But I Spent 22 Days

I hadn't seen John all day at school, but I figured he was probably just hanging out with his group. Or ditching. There's no way of knowing.

After debate practice, I go to the park we usually meet up at, smiling a bit. I walk there and see he isn't there and I frown.

I then take out my phone and call him, but get sent to voicemail after a few rings.

"Hey, John, it's Alex." I mentally curse. Of course he knew it was me, caller ID dumbass. "Just wondering why you weren't at the park. Um..Call me back."

I quickly hang up the phone and groan. "What the hell.." I mumble.

I sit on the park bench, figuring he probably was running late or something.

But after two hours, I knew he wasn't coming.

I sigh and look at the few texts I sent him before walking home, mildly disappointed.

Theo greets me as usual, and so does Grace this time. "Hey, brat, you have mail on the counter." She says.

I nod and walk over there to see a letter from Princeton. I gasp and pick it up, Theo looking over. "Is that..?" She asks.

I nod and she runs over, leaning over the counter excitedly. "Well, go on, open it!" She says.

I take a deep breath and then slowly open it, reading the letter. I frown as I read through it and give Theo a sad look, and she copies it.

"Oh, Alex I'm so sorry... You could do better, anyway.." She says, rubbing my shoulder.

"Yeah, I guess..But how can you do better than the best?" I smile suddenly. "I got in!"

Her jaw drops as she smiles widely and hugs me. "Oh, I knew it!" She pulls away and playfully punches me in the shoulder. "You jerk, making me think you didn't get in."

I chuckle and look at the letter a little longer before Ms. Sunshine burst into our conversation.

"Sure you got in, but you're never going to be able to afford a place like that. Looks like you're going to be stuck at a crappy community college instead." Grace says, digging her hands into her bag of nasty ass healthy chips.

I raise an eyebrow at her. "Oh, trust me, I'll be just fine in New Jersey, Grace."

She rolls her eyes and goes up to her room and Theodsia hugs me again. "Call your friends, let's go to dinner to celebrate!" She says.

I nod and text our little group chat for them to meet at our favorite diner a few blocks from our school. I then send a text to John as well, figuring he got his letter today, too. I wanted to know his luck on it.

We go to dinner and Hercules and Gilbert sit across from me and Theodosia. "So, what's the big news you needed to share?" Herc asks.

I hand them the letter from Princeton and they skim through it before smiling brightly. "Dude, I knew you'd get in!" Herc exclaims.

"Congratulations, Alexander!" Lafayette smiles.

"Did John get in, too?" Herc asks.

"He probably did, he's rich as hell." Laf scoffs.

"Who's John?" Theo asks.

We look over at her and I see Herc and Laf raise an eyebrow. "One of Alex's bullies." Laf says.

"Who he happens to be doing homework for." Herc finishes.

Theo seems concerned as she looks over at me. "You do your bully's homework? Why?"

I shrug. "He pays me to do it. I need money to go to college." I explain.

"And you didn't think to tell me?" She asks.

"I didn't feel the need to.. We were keeping it on the down low." I say.

"And he still bullies you?" She questions.

"Well, they almost kissed the other day." Laf teases. I blush a bit, forgetting I didn't tell them we actually did kiss...and more.

Theo stares at me in shock. "Alex! I was not expecting that from you!" She exclaims.

I roll my eyes. "Yeah yeah, nothing happened. It didn't mean anything." I lie.

She gives me a stern look, showing she didn't believe me, but quickly shrugged it off. "Whatever, you're going to Princeton! I'm so excited for you!"

"We all are, Alex." Laf says, chuckling.

"Yeah, you're going to be a pretty great lawyer." Herc adds.

I blush gently. "Oh, shut it you three. Just eat your food."

We laugh and eat and talk and such. Once we finish, I step outside and dial John's contact again, seeing as it's been a few hours and he probably wasn't busy anymore. My phone rang a few times before getting sent to voicemail again. I sigh and try calling one more time, only to get sent to voicemail quicker.

I frown and go to text him, but the other three join me, so I put my phone away. We walk to drop the other two off before Theo and I go home.

We enter and I see that Grace is already in her room and sleeping, playing her loud ass music.

We sit on the couch and Theo looks over at me. "So, John..." She says, waiting for me to finish.

"Laurens." I sigh.

She nods. "John Laurens. Bullies you, pays you to do his homework, and almost kissed you?"

I shrug. "I guess so." I say.

"So what I'm hearing is...He's your sugar daddy?"

Heat rushes to my cheeks instantly and I could tell I was beat red. "Theo!" I gasp.

She giggles. "What? It's true! He pays you - a lot of money - and you do his homework! It's like a sugar daddy, minus the whole sex thing."

I blush a bit more, which I didn't know was possible, and look away.

She gasps. "Plus the whole sex thing?!" She asks.

I shake my head but she smiles widely. "Alex, I have known you long enough to know when you are lying. And you, my friend, are lying like Pinocchio right now."

I avoid looking at her as she leans in, trying to get my attention. "How many times?" She asks.

"Just once. And, I can guarantee it won't happen again." I mumble and she squeals.

"Uh-huh, suuuuure." She says, dragging the last word out as long as possible. "So. Is that where you were yesterday? Because I knew you weren't at Laf's house."

I could see her smirking at me as I look away from her. "Don't say anything to them...Please." I say under my breath.

"Okay, okay, I won't." She giggles and then whispers, "Alex has a sugar daddy."
