I do not like John Laurens.
I do not like John Laurens.
I do not like John Laurens.
I like John Laur- Shit.
I hate this. I hate the fact that I can't stop thinking about him.
And thinking about the fact that he won't talk to me.
He used to be the one trying so desperately to make conversation with me, and now it's the other way around. Hell, he's sent Peggy instead to get his homework a couple times.
Hercules and Lafayette haven't been talking to me much, either. They're upset with me for not telling them what's going on. I want to tell them, but I feel like they'd get more mad if I told them.
I knew I had to tell them, though. I couldn't lose John and those two at the same time. I text them to meet me at our lunch table for lunch today, and they take a while before responding with an "okay" and "sure."
I sit at the table, fidgeting with the sleeves of my hoodie as I waited for my friends to arrive. I had to get them to not hate me before we went on Fall Break because if I didn't, I'd have no one to hang out with on Halloween. I did not want to spend Halloween passing out nasty old candy with Grace.
They finally sit down across from me and stare at me. "Okay..So what's going on?" Laf asks bluntly.
I sigh. "Okay..Promise you guys won't hate me?" I ask before saying anything. They hesitantly nod.
"You know we couldn't hate you, we just want to know what you're keeping from us." Herc explains.
I nod and take a deep breath, leaning in so nobody else could hear. "Okay, so..You remember how I told you John and I almost kissed?" They nod once again. "Well, the next day, he invited me over once again. And we..Well, we kissed and a bit more, I guess."
Their eyes widen. "Alexander!" Laf exclaims, wiggling his eyebrows at me.
I blush a bit. "Shut up!" I mumble.
They chuckle and lean in. "So anyway, what happened after that?"
I sigh softly. "Nothing. And that's what has been bothering me. He didn't show up at school for a week, and then he asked me to meet up so we could talk, and he ended up just showing me his admission letters."
They frown with me. "He didn't talk to you about what happened? Like, at all?" Herc asks.
I shake my head and Laf frowns a bit more. "That's terrible.." He mumbles. "Has he talked to you about it at all since then?"
I shake my head again. "No, he's barely been talking to me since then. And last week after debate practice, he told me he didn't want to be talking to me at school."
"Maybe there's something more going on?" Laf suggests. "I mean, we already established he's in the closet..Maybe there's a reason he hasn't come out yet."
I shrug. "But I don't know what that means. I don't know whether he likes me or not, I just want to know."
"You really like him, don't you?" Herc asks.
I blush. I had never said it out loud, and I wasn't sure I wanted to. Saying it out loud just made it..real. And I couldn't pretend it wasn't there. But alas, I couldn't lie to myself or them any longer.
"I...I think I do." I smile gently. "I think I really like John Laurens."
They both smile at me. "Well, then we're just going to have to set you guys up together." Laf says.
My smile drops and I shake my head quickly. "No, no, no, that won't be necessary. I really think you should stay out of it for now. I doubt he even likes me back, considering he won't even talk to me."
"I think if he didn't like you, he wouldn't be so worried about talking to you." Herc says. "Just like Laf's chicken films." He teases and Laf punches him in the arm.
"Shut up, Herc!" He pouts. "It's not my fault the English language is stupid."
"It really is, though. I prefer Spanish and French over it any day."
"What about Irish?" Herc complains.
"Herc, just surrender. French is clearly the superior language. Don't be upset just because you can't fluently speak it." Laf smirks gently and now Herc is the one pouting.
"Anyway.." I proclaim, interrupting them teasing each other.
I see a light bulb go off in Hercules's head and he smiles brightly. "Hey, we're going to that Halloween party next Friday, right?" He asks.
"Oh, I don't know, I thought we were going to hang out-"
"We can! At the party!" Laf says, seeming to catch onto Herc's idea.
I raise an eyebrow and then sigh. "Alright, Halloween party it is, then."
"Ooh, we should plan our costumes!" Lafayette says, smiling brightly.
"Or we could just wear football jerseys like literally every other guy at this school." Hercules says.
"I agree with Herc. We already don't fit in, we don't need to show up in some weird costume." I mumble.
"Fine, be boring then. But I can assure you, I will not be wearing a stupid jersey." He says. "I was thinking of going as a vampire or something." He smiles.
"You do you, Laf." Hercules chuckles. I smile at them, glad they were back.
As they talk, one thing becomes ultimately clear.
I definitely have a crush on John Laurens.
