"I'm home!" I call out as I close the door behind me.

I was earlier than normal today, but that's only because I didn't meet John at the park. I go to the kitchen and see Theodosia entering in after me.

"Goddamn, Alex. Did you piss your bullies off extra today?" She asks, hopping to sit on the counter.

I chuckle gently and lean against the counter opposite of her. "Hi Theodosia, how are you? I'm great, thanks for asking." I say.

She gives me a stern look. "I don't need to ask how you're doing, I can see it on your face. I'm seriously considering asking Grace to transfer me to your school."

I shake my head. "You wouldn't like it there. It's a lot worse than your private school." I mumble.

"I highly doubt that. You've never been to my school." She replies.

She went to a good school. It was a private, christian, all-girls academy. And I got stuck at a stupid public school.

"True, but your school looks good on college applications." I point out, crossing my arms.

She groans slightly. "I know.. Anything to get out of this damn place."

"I don't get it...Grace loves you, gives you everything. Spoils you rotten, you could say. And you still hate her and this house. Why?"

She shakes her head. "She's too controlling. She's trying to make me live the life she never had." She sighs. "Besides, she's not my mom. She keeps pretending to be, but she's just.."

"I get it. No one can replace your mom." I say, smiling gently at her.

This is what I like about Theodosia. Although she's usually stubborn and scolds me often, she just gets me. She understands what I've been through and we have each other to get through all the bad crap.

"Well, I better go get started on homework. It's been an odd day." I say and she waves as I walk upstairs.

I sigh and plop down on my bed face first. I wasn't sure what to think about what happened earlier. Was he going to kiss me? Because that would just be..Well, not possible. There was probably a bruise that almost didn't look as dark as the others.

"Hey, where were you yesterday? You missed it, Thomas Jefferson got a week of OSS." Lafayette says as he catches up to me.

Hercules runs up to the other side and they see my face and I hear Hercules sigh. "I'm going to assume you know the reason he got suspended based on the bruises on your face." He mutters.

I shrug. "It's fine, I'm fine." I tell them. "I probably deserved it anyway, I was bad mouthing his friend."

"What the hell, Alex? Why would you do that?" Laf asks. "Is it just your goal to get beat up everyday?"

"And then you ditched school after that? You never leave, why did you go?" Hercules questions.

"John brought me to his house and cleaned my face up." I say under my breath, staring at the ground.

The two stop in their tracks and then grab my arm to make me stop as well. Herc made me face him. "Laurens?" He questioned.

I give a small nod and Laf moves next to Herc to look at me in shock. "He..Helped you?"

I nod once again. "Yeah..."

I then feel someone shove into me and I frown and turn to see John walking past me. "Get out of the middle of the hallway, short stack." He mumbles and I frown a bit more.

"Yeah, looks like he really wanted to help you there." Lafayette scoffs.

"Shut up, I'm not lying about it. It was weird, and he probably just feels uncomfortable now." I say as I start walking towards the cafeteria. They chase after me.

"Wait, why would he feel uncomfortable? What happened, what aren't you telling us?" Laf asks.

I sit down at our usual table and glace over at John Laurens, who was with a group of football players. He locks eyes with me and stares a little before sighing and looking back to his group.

"Woah, what the hell was that." Hercules interrogates. "You saw that too, right Laf?"

I turn back and Laf nods. "Oh, I definitely saw that. Tell us everything."

I sigh and lean in so I didn't have to talk as loud, worried someone may overhear.

"Well, I went to his house and we went up to his room and such. I commented on his art skills and he got really flustered about it, insisting he'd rather go to law school than art school." I explain the first part.

"Well, yeah. A lawyer is a better career than an artist, everyone knows that." Hercules shrugs.

"Right, but you don't understand. His paintings were...They were amazing." I say. "I hate him, but this guy could make some serious money on his art."

Laf nods slowly. "Whatever you say, mon ami. Continue."

"Well, then he started cleaning up my face and something...weird happened. He stared at me a bit and we got super close to each other, but he pulled away suddenly."

"Like he was going to kiss you?"

I nod. "Yeah, crazy, right? He made me promise not to tell anyone, though, so I'm trusting you guys with this."

"Oh, of course." Laf says.

"I mean, who would believe us over him anyway?" Herc shrugs again. "That's crazy though.."

"It makes my theory have some more support, though. The one where John is crushing on Alex?" Laf suggests.

"He's not crushing on me. He's straight." I say plainly.

They both raise an eyebrow at me. "You don't seriously believe that, do you?" Hercules asks. I nod and he shakes his head. "Dude, I think your gaydar is broken. Laurens is the furthest thing from straight."

"Herc is right. Have you not seen him? Poor thing is further back in the closet than any of us ever have been." Laf says, looking over at him.

I chuckle gently and shake my head. "Whatever you guys say. Nothing even happened, and it didn't mean anything. You just wanted to know."

"Mmkay, Alex. If you say so. But if you two start hanging out behind our backs, I'ma be upset." Herc chuckles and bites into his sandwich he had pulled out of his bag.

"Trust me, that won't happen."
