The feeling of being one with another being was unimaginable. It felt as if Hiccup had been alone at his core for his whole life until this moment.

"Toothless?"

"Is that what you call me?"

"YOU, you talk!"

"Of course I talk, what did you think?"

"Well, nevermind, how is this possible, ho-how are you in my head? "

Hiccup surprised himself with being so calm. It felt as if he should be running around screaming, but Hiccup just stood.

Toothless was about to answer when the sounds of roaring and Vikings shouting reached their ears.

"Raid", Hiccup said aloud.

"I need to hide, we'll talk about his later"

"Hey wait! You gotta answer my questions first. Where are you running of too!-and why do you need to hide!?"

No answer came, but Hiccup could still feel the incredibly confusing but incredible sensation of Toothless at the back of his head, and if he focused he could discern Toothless's vivid emotions. Hiccup was shocked, he felt extreme fear and the need for self-preservation wash over him. Hiccup felt like he needed to run and hide, somewhere far away from the dragon raid. As Hiccup retreated back into his own mind, he felt more calm but still a bit shaken up.

"I'll come back tommorow, and you better answer my questions!"

Hiccup turned tail and ran back towards the village, coming out of the trees to find himself in the middle of a raid. Hiccup knew that without Toothless so watch over him, he would probably die so Hiccup headed towards the forge to help out Gobber. Just as he was about to enter the forge Hiccup realized he left the tail at the cove. Uggg.

As Hiccup woke up the next day, he found himself wondering if anything that happened the previous night was real. Hiccup prodded around his own head until he found the sentient aura of Toothless. It actually happened. How was he so calm!?! Hiccup sat there in his bed until he realized why he was so tranquil. It felt as if he knew somewhere deep inside of him that was going to happen, and that part of him was awakened when the connection was made, as if the gods forged it into his soul. This felt like his destiny, destiny.

Hiccup tried to contact Toothless, but even though Hiccup could feel the dragon, it seemed the distance between them hindered them communicating. He was talking with a dragon! Hiccup jumped out of his bed in the forge and saying "HI" to Gobber on the way out headed towards the cove (after pilfering a basket of fish). As he neared the cove he felt Toothless again.

"Hey Toothless!"

"Why do you call me Toothless? I have plenty of teeth, enough to chew you atleast."

Hiccup gulped, but he also noticed that Toothless seemed extremely tired.

"You sound very tired Toothless."

"I had to conceal my presence from the dragons by using the last of my magic."

Once again Hiccup felt as if he should be shocked, but it seemed again as if in the very core of his soul, he knew that magics like that existed for dragons. A hidden part of his soul Hiccup hadn't known existed until now. As human and dragon sat together Hiccup picked up a stick and started to draw. He slowly drew the shape of Toothless's head, and moved onto the ears. He came back down to make the eyes, adding small details all around. As he drew, Toothless came up behind him. He tilted his head as if looking at the drawing in a different angle.

Shade saw himself being draw out in the sand. Dragons sometimes, but extremely rarely formed a mind connection with another, so rarely that there were only a few sparse examples in centuries. It was called tvöfaldur sál einn líkami (An old phrase hard to transalate, something along the lines of two souls one body). He didn't know how he had formed such a precious connection with a two-legs, but he thought he knew what the human was doing. In the history brennandi bækur (Burning books), the ritual that only the móðir dreki (mother dragon) could make had to be completed by a show of trust. A show of trust that your partner won't use the power you've given them to harm you. Shade knew he had to act fast or the two-legs could be offended. Shade grabbed a branch and began to write the runes and letters he knew that were to be used in such a legendary bond. The two-legs looked up at him, smiling. Shade was relived, the two-legs accepted the first part of the ritual. He had made the challenge. The two-legs stood up and looked around at all the runes. He smiled, but suddenly looked confused. Shade knew what he was confused about: once you start the ritual the mental connection is removed until it ends succesfully. The two legs started walking and he stepped right on a rune! Shade growled, what was the two legs doing?  The two-legs did it again! And again! Was it mocking him? Suddenly the two-legs started to properly do the ritual, carefully making his way through the maze of words until he reached him. As soon as the two-legs fully transpered the ritual their bond returned in all its splendor.

Hiccup looked at him, and then said:

"Toothless what is your name?"

Shade still didn't know why he kept getting called 'Toothless', but he let it go for now.

"Dragons have a one-word names like you vikingr, but they are not a dragon's true name. My 'name' is Shade, but my true name, which I discovered fifteen years ago is this:"

Shade proceded to send Hiccup a flurry of memories, feelings, and expirenences. It was very rare to give someone your true name, but as a pair that had found tvöfaldur sál einn líkami and had done the ritual of treysta (trust) it was only proper. Hiccup was speechless for a second as he heard every single part of Shade described. Shade could feel Hiccup's embarrasment as Hiccup replied:

"Well, my name's Hiccup."

Shade felt even more confused. First Toothless and now Hiccup? Hiccups were annoying for dragons and often they wouldn't be able to fly properly with hiccups. Vikingr were odd, naming an offspring Hiccup. Maybe all vikingr were named odd and Toothless meant something special? Shade would figure that out later, but he had to find the answer to something else first.

"Well, what are we Hiccup? Friends, acquaintances?"

"If it's fine with you, the only word that I feel is brother. Is that right?"

"Yes...brother."

A/N: I know its horrible writing rip. I'll explain the lack of Hiccup's shock more later, and I din't realize how hard it was to portray Hiccup's and Shade's reactions realistically. I tried my best but its horrid. And yes they will leave soon, in the next week (real life time) you'll read allllll about it.

IMPORTANT___________________________________________________________IMPORTANT

Do I have your attention? Good. Sorry to anyone who wanted Hiccstrid please don't leave cuz of this, but I've chosen Hiccup x OC. WAIT LEMME EXPLAIN. In fanfics I've always found it really dumb when Hiccup comes back after 5 years and Hicctsrid happens in like 1 month. like what?? The event that makes Hiccup leaves will involve Astrid heavily. PLS don't stop reading the fanfic cuz of this, I'll make that romance epic (hopefully). But yea, cya :D.
