We start the morning with an outing at Yu Garden. It is over four hundred years old, and contains buildings, too. As I snap photos on my phone, I notice how many pictures include Sangil. Not just from today, but over the past three months. I've taken them at the races, in the car, hotels, during our activities - almost everywhere that we've been together. I have always taken plenty of pictures and videos, so it's not a surprise that he shows up in so many.
At Qibao, which include traditional gardens, pavilions, stone lanes, we explore before we dine. I feel like holding hands has become our default setting, as we stroll through the town over bridges that cross gurgling brooks and on stony streets hand-in-hand. After lunch, we also have a traditional Chinese tea.
In the afternoon we go to the circus. I am excited to see the acrobats and contortionists. "You should incorporate some of these moves into your next choreo," I whisper to Sangil as we watch them perform.
"You want me to break a bone or two?" he whispers back.
After the show is over (it was magnificent), I ask Sangil if any Kpop group had a circus theme before. He thinks hard and replies, "I only remember Speed and their song Don't Tease Me. It wasn't one hundred percent circus themed, but I know it was circus related. It had awesome choreo that included acrobatics."
The last place we go to is Shanghai Old Street, which looks exactly like it did one hundred years ago, and is a movie set. We don't see a film being shot today, but it's still thrilling to walk around. Actually, I end up attracting attention when an F1 fan notices me. I was wondering if/when this was going to happen. When either Sangil or I (or both of us) get recognized and have fans follow us around. I'm not as popular a driver as some others, but F1 has millions of fans, so even if only a small percentage recognize me, that's still scads of people. Sangil has been filmed at the airports and outside the paddock. It's not difficult to find out approximately when he'll be flying in or arriving at the circuit. So far all the fans have been courteous, and I hope it stays that way.
"I have a surprise for Taewoong in Azerbaijan," I tell Sangil at the airport.
"For Taewoong? And not me?"
I laugh as I reply, "You told me you only like surprises if they're to your liking. And a surprise like Taewoong's wouldn't be to your liking. At least I hope not!" I add. And on that note I say goodbye and walk away to my waiting area.
