My phone rings while I'm on the treadmill on Thursday. It's Sangil. "Moshi moshi."
"Hi, Sochi," I hear in my earbuds.
"Hello. Good day?"
"Yes, we're at the airport waiting to leave for Mexico. And ... well, the guys were asking if they could try on my wedding ring, and I said yes, maybe I shouldn't have, but I did, and anyway ..."
"Yes?"
"You had my ring engraved."
"I had both engraved."
"Does yours also have Sochi ❤️ Sangil?"
"Yes."
"So these are rings that you bought, not We Got Married?"
"Correct."
"I just, I, um."
"Are you thinking something along the lines of this being more permanent than the show calls for?"
"Yeah," he softly whispers after a pause.
"You mean more to me than a temporary job."
"I'm glad, I like you, too. But still. These are wedding bands."
"What distinguishes a wedding band from any other ring? Just look at it like a platinum piece of jewelry."
"Platinum?!"
"Oops. I misspoke and you misheard."
"Uh-huh. By the way, why are you breathing hard?"
"I'm running." I pause. "I hope you didn't think anything dirty."
"No!" he denies.
"Want to turn on video calling?" He doesn't protest, so I do. Then he makes a strangled sound and widens his eyes. I wonder why until I realize that I'm running in a sports bra and shorts.
"Where are you?"
"The gym."
"You do this often?"
"What, exercise?" I pretend to misunderstand.
"In those clothes."
I smile. "Sometimes I put a tee shirt overtop. It depends on how hot and sweaty I am."
"I see." All of a sudden the screen goes murky. I think he's holding it to his chest. "No, you can't see. And give me my ring back."
"Here," says a muffed voice. "And tell Sochi I said hi."
"We all do," chimes in another member.
"I can't wait for Spain," adds Sebin. "I want to meet a cute girl, too."
"Sorry about that," says Sangil. "I think it's time to say goodbye. We'll talk again later. "
"Sure. Enjoy Mexico."
"Bye."
After hanging up I take a selfie and send it to him. Think of me when you're away.
