being a nosy human, I looked and saw that he was standing with Renjun's back against the lockers and I really thought Renjun was going to stab YangYang but -" Mark had stopped listening, instead concentrating on how when Donghyuck's slight lisp appeared (a part of his accent from Jeju) he pouted more, his perfectly pink lips pursing as he tried to get the words out perfectly.
It was cute.
Wait. Mark froze for the second time during the day, staring at Donghyuck with an open mouth. "Is there a fly Mark?"
"No."
"Did you even hear my story?"
"Sorry," Mark muttered, and Donghyuck sighed dramatically.
"Let me begin from the beginning -"
"No," Mark fake cried, and Donghyuck rolled his eyes.
"Fine. Anyways, YangYang got Renjun to agree to a date -"
"No way."
"Yes way, that was the whole story and if I walk in on them kissing I promise I will throw Renjun's moomin collection into a fire and let it burn."
"Valid enough." The two of them arrived at their usual lunch table and Donghyuck let go of Mark's arm to get into his seat, noticing that Mark didn't have a lunch and instead pulled out a can of coffee.
"Is that it?" Donghyuck asked Mark, who shrugged. "Did you wake up late again?"
"Couldn't sleep this time, actually." Mark smiled wanly. "I was studying until late, then just couldn't fall asleep."
"You could've called me, I'd have come over," Donghyuck frowned, pulling out his wallet. "Here -"
"I have money," Mark immediately declined, and Donghyuck frowned just as Chenle joined their table, Jisung only a few steps behind him. Shotaro and Sungchan arrived less than thirty seconds later, Renjun popping up with Xiaojun at some point, Hendery and YangYang, and finally, Jeno. Jaemin was usually late, helping teachers move stuff or even just randomly offering to help with a club.
They always joked Jaemin was the omnipotent force behind Dream High, not the principal, who was a much more terrifying force named Suh Youngho. "I swear if your finger does not get out of my ear I will -"
"I thought my brain was getting fucked raw -"
"I am going to scream -"
"I don't know who lied to you, but that test was harder than -"
"My dick!"
"Hendery no."
Mark just watched the chaos unfold - well, in specific, he watched Donghyuck as he got into an argument with YangYang over the proper pronunciation of opossum. How had he never realised how cute Donghyuck was? Not in a weird way of course, Mark could just see why Donghyuck's locker was always filled with chocolates and flowers on White Day (Mark's was too, but that was another matter).
"Mark help me! You speak English!" Donghyuck suddenly said, and Mark's eyes were ripped from admiring Donghyuck's face to his best friend's eyes, which were impatiently glaring at him.
"Yes?"
"How do you pronounce opossum?"
"Uh-paa-sm."
"No, it's uh-po-sm!" YangYang immediately jumped in, and Donghyuck rolled his eyes.
"Mark is from Canada and speaks Canadian. C'mon."
"It's English!" Mark said, choking on his coffee. "I don't speak Canadian, I am Canadian!"
"Oh Canada," Donghyuck muttered, and Mark burst into laughter, clapping his hands rapidly. "Just remember we're in Korea, I speak Korean and am Korean so it doen't make sense!" Donghyuck pouted, and Mark just laughed at his best friend.
"Okay, I got it," Mark relented when Donghyuck wouldn't stop pouting. Mark, though he didn't admit it, wouldn't have minded Donghyuck's pouting for a little longer because that way, Mark could stare at his lips without too much suspicion.
Maybe.
Possibly.
"Jeno!" A new voice said, and Jeno looked up from the tiktok dance Shotaro was showing him to catch Jaemin in his arms, immediately snuggling into him.
"Gross," Xiaojun pretended to gag, and Hendery rolled his eyes at his boyfriend.
"You're worse Dej -"
"I will eat your chocolate cake you've been saving."
Mark just watched Donghyuck instead of saying hi to Jaemin, admiring how Donghyuck's lips pursed and curved, how Donghyuck bit his lip slightly when he wanted to talk, how his smile grew wider when he looked over at Mark and rolled his eyes. "What? You want the money now?"
"No," Mark responded, smiling at Donghyuck widely. "I'm okay with how everything is right now."
"What?" Donghyuck laughed. "You're weird Mark."
"But you love me," Mark teased, used to Donghyuck saying he loved him as a joke, and Donghyuck just beamed back.
"You're right, I do love you."
And Mark's heart did a somersault.
