It was the day of the funeral. Darry had helped me plan everything before. We were having it outside. I put on a black dress with a black sweater. I didn't bother with makeup or anything, but I put my hair in a ponytail. "Leaving in five." Darry yelled to me. I walked out of Pony's room and into the living room.
"Who's taking who?" I asked. Soda, Two-Bit, and Dally were all at the DX, and they were going to ride together from there. "I'll take you and Pony. Then we can go pick up Johnny." Darry said. "Ok." Pony was wearing a nice button up shirt and pants. Darry was wearing something similar. "Ready?" I asked. "Yeah, let's go." Darry answered.
We got into the truck and drove off. "What is school going to be like?" I asked. "Well, it's almost Thanksgiving, after that you have about two weeks and school is out again." I nodded, "Do you think they will give me a couple of days for Steve's death?" Darry sighed, "Yeah, maybe." We got to the funeral where Dallas, Two-Bit, and Sodapop were. "Nice suit, Dal." I said. "Yeah, you know it's just something I picked up." I stared at him, "Did you steal it?" Dallas looked regretful, "Possibly."
We walked to the exact spot where the service would be held. "You got this." Pony said. "Yeah, it's going to be good." We stood there listening to the service. It was finally my turn, and I was scared. "Hey everybody, as you all know I was Steve's sister. I only knew him for a short amount of time, but I loved him. It was nice to have someone in my family that was that nice. I know we were left on bad terms, but I know he loved me." I sniffled. "Anyway, Steve was one of the best brothers anyone could ask for. Thank you all for coming."
I walked away and stood next to Pony. "That was great." Pony said hugging me. "Thanks." We stood there for another couple of minutes. It was finally time to go. I got into Darry's truck with Pony, Johnny, and Darry. "Good job with your speech, Elizabeth." Darry said. "Thanks." I was tired, really tired. Darry took a random turn, "Where are we going?" I asked. "Going to eat." He answered. I nodded my head as we drove. Every bump on the road made me want to fall asleep faster.
We stopped the car and Pony and I got out. "Come on, Darry." I said. "No, it's just you and Pony." I looked at Pony who was smiling. I nodded my head and we walked into the restaurant. We sat down and the waitress came over, "Hi, what can I get you two?" She asked. "I'll have a cheeseburger and some fries please." She wrote it down, "And you?" Pony looked down at the menu then back up at the woman, "I'll have a chocolate milkshake, a cheeseburger, and some fries. Oh! Make it two milkshakes." Pony said. I looked at him shaking my head sarcastically. The lady walked away with our orders. Pony then asked, "What?" I scoffed, "You practically ordered the whole menu!" Pony gasped. "Yeah, yeah."
The lady came back in about ten minutes with our food. "Thank you." I said. We started eating, and I hadn't realized how hungry I was. "Wow! A little hungry there?" I rolled my eyes, "I haven't eaten in a while." Pony looked at me confused, "When was the last time you ate?" I thought back, "Um, yesterday morning." Pony stared at me. "I know, I know. It's just that I felt like I couldn't really eat. I was so sick to my stomach." Pony took a sip of his milkshake, and then he slid the other one over to me. "Thank you." I said. "No problem."
We sat there drinking our milkshakes and eating our food, and we talked for hours. It was time for us to go back to the house, so we sat up and walked off after Ponyboy paid for the food. The walk was quiet until we got to the house. I walked inside and gasped. "What's this?" I asked. "Well, I wanted to do something special." Pony said. There were lights up all over the ceiling. "It's beautiful." I said. "There's more." Pony pointed me over to the kitchen. I sat down at the table waiting for the surprise. "Steve's parents gave us some pictures of him when he was a kid." I started to cry. "So, we made this scrapbook of him." Tears were now rolling down my face. "This is amazing." I said laughing a little bit. "The whole gang is waiting outside." Pony said. "Ok."
I grabbed Ponyboy's hand and walked out the back door. I smiled at the sight of everyone in their little suits. "You guys are so cute." I said. "Whatever, man. Don't make me wear this again." Dallas said. "Whatever." We all sat in the back for a little while. We talked for a long time, and then we played football. "I'm gonna win." Two-Bit said. "Yeah? Wanna bet?" Soda said back to him. "Why not, twenty-five cents?" Two-Bit cocked his eyebrow. "Yeah." Soda was on my team, as well as Dally. Dally was not good at playing football. He threw the ball straight, but it ended up going sideways, somehow. "What? How?" I asked. Dallas just shrugged.
We kept playing for about an hour. "Well, well, well. I won." Two-Bit said. "Yeah, whatever." Soda said. Soda reached down his pocket and grabbed out twenty-five cents. He angrily handed it to Two-Bit. They separated and we walked inside. The sky was slowly darkening. Pony and I decided to make a chocolate cake, we read the recipe, and then we got all the ingredients together. I grabbed the flour and the eggs, while Ponyboy got all of the other things.
I needed about two cups of flour so I got out the measuring cups. I started to fill the cup up when Pony shoved his hand in the bag. He got the flour all over his finger, "What are you doing, weirdo?" Ponyboy smirked. "Come here." I laughed and walked over to him. He pulled me closer and kissed me. He got flour all in my hair. "Boop." He took his finger and touched my nose with it. "Great, now I have flower in my hair and on my face! Ponyboy Michael Curtis!" I said. "Yes?" He smiled. He acted as if he hadn't done anything. "You're my favorite weirdo." I said. "You know you love me!" He said. We got back to making the cake.
Finally, it was done. We iced it and everything, so I called the gang into the kitchen to eat. "Eat up, boys." I said. They all sat at the table with the cake in front of them. They started to eat, but they had a weird look on their faces. "What's wrong?" I asked. "Why is it so bitter?" Two-Bit asked. Darry elbowed him in the arm. "Uh, Pony? Did we forget the sugar?" I asked. Pony just stared into my eyes and blinked, "Um. I think we might have." I started laughing, which made the rest of the gang laugh as well. Even though today was my brothers funeral, it was a good day. Ponyboy did something special for me, we made an awful cake, and I still love the whole gang.
