Jake POV

I woke up on a cold floor and squinted against the bright, interrogation-like lighting. I pushed myself up with a grunt and took in my bleak surroundings. I was in a room no bigger than a classroom. It was entirely made of metal, with hardly any furnishings. There was a heavy door that I tried opening, but to no avail. There was an air vent in the ceiling, but I couldn't escape that way. I had no clue where I was, nor why I was here.

A female voice echoed through the room, making me shiver. "Hello, Jake. I know you have a lot of questions, but please keep them in until after the experiment." Experiment? What experiment? "I didn't sign up for any experiment," I turned around, trying to find the source of the voice. I jumped when I saw my reflection in one of the walls. My reflection mimicked me, a look of shock and confusion on its face.

The woman spoke again, "You were randomly picked out of thousands for this. You should be grateful. When you get out of this, we'll pay you handsomely for your cooperation." I paused. I really did need the money. I lost my job and had no other way to support me and my wife. But I wasn't so desperate that I would agree to something I didn't know anything about. I looked up at the ceiling and spoke, "Okay, but I'll need to know what I'm getting myself into."

The woman clapped her hands excitedly. "Wonderful! I'll tell you everything you need to know." I sat down and listened to her explain what was going on. "Scientists have a theory that if you look into a mirror too long, you'll go insane. We decided to test that theory. We already have with animals, and it seemed perfectly safe. The next step is humans."

"Wait wait wait, you're telling me that this is to see if I'll go insane? Hell no, I'm out of here." I walked briskly to the door and tried turning the handle, but it didn't budge. "H-hey, let me out of here!" My hands started shaking. The woman spoke once more, the words slowly coming across, "Jake. You will pull the lever and turn off the lights." Her tone suggested that something bad would happen if I didn't. I glanced at the large lever across the room. "Jake..."

I reached the lever and grabbed it, swinging it down. It came down easier than I expected, and the extra force brought me to my knees. The room turned dark, only lit up enough for me to see the large mirror. I reluctantly stood up and walked to the middle of the room. I lifted my head and stared at my reflection.

There's nothing wrong with it. It's just me. Me in this cold, dark, inescapable room. I stared for a minute, silent and not moving. My eyes wandered around the room's reflection. How much longer am I going to have to do this? It's stupid.

My attention snapped back to the reflection. Did I just... move? I felt my heart race. I didn't move, but I could've sworn I saw my head twitch to the side. My breath caught in my throat. It did it again. I-is that really me?

The vent clanged to the floor, breaking the silence. I winced and looked behind me...

The vent was still screwed into the ceiling.

I whipped back around to look at the mirror, and sure enough, the vent was on the ground. I stared at myself, my head swinging in impossible angles but still managing to keep eye contact with me. "T-that's not me...that's a monster." The small amount of light in the room was gradually turning red. I held my head in my hands and squeezed my eyes shut, my ears ringing. I made the mistake of glancing at the mirror again. I stared in horror at the blood oozing from the walls. Dark red liquid dripped from the ceiling and around me.

The door creaked open, and I turned on my heel, running for my escape. I stopped short. The door was still closed. I turned back to the mirror, my eyes wide. There the door was open. I placed a palm on the flat surface, willing myself to go through and out of here.

A figure stepped into the room. I stared at the mirror. Did I know this person? They seemed familiar, but I couldn't place it. They walked up to me slowly. Realization hit me when they placed a slender hand on my shoulder. The relief I felt when she looked up at me almost knocked me off my feet. She was going to take me away now, take me away from this place, and we would go home.

Then she held up a knife. I turned around quickly. If what was in the reflection wasn't real, then she wasn't real, and she wouldn't hurt me. But this time, she was still there. She pushed me to the ground and climbed on top of me, pinning me down with her legs. I looked up at her watery eyes. "Why Jake? Why did you leave me?"

"L-leave you? I never left you, I swear! I love you with all that I am!" Tears flowed down my cheeks as she peeled her gaze away from my face. "Then why are you here? You should be home with me," her voice cracked. I couldn't bear seeing her like this. She took a shuddering breath and turned back to me, remorse in her gaze. "Goodbye, Jake." She lifted the knife.

"No, please! You don't have to do this!" I froze as she plunged the knife into my heart.
