U - Ugly

Manami walks by herself towards the library. The school library had just bought new chemistry books and Manami couldn't wait to read them. She was about to enter the library when 3 girls block her way.

"So you're the girl who's seen everywhere with Karma-sama huh."

"Eh?"

The girls pulls Manami outside and into the open.

"Why are you after Karma sama huh? Is it money? I'm sure it's money." Says one of the girls.

"What are you all saying, Karma kun and I are friends."

"Friends? You'd better not be that either, he can't be friends with someone as ugly as you."

"Ugly." Manami was heartbroken to hear that word.

"Yeah, you're ugly. Look at your hair, look at those ugly glasses, look at your uniform. Ugh.... Karma sama is being really nice to you."

"Stay away from him and if we ever see you with him again, you're going to get it from us, okay." Warned one of the girls.

Manami hadn't been to class for the last 2 days and she had informed the teachers that she was not feeling well. Karma on the other hand was well aware, that wasn't the reason. She looked upset since the day before she was absent. He decided to visit her after school.

Manami was in her room, laying in her bed. She wasn't sleeping but she didn't look awake either.

"You don't look sick to me." Calls out Karma's voice.

A surprised Manami gets up and turns towards the window but she doesn't see him there. Karma clears his throat and Manami sees that he was standing in the door.

"Karma kun, why are you here?" Questions Manami.

"Your mom is really worried about you. She told me you haven't eaten since yesterday."

"H-How did you get in. I locked the door." Asks Manami.

"Bitch sensei taught us how to pick locks. She's one smart assassin if you ask me, if only she wasn't so crazy about Karasuma sensei."

Manami turns her eyes away, she was upset about something.

"Won't you tell me what happened?" Says Karma.

"Nothing happened Karma kun. I'm just not feeling well." Answers Manami while still not looking at him.

Karma take Manami's hands and pulls her close and makes her look at him.

"Don't you trust me?"

Manami remains still for a while before she lays her head down on his chest, she wasn't crying but it seems like she just wanted to feel comfortable. Karma brushes her head to comfort her.

"Karma kun, do you know the reason why I'm always studying chemistry." Asks Manami.

"Hmm------- now that you say, I am interested in knowing." Says Karma.

"I was a fresher in Kunugigaoka and I really liked this senpai who was in his final year and after having enough courage, I asked him out."

"And?" Karma looked curious.

Flashback starts

"Mori-senpai, I really like you. Would you please go out with me?" Confessed Manami.

"Okuda Manami san right?" Says Mori.

"Y-Yes." Answers a blushing Manami.

"I'm really sorry Manami san but I have to decline your proposal." Answers Mori with a creepy smile across his face.

"Oh... Okay. I'm sorry for taking your time." Manami was disappointed.

"Well you did waste my time. How about you make up for it."

"Heh?" Manami was confused, she didn't understand what Mori senpai meant.

"Spend a night with me at my place." He smirks.

Manami was in disbelief, was she really hearing what this guy said.

"W-What are you saying senpai? I-I'm your junior."

"So what? Aren't you dying to date me?"

"That's not what I want to do. I just like you-"

"Oh and you think I'll like you back."

Manami was silent.

"Someone as ugly as you."

Manami was shocked, how could he use such words. He could've just turn her down.

"Ugly?"

"What? Did you think you're good looking?" Mori breaks into laughter.

Manami couldn't answer, she was embarrassed.

"Only an idiot would date you. Have you seen your twin braids? Your thick nerdy glasses? I'd be embarrassed to go out with you."

He continued with his insults till Manami couldn't take him anymore and runs away crying.

Flashback ends.

"I didn't go to class for a whole week and I found chemistry, it helped me forget about him until day before yesterday."

Manami details Karma the incident with the girls as well. Karma sighs, he understood how Manami felt.

"Am I really that ugly? Is being ugly so wrong?" Asks a desperate Manami.

"Oh you're beautiful. You're really beautiful." Says Karma.

"You're just saying that. Look at Kanzaki san and then look at me. I really am ugly."

"Physically yes, Kanzaki san is much more good looking than you and the girls from our class but beauty doesn't have a definition. It's in the eye of the beholder"

"What do you mean?" Manami looked Visibly confused, she was bad at literature so what Karma was saying was not making sense at all.

"It means the definition of beauty is upto an individual and I find you beautiful because you are honest with your words, you're beautiful because you speak and stand up for the right thing. Beauty isn't just about looks, it's about how a person is. A person is beautiful by how he behaves, not by how he looks. That Mori guy and those girls maybe physically good looking but they're actually the ugly ones here. You on the other hand are the most beautiful moment I've ever met."

Manami blushed but she felt a little happy hearing those words coming from Karma. She smiles.

"Your words always comfort me, Karma kun."

Karma smiles back. He was happy to know that Manami felt comfortable with him.

"Thank you for making me realise I'm not ugly." She chuckles.

"Okay, how about we have food now. Coincidentally your mom cooked my favorite food as well."

Karma extends his hand and Manami gladly takes it and heads down with him to the kitchen.

A few weeks later Manami goes through news in her phone when she comes through an article of Mori being beaten brutally by someone, so much so that he broke a fourth of his front teeth. She turns to Karma and shows him the news, his nonchalant reply made Manami suspicious but she didn't question him. The two walk towards the library when Manami sees the tree girls talking among themselves. Their eyes meet and the girls suddenly looked horrified and ran away as fast as possible, Manami again turns to Karma who was smiling at the girls but the smile looked cold and empty. Manami was getting suspicious again.

"Karma kun did you-"

"Shhh-------we're in the library, maintain silence please." Winks Karma.

Manami couldn't ask what she had doubts about and he never gave her the chance as well.
