Cole entered his home with a silence being louder than the door. That was strange, his father was supposed to be working today. Maybe he took a day of to go on a date with his mother.
The black-haired was told that Lilly was getting better, and soon enough she may be cured from her illness, and she can finally go back to her job as being an art teacher, and maybe start to bake Cole cakes again, and start walking again. And maybe, just maybe, she can teach Cole to fight again.
The ten year old couldn't wait to tell them about his day; it was awesome. It first started off by one of his best friends returning after breaking his leg the month prior. It was such a surprise to him, and that left his happiness high already. But then, he found out his miserable old teacher was off sick, and he got his favourite subsitute teacher! The teacher brought in sweets and chocolate for the kids to eat at the end of the day, and he did a two hour long art lesson!
But somehow, the day wasn't satisfied with making Cole the happiest he's ever been.
Becuase then, he was able to get an extra 15 minutes for break and he got to leave 30 minutes earlier than the rest of his elementary school.
The boy walked back with a few of his best friends, talking about art and the mario games happily while they smiled and laughed about.
Cole sighed happily as he plopped his back down on the floor and took his jacket off, placing it on the coat hooks beside him, then later taking his shoes off and walking off into the kitchen. Which was also quiet.
Dad is supposed to be starting on dinner right now..Cole thought to himself. he checked the time, and saw it was 3:24pm. Maybe he's gone out on a walk for food? But he would've left a note to Cole saying where he was and that dinner was going to be late.
But then his excitment rose when he realised that he could be getting takeaway for dinner tonight! He smiled wider and did a little victory dance to himself, his socks sliding against the tiled floor while he smoothly grabbed a glass and filled it up with water, before taking a few sips and placing it onto the counter gently, making sure his unsual super strength didn't smash it. He was visibly very fit for a ten year old in elementary school, it honestly concerned him, but every time he tried to ask his mom or dad they didn't answer, and changed the subject. And after a while, he just let it be and carried on with his life.
Anyway, he walked out of the kitchen, then ran up the stairs yelling his parents to come and listen to his day, abot how good it was and how happy he felt at the moment, and he know they'll love to hear about his friend returning after a pretty serious injury to his leg where the doctors thought they would have to amputate it. It horrified everyone that the boy knew, and he was glad that in the end it wasn't the case and he was okay now.
But when he called for his mother and father, no one answered.
Cole was a bit worried now, but kept his happiness and pride up, assuming they were both asleep after a long day, hopefully of going out on a date or out at the beach.
But again, one of them would leave a letter on the door or something saying that they've gone out.
The mossy-eyed boy shrugged it off, the last possible reason is that they were both asleep and didn'y hear him, maybe because they were listening to music as well?
Cole walked down the hall and reached his mother and father's door. The said object was creaked open the tiniest bit, so if Cole were to look in he's only see the headboard of their bed, and the light of the sun bouncing off it.
He carefully creaked the door open. "Mom, dad! Guess what I did toda-"
He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw the scene in front of him.
His father was pale, his hear messy and his clothing not even fully on right. The red bow tie he usually wore with pride was lossely hanging on the back of his neck. It just looks like a red string lay there, with no intentions ever again. His brown vest-coat was laying dead on the floor, as if it had been dropped in shock and left there to collect dust and dirt while the owner of the piece of clothing sat on a chair..tears dripping down from his face and his body shaking.
..And he was holding the pale hand of his wife, unable to look at his son in the eyes so instead he stared at the limb, tears of pain and grief dripping onto the palm of it every-so-often.
And that's when Cole realised.
No no no no no..she can't be gone..she can't. She was getting better! His dad promised that!
His heart shattered like window in his heard, the remainder of the shards were to dig into his mind, poking at his denial and anger while the coating of water layered onto his green eyes.
"N-No..she..s-she's just sleeping right..?" The boy asked with a shaky voice, backing up into the wall as a small smile of hope and denial appeated while he looked at his father in the eyes and saw both of their despair reflected into each other's hearts.
"..M-Mom..? Please don't g-go..me and dad can't live without y-you.."
Lou sighed as he kissed Lilly's hand softly, shivering as the cold from the limp hand radiated against him. "Cole, l-look..I-"
"NO!"
And just then, the ten year old screamed, sinking to the floor and shaking in pain. His tears soaked his shirt while he tried to keep himself sat up, but his heartbroken mind made him collapse onto the floor, screaming and sobbing hysterically.
"SHE CAN'T BE GONE!" He yelled out again. "THE DOCTORS SAID SHE WAS GETTING BETTER!" His grief nearly turning into anger, he refrained himself from punching the wooden floor, but with very little tolerance to listen to himself.
"I COULDN'T EVEN SAY GOODBYE!"
At this point, Lou dejectedly let go of his wife's hand and rushed up to his boy, holding him up as they both sobbed.
And it felt like that for the rest of the long, heartbreaking days ahead.
