"Damon, stop," Klaus said, trying to sound firm.

But Damon didn't listen. Instead, he continued trailing kisses down Klaus's neck, his lips warm against Klaus's skin, igniting a fire deep within him.

"Love, you need to stop," Klaus tried again, his voice a mix of desperation and desire.

But Damon resumed kissing Klaus's neck, then found his way back to his lips, their mouths colliding with an urgency that sent both of them reeling. Klaus bit back a moan as Damon deepened the kiss, pulling him into a world where nothing else mattered. Yet, deep down, Klaus knew that Damon wasn't ready for this. No matter what Damon thought, he had to put an end to it before they did something they couldn't come back from.

"Love, we need to get going," Klaus urged, his voice strained.

Damon pulled back, breathing heavily. "I know, I'm sorry. Yeah, let's get going."

As Damon straightened up, Klaus couldn't help but notice how flushed he looked, his lips swollen and a vibrant shade of red. Klaus had to fight the urge to suck on them forever. But he knew Damon wasn't in the right headspace, and he refused to take advantage of him. No matter what kind of monster people thought he was, he would never stoop that low.

"Why do you want to go back to Mystic Falls anyway?" Damon asked, breaking the silence. "There's nothing for you there."

"My family is in Mystic Falls. Rebekah is in Mystic Falls," Klaus replied, his voice steady.

"You mean to tell me that you left her there?" Damon raised an eyebrow, disbelief coloring his tone. "What about the rest of your family? Where are they? Or did you dagger all of them?"

Klaus kept his eyes on the road, not replying to any of Damon's questions. The tension in the car thickened, a palpable weight hanging in the air between them.

Damon's eyes widened in shock. "Wait, you mean to tell me that your whole family is daggered somewhere in Mystic Falls right now? Unprotected? Wow, brother of the century right here, folks."

"Don't talk about my family, Damon," Klaus snapped, the tension in his voice rising. "We all have our family issues. I won't ask about yours if you don't ask about mine. Deal?"

"Okay, but one question," Damon said, his curiosity getting the better of him. "Why?"

"So that they can never leave me," Klaus replied, the truth hanging heavily between them.

Damon shook his head, disbelief etched across his face. "And for your information, mate, I would never leave my family unprotected."

The silence in the car deepened as they continued driving, the landscape rushing past them. Both men were lost in their thoughts, the weight of unspoken words filling the space between them.

Damon glanced at Klaus, who seemed to be lost in his own world, his jaw set in determination. He couldn't help but wonder what it must be like to carry the burden of family legacy on his shoulders, to feel the need to protect them at all costs. But there was a darkness there too, a fear of abandonment that Damon recognized all too well.

"What's it like?" Damon asked suddenly, breaking the silence.

Klaus turned his head slightly, confusion flickering in his eyes. "What do you mean?"

"To have family. To have people you care about so much that you'd do anything to keep them close, even if it means... locking them away."

Klaus's expression shifted, a flicker of vulnerability crossing his face before he masked it. "It's complicated, Damon. Family is a double-edged sword. They can bring you joy, but they can also be your downfall."

Damon nodded, feeling a strange kinship with Klaus in that moment. "I get that. I've done terrible things to protect my family too."

Klaus glanced at him, searching his face for any hint of dishonesty. "But you have a brother," he said, his voice softening. "You have people who care about you. You can't lose that, Damon. Don't shut them out."

"I know," Damon replied, his voice heavy with unspoken regret. "But it's hard. Trusting people, letting them in... it's difficult when you've been burned before."

Klaus turned fully to face Damon now, his eyes intense. "Then let me help you, Damon. I won't let anyone hurt you. I promise."

Damon looked at Klaus, the sincerity in his eyes undeniable. "I'm not sure how to let anyone in, Klaus. Not after everything."

"I know," Klaus said quietly. "But I'm not asking you to let everyone in. Just me. Just this."

The moment hung between them, charged with possibilities. Damon felt the weight of Klaus's words settle in his chest, both comforting and terrifying.

They drove in silence for a while longer, the sun beginning to set on the horizon, casting a warm glow over the landscape. It was a beautiful sight, and for a moment, they both let the weight of their pasts slip away, focusing on the road ahead and the journey still to come.

"Let's just get through Mystic Falls first," Damon said finally, breaking the quiet. "We'll deal with everything else after that."

Klaus nodded, a small smile creeping onto his lips. "Together then. No matter what."

"Together," Damon agreed, and for the first time in a long time, he felt a flicker of hope.
