The following icy morning, Aria decided that she wanted to take a walk around the Hogwarts grounds so she could clear her head. It had certainly been an eventful few days and the alcohol hadn't exactly helped with any of that. As she placed this matter aside, though, she kept walking on down the hall until she saw the familiar Slytherin robes of one Theodore Nott.
"Hey," he said.
"Hi," Aria said, taken slightly by surprise. Why in Helga's name was Theodore Nott actually greeting her? Which reality had she stepped into in which such a thing was possible?
"What are you up to this morning?" he asked her, as his eyes brightened slightly.
"I was just taking a walk. Why?" Aria returned, with an expression of curiosity evident on her face. She truly was intrigued as to why Theodore Nott, of all people, was taking an interest in what she was doing, but she didn't mind it all that much. It was nice to not be antagonized by one of Malfoy's cronies for once.
"I was about to go and fly my broom on the Quidditch pitch. Do you want to join? It'll be fun!" Theodore said, with intense excitement apparent in his voice.
It also took Aria by surprise to see Theodore being so happy but this was also rather pleasant, too.
"Sure," she said, with a shrug. She just hoped that she wouldn't live to regret the slightly impulsive decision to go anywhere with a Slytherin student. She believed it would be fine, though. After all, during their last meeting, Theo hadn't given Aria nearly as much grief as Malfoy had. The memory made her grimace.
"I love going out here. It's one of the only opportunities I have to get away from the castle nowadays and it's..." Theo trailed off.
"Nice. I know," Aria said.
McGonagall had instructed for most of the students to remain within the school whenever possible due to the fact that the defense spells she had set up tended to work on the main castle. Either way, Aria knew that they couldn't be cooped up forever.
Soon enough, Aria was given a broom by Theo and while she usually didn't occupy much confidence in flying, she found that her time flying around the pitch with Theo was actually extremely fun! It was exhilarating and slightly terrifying, but fun all the same.
As Aria managed to calm down her breathing, she soon turned to Theo to give him a bright smile and surprisingly enough, Theo smiled back at her.
"Hey!" someone called out to the two of them and Aria soon turned to see a familiar blond making his way towards them. He soon came to a stop a short distance away from Aria and she quickly made her smile into a more serious expression.
"Hi Draco!" Theo said, with a great grin.
Draco didn't look quite so thrilled to be there, but he managed a small smile despite himself.
"Hi," he said. He took a deep breath, then, and turned towards Aria. "Hufflepuff."
"Malfoy," she replied. It felt so easy to say his surname now, as though it was an instinct. She couldn't help but grit her teeth a little after she had said it, though. His presence was continuing to grow more and more annoying but, she supposed, he probably thought the same thing about her.
"Can I talk to you for a second?" Malfoy asked.
"No," Aria replied curtly.
Malfoy's grey eyes narrowed to slits then. She was not about to make him say it.
"Hufflepuff," he said.
Aria shrugged, as she responded with ease, "Malfoy?".
After he ran a hand through his hair in his frustration, Malfoy grabbed a hold of Aria's forearm and pulled her to the side of the Quidditch pitch with him.
"I needed to tell you something. Honestly. The other day...I got angry. I still meant what I said but- I shouldn't have said it like that," he said.
Was he actually showing remorse for once in his life?
Aria felt tempted to laugh, but she was too astounded to do so.
"Draco pie!" another voice called out then and Aria watched as Malfoy's expression became far more irritated than it did when even she was around.
After he had plastered a winning smile onto his face, he turned around.
"Astoria," he said in greeting.
Astoria rushed over to Aria and Malfoy and glared at Aria with disfavour.
"What are you doing with the filthy little half-blood?" she asked.
"Don't call her that," Malfoy said.
"Why?" Astoria asked, as she folded her arms in front of her chest. Her eyebrows creased together and her hand balled up into a fist.
"'Cause that's what I call her. Not you," he said.
"It doesn't change the fact that's what it is," Astoria said, as she turned back to Aria with narrowed eyes.
Malfoy scoffed then, as his head shook slightly.
"You know what, Astoria? I wasn't thinking I was going to do this today but allow me to be honest and direct with you. You annoy the living hell out of me. Being around you has started to become more insufferable than being around Aria is. You and I may have had something at one point or other but that is...in the past. It's not as though I exactly look back on those times with fondness, either. So, leave, Astoria. You and I are done," he said.
"You're breaking up with me?" Astoria asked him.
As she asked the question, her voice cracked but Draco appeared perfectly un-phased by this as he nodded in response to her question.
"What? You hang around with Hufflepuffs now, or something?" Astoria asked.
Draco beamed back at her, as he replied.
"Apparently they aren't the worst kind of company," he said, as his eyes glanced towards Aria then.
Aria thought she may have just imagined it but his expression seemed a little warmer, somehow.
A cold breeze passed around the four, then.
Theo looked as though he wished that he had brought some popcorn onto the Quidditch pitch with him.
Aria looked on at the two of them partially stunned and partially pleasantly surprised by Malfoy's defense of her.
"Well, if that's how you feel, have fun when Voldy comes back, Draco. He'll probably go for your traitorous ass first," she said, before she walked away with a face as dark as thunder.
