Mark didn't know why tonight felt like a lightning strike was going to hit the middle of their apartment, but it definitely did.
And Donghyuck wasn't even home yet.
Maybe it was the fact they'd been tense for the past two weeks - Donghyuck had been working for longer hours and more classes, and Mark had a full time job. They didn't have a lot of time to slow down and cuddle, or even talk beyond a good night to each other when they crashed at the end of the night.
Usually, they didn't even fall asleep together, so Mark didn't know if Hyuck wished the empty spot on his bed goodnight.
It was gruelling, but Mark had nearly convinced himself it was worth it.
That is, until it was Sunday and they didn't have any plans (usually Mark had to do something to cover a clumsy coworker, but he didn't this week), but suddenly, Hyuck did and dashed out of the apartment.
So Mark had gone to church alone, checking his phone for a call or text, then got home and took out their dog in the crisp fall weather of Itaewon. His phone still hadn't gone off with a text from Hyuck, and to say Mark was worried would be an understatement.
When he got home, Latte, their dog, was tired, so she collapsed on Mark's lap dramatically. Hyuck wasn't home either, making Mark feel stress and tension building inside of him. Maybe he had some emergency at work - or maybe he was seeing someone else?
Mark bit his lip at that, dread coursing through his body. They'd been unable to spend time together lately, and he knew Hyuck liked attention. But Hyuck wouldn't cheat, right?
At some point, he closed his eyes and fell asleep - it didn't help him feel better, but what did help was when he opened his eyes to see Donghyuck opening the door, his hair a mess and his clothes slightly wrinkled. "It's windy out," Donghyuck said before seeing Mark's stormy face. "Mark!"
"Where were you?" Mark asked, his voice freezing, and saw Donghyuck deflate a little. "You disappeared for how long?" Mark looked at the clock and his frown got even deeper. Maybe he had slept for a while, because he didn't seem to remember the hours slipping by. "Six hours."
"It was important."
"You didn't text or call either. Did you even think that I was worried?" Mark could feel the tension growing. He had rarely gotten mad, thinking, for the most part, that getting angry was overall unnecessary.
Usually Hyuck was the one that got angry, and Mark would let him bicker practically to himself until he was calm enough to talk.
But not this time.
"I-I'm sorry."
"This is the first time in two weeks we had time. I'm flying out to assess a team tomorrow for three weeks, and there's no way I can come back for anything, not even an emergency. This was one day I was looking forwards to Donghyuck, one day where I could spend time with you. And you run out without a call or text like I'm absolutely nothing. I know we've been apart more than we've been together for this semester, but I didn't think this would happen." Mark's eyes got watery, seeing as his mind had concluded on the worst case scenario.
"What -"
"If you wanted to go out with someone else, all you had to do was tell me that we needed to end this." Mark had never seen Donghyuck's mood change so fast from upset to concerned and disbelief as when he felt tears begin to drink down his cheeks. Donghyuck moved immediately, grabbing Mark by his shoulders and dragging him into a hug.
"Why would I even entertain that idea when I have you?" Donghyuck soothed, Mark completely coming undone in his arms. "I am so sorry I worried you, and I'm mad at myself that my actions made you think that I could even imagine cheating on you."
Mark buried his face in Hyuck's neck, making Donghyuck sigh.
"Baby, I promise it wasn't you. I got the news on something and I was just so excited I didn't even think of texting you or telling you because I've been planning it for so long, it totally slipped my mind to tell you." Donghyuck sighed before looking at Mark with a sly smile. "I bought a house."
"You did what?" Mark spluttered, and Donghyuck smiled winningly.
"I bought. A house. So we can have our own space to live in, I've been planning for so long and I hope you don't mind I put you as my co-sign -"
"Sunshine why?" Mark asked, and Donghyuck shrugged into the hug. "Why would we need a house?"
"I figured after our wedding day you'd want a house to go home to."
"Wedding day? Hyuck we aren't engaged -"
"So let's change that. Mark, will you marry me?" Mark could tell this wasn't how the proposal was supposed to happen in Hyuck's mind, but Mark felt a smile break across his face, even as Donghyuck, realising his words, spluttered a little.
"Shit, that wasn't how it was going to happen, I screwed up."
"Of course I will." Mark laughed, and Donghyuck sighed a little. "So what was your original plan?" Mark asked, and Hyuck groaned.
"I had this whole romantic dinner date thing and the fountains were supposed to move with the music - it really took a lot of planning -" Mark didn't care that he should probably be listening to the plans of a marriage proposal and pulled Hyuck into a quick kiss, smiling. "It took a lot of planning but this way is so much better," Donghyuck murmured, smiling widely. "This way I can cuddle you and eat something that you probably didn't cook but actually tastes good.
"Hey!" Mark pinched Hyuck's arm, making the tanned man flop like a dramatic fish. "We can still do all that though."
"I know but it's not the same!"
"Just propose again then, maybe I'll cry."
"You crying is pretty funny."
"Aren't you supposed to love me?"
"I do!"
They fell into silence again, and Mark finally spoke again after a few minutes. "I'm sorry."
"Don't apologise," Donghyuck laughed, pressing a kiss to Mark's lips. "I was way too sketchy about this all. I would have thought the same thing."
"So we really just got engaged after a slight fight." Mark pouted a little when Hyuck pulled away, but perked up when Hyuck just grabbed something out of his coat pocket and opened it to reveal a diamond studded ring.
"Of course we did, it's us after all." Donghyuck responded cheekily, pressing a kiss to Mark's cheek as he slipped the ring onto his finger. "And I wouldn't have it any other way."
"And the house?"
"We just need to finish this month's stuff and then we can go." Donghyuck beamed, and Mark couldn't help but smile too.
"I love you."
"I love you too Mark."
💋
no matter what this is how i feel donghyuck would propose to mark. like he'd have a huge gesture planned and then he just... blurts it out.
