Hiccup was at the docks. Stoick and a few other villagers were leaving on another expedition to find the nest. Hiccup was standing on the side, hidden from the sight of his former father, and was quite confused by the people leaving. Usually the best warriors and best sailsmen accompanied Stoick, but today it was an odd mix of oridinary people and Spitelout. His confusion was addressed by the next statement by Stoick:
"Today as I leave for the nest, instead of Gobber, the acting chief will be...Snotlout!"
No wonder. Stoick was seeing how Snotlout would be able to do alone for a few days, and the unique sort of people going on the trip was to make sure there was no bias in the report once Stoick came back. No wonder Spitelout and Bonelout are going. Another thing that was confusing was solved as the timing of the nest expeditions was timed right after a raid so they wouldn't be raided with their cheif and warriors absent, but Stoick had enough faith in Snotlout, very bad idea, to schedule the expedition to be gone in around the time for the next raid.
For the past month Hiccup had attended dragon training and continued to hardly learn anything. In terms of physical fighting Fishlegs also failed to progress and in terms of mental knowledge about dragons, well, he already knew it all. Except stuff you can only learn from having a dragon share your mind. The twins seemed to improve somewhat (atleast in terms of physical combat), but were still as destructive as ever. Snotlout's ego continued to grow with the new 'position' of heir which he reckoned he always had anyways. His flirting attempts with Astrid doubled (and so did his amount of bruises). In terms of the cheif training, well, he hardly listened at all talking about how his muscles would do all the work anyway. Astrid didn't seem to improve either, but that was because to Hiccup she seemed perfect from the first class.
Gobber mostly focused on teaching Astrid everything he knew and ignored the rest. Fishlegs was being considered on being put onto the council as a minor member so Gobber told him he no longer needed to turn up to dragon training which Fishlegs was very happy about. As for him, well, he still attended because he had nothing more to do during the day except help out Gobber in the forge, but as Gobber taught the class he couldn't do that, (and it was fun to watch Snotlout running around in terror whenever a dragon came close to eating him). Gobber was the only person who pretty much stopped his mask from breaking by talking and treating Hiccup like an equal .
To say the next few days under Snotlout's rule was horrid would be an understatement. The two days leading up to the raid caused almost as much damage as one: Burning houses, unrepaired houses, unsatisfied villagers with quarrels that needed to be solved, food management, etc. And when the raid came it was an absolute disaster, but it could've been worse; Snotlout was asleep through the whole thing, drunk on Stoick's mead so with Astrid in control we lost ten houses, more than double my record of four, but with Snotlout in charge it probably would've been the whole village. We also lost nearly 1/4 of the food we had, and again, it probably would've been all of it with Snotlout not passed out on the floor as Astrid found him later.
-_:Break Line:_-
When Stoick came back with another four half-destroyed long boats and another unsuccesful expedition he was furious. Combined with both the frustration of another failed nest excursion and a half-broken village Snotlout was removed as heir immediatly, but of course not publically dishonered like me. Spitelout was furious, but even he had to admit the accounts of the staying villagers was bad. Now the problem was finding an heir. Astrid would have been the obvious option, she had taken control during a raid with no training and saved nearly all of it, and was top in dragon training, but both the facts that she was not a Haddock and not even a hooligan but an outsider and that she was a girl made her an unnacceptable choice...until his former father came up with a 'brilliant' solution that would probably get Hiccup killed.
It was a lot worse than that, here's everything that happened:
Hiccup was going to marry Astrid. And then pretty much hand the reins of the village to her. When the Thing happened, Hiccup would act as the primary heir to stop all the tribes (except the Bog-Burglars) from being offended by a girl heir who was not a Bog-Burglar. The solution was actually quite smart except...this was Astrid, and everything fell apart as Hiccup walked part her house on the way to visit Toothless, and from the inside of Astrid's house came words that finally broke Hiccup.
"MOM, its Hiccup, a Hiccup, a runt and an outcast who can't even step out of the house without burning half the village down. The dishonered DISOWNED child of Stoick, and the same Hiccup who can't even pick up a weapon! The only teen who wasn't even allowed inside of dragon training and you expect ME to marry HIM?"
Her father replied: "Listen Astrid, he's actually a very smart boy, and someone who has a heart. he doesn't deserve to be treated like that by the village. And who else your age would you marry? We know you hate Snotlout and that's why we rejected Stoicks offer on that, but Hiccup is the best choice!"
"I don't want to marry ANYBODY especially HICCUP, that's why I'm going to be a shield maiden!"
Hiccup didn't stick around to listen to the rest of the conversation. Hearing someone who he loved for the past I don't know 5 years? Call him all the things Snotlout and the twins call him while he gets beaten up broke him internally. Hiccup felt like he ws being torn apart from the inside. Hiccup breifly considered the cliff that was so close, but quickly Toothless came to his rescue. Calming him and telling him he was better than any of these vikings, and that when Hiccup made his decision. Why did he stay? He could leave now. He had mastered the tail and flying with Toothless. In the years past Hiccup had considered leaving many times, but what was he going to do? Just float on a boat? He also used to be a heir and had the brief fantasy of killing a dragon and getting Astrid to love him, but now...
Hiccup hastened his pace to the cove.
"You sure you want to do this Hiccup?"
"YES, yes, I should've done this ages ago!"
Hiccup scrambled into the cove and climbed onto Toothless. As they flew up Hiccup knew he didn't have anything tying him down to that island anymore.
As Hiccup urged Toothless higher he looked around at the sky, closed his eyes and breathed in the scent of the fresh air.
He was leaving. He was free.
A/N: Welp, here u go! I kinda skipped through the whole Toothless and the tail thing because the movie portrayed it good enough and I didn't feel like waiting another chapter just because I wanted to write 1000 words about the exact thing the movie already said.
A request---------Besides that I've been recieving a lot of hate on fanfiction.net (mostly private PM's) and wattpad because of my decision on the pairing (and no not u Naddersofthestar) and any ecouraging reviews would really help! Cya :D.
