-Early update, yay! I didn't need to wait until next Monday for this, I am a few chapters ahead right now.

Now, here we go with Vaskr and Stormfly. This one will be longer than chapter one, and mostly slow-paced, but it will delve a bit deeper into what makes Vaskr who he is. This one will start in the past, little more than a week before Auroon and Aurora landed at the Queen's old volcano nest. Enjoy!

"Not interested," I muttered, knowing exactly what she was going to say.

"But-"

"No," I interrupted, stepping around another tree. This would've been a nice, calming walk through the dark forest if it weren't for a hopeless female following me around. Her lack of night vision caused her to trip over almost everything, effectively scaring off any prey that happened to be nearby, much to my annoyance.

"I just-"

"Don't care."

"Why won't you listen to me?" She shouted in frustration.

I stopped walking to turn and stare at the small, green Tail-Biter with a bored expression. "You only want me because I'm the alpha's son and a Soulburner," I droned, repeating the same words I've said a hundred times over, albeit with other females. "You don't care about who I really am; you don't make an effort to get to know me; your desires are shallow and empty."

"That's not true!"

That's what literally all of them say.

I sat down with a groan of annoyance, my tail twitching behind me. "Let's say I believed you; if it isn't for power or status, then how would we work together? There is an obvious size difference here. Soulburners can't truly be mates with anybody if they can't actually do the 'act.'" That wasn't completely true, but I wanted someone that I could have the full experience of the Mate's Bond with. The way Dad explained it sounded amazing, and I wanted to have that too.

Her jaw moved up and down as she struggled to come up with something to counter that. Her wings drooped more and more as the seconds ticked by. "W-We could just work it out?" She offered weakly.

I frowned, standing up and walking away. "Not a chance."

"Fine!" She hissed, suddenly angry. "Be that way! Keep going like this, and you'll never have a mate, you jerk!" I stiffened, forcing myself to keep walking calmly; her words felt like a strike to the gut.

What if she was right? What if I never found the 'right one?' Was I too picky? I didn't think my standards were too high; I only wanted someone with the same—or close to the same—species as me, someone with a strong mind and heart, someone who loved me for my faults and strengths, someone with a personality that didn't grate on my nerves, and, of course, someone who was nice to look at. Maybe I should take the females here seriously, they might be my only options for-

"What are you doing?"

"AIEEE!" I shrieked, leaping a good tail-length into the air in fright. Once I landed, I whirled around with teeth bared in anger, only for my vision to turn white. I blinked, going cross-eyed to see... white scales? With a sinking feeling in my gut, I took a slow step back to see two blue eyes looking back at me in the darkness. "Oh, heh... Hi, Mom..."

"Hello to you, too," She replied neutrally. We sat in an awkward silence after that, neither of us knowing what to say. I had no doubt Nana Moon put her up to this, it wasn't as if this hasn't happened before.
