Gotham City, City streets Thurs Nov 19 3:34 p.m.
Caroline
I walked quickly home from school that day. Something didn't feel right- my stomach felt queasy.
My black heels clicked down the street, red purse in hand, my eyes traveled left and right.
I'm a junior in high school and I'm scared to cross the street. I've really hit rock bottom.
I turned the corner and down the street containing my apartment building.
I stopped. Looked behind, is someone following me?
I walked faster, was it in my head or was I hearing footsteps?
Someone suddenly grabbed me from behind. I nearly choked, their arms wrapped around my waist so tight. I almost screamed until they covered my mouth with their right hand. I struggled for a moment, then looked down at what was grabbing me.
Golden brown hands and leather jacketed arms, smell of his cologne.
He released me and I faced him. "ZAYN!" I hugged him, I thought I'd never see him again.
"They let me go." He smiled into my shoulder.
"Zayn I'm sorry. I should've came back for you. I thought about you every day--"
"It's okay. It's so okay you were safe. There's so much I have to tell you. I saw her. I saw Nicole." He said.
"She's alive?!" I said in disbelief. "Are you sure?"
"Positive. They're keeping her for the same reason they kept me."
"Why is that?" I asked, though I think I already knew. Cat said it's because they want me.
"I need to stay with you. Always. I can sleep on your couch I won't bother you at all please. I need to protect you from--"
I watched his eyes. Beautiful sparkling brown, I love him. I love Zayn, I always have.
His eyes were blank and staring now, wide.
"Zayn?"
He stood staring at me, mouth open. He stifled a sharp breath, then placed his hand on his flat, white tank-topped stomach.
When he pulled his arm away, the white was stained a dark red in a circle in the middle of his torso.
His face remained blank, and I was too confused to stop him from falling completely over on the sidewalk.
I knelt beside his laying body.
"NOO!" I cried, placing my own hand on the wound. Ten feet ahead I saw a black hooded figure disappear into an alley.
"Zayn stay with me!" Tears flowed all the way down my cheeks onto my neck.
"HELP!! PLEASE!!" I called. The usually crowded city streets left us empty in this moment.
"CAT!!" I tried, she was always around on the streets. "CAT PLEASE ITS ZAYN!!"
My fingers traced his cheekbones, for a moment I could've sworn I saw his lips part.
I ran my fingers through his shining black hair.
"Zayn talk to me. I- I love you please!"
His eyes fluttered softly. "They. Want. You."
"Zayn! I need you don't leave me please." I sobbed. "Who will protect me?"
He took his last deep breath, "Bat. Man." His eyes closed slowly.
"NOOO!" I shrieked. I put my ear to his chest, he wasn't breathing.
My heart was beating so fast, I felt dizzy.
Nothing in my life ever hurt this much.
