TW: Crying

Esme's POV

I wake up in a cold sweat, I see my sister standing by side watching my every movement. She sighs and places my finest clothes on the end of my bed as she goes to prepare my brother. I get dressed and placed our breakfast on the table. They start to eat as I poured my porridge into each of their bowls.

In the last games, my mother was picked for the games and unfortunately didn't make it. So now it's just me, my younger sister (Abigail) and my brother (Daniel). My sister is only a year younger than me but she can't compete because of her amputated leg. We saved up to be able to get her a prosthetic but she still can't compete. I'm so grateful for that, so she can look after our brother who just turned 5.

The clock chimes 9:30 so I decided to set off to the reaping. It's my third year competing for the games. I go inside and see my sister and brother looking at me with tears in their eyes. I kneel down to their height and hug them tightly. They can't bear to loose me, I can't either. I hold back the tears and look at them together.

"It's time, I have tried to not get my name placed in so many times but we needed the food-" - Esme

"How many times?" - Abigail

"205." - Esme

"I'm so sorry. We needed it. It was a harsh winter. Abigail you know the drill, you know what to do incase I do get picked. You go to stay with Uncle Adam, you know where he lives, you have you Emergancy bags prepared." - Esme

By now tears are staining my face. I take a deep breath and hug them tight as they hug back.

"I love you guys so much, you know that. And if I do get picked, I will win for you. I will do anything i can to see you guys again." - Esme

Time Skip - Reaping

Me and the rest of the 13 to 18 year olds were all standing in straight lines in two groups of boys and girls. Abigail, Daniel and uncle Adam were all standing behind the guards along with the other families. My heart starts to race now, I'm not sure why.

The district 12's representative (named Farren) did our usual introduction and that dragged on! So I decided to look around for my recent acquaintance, Haymitch Abernathy. He was the one who helped my sister build her prosthetic leg. I find him across the yard and seeing him giving me a sympathetic and reassuring look.

"So as usual, Ladies first." - Farren

She places her hand in the glass bowl and picks the top card and reads it allowed.

"Esme Grace Sullivan." - Farren

My whole world goes blurry and silent, with the exception of my brother and sister screaming and crying. The guards pushed past the other girls and dragged me to the stage. My eyes blurred up from
the tears. I look up to my siblings and see the pain in there eyes, I start to silently break down. Uncle Adam take them both and take them away from the scene.

"Now for the boys." - Farren

She picks the piece of paper out and reads it to herself. My gaze remained on Haymitch giving him a silent look of dispair. He stares at me too, sympathetically.

"Haymitch Abernathy." - Farren

He goes wide eyed and walks up to the stage and comforts me as I start to break down in his shirt. A few tears from his ice orbs escape into my dress.
