"NO! You're doing it wrong."
"is there really a wrong way to count stars.?"
You shook your head vigorously, scooching closer to where he was lying back-down on the grass. "If you go all over the place, you'll count the same star twice. You have to right to left not like this and then this and then that." You moved your arms haphazardly with every this, making him laugh slightly
"Okay, okay, I'll do it properly now." He relaxed further into the grass, raising his arm to point at the sky. "One, two, three, four, five, six-" He went on for a little, pointing at each star for each number, and you took the opportunity to slide a bit closer to him
His vague sent of vanilla merged with the freshness of the grass, and you couldn't help but bury your head into his neck, taking a deep whiff before peeking back out and looking at the sky. He was counting the twentieth star or so, but you found yourself admitting his face was much, much more interesting to look at than the stars above.
You nestled into his side, pulling yourself closer, him still lying on his back but you on your hip. You wrapped one of your arms around him, nestling into his neck once more, using the other hand to fidget with his face; pinching his cheeks, lightly tugging his hair, scratching his nose-
Schlatt didn't stop counting the stars, not wanting to loose his count, but he rubbed your back with his free arm, tangling his legs in yours, occasionally tilting closer to your ear, so you could feel his warm breath all over your face, sending tingles down your spine.
You closed your eyes in relaxation, careful not to fall asleep.
It had been so, so long since the two of you had been alone like this.
You weren't ready to let the moment slide anytime soon.
"Forty-three," he finished finally, turning his head so your noses touched. "I can see forty-three stars"
You frowned. looking up. You'd counted them a moment before- but there were only forty-two. The sky was clear as well, not a cloud to be seen. Had you missed something?
"No, there are only forty-two," you said, leaning onto him as you guided his arm, pointing at all the stars once again for him to see. so you weren't wrong. There were only forty-two. "See? Forty-two."
"No," Schlatt said, shaking his head. In an instant, he flipped you over, forcing you onto your back and looming above you on all fours, as close to you as he could muster. "You forgot this one."
He closed the distance between you, almost completely lying down on you, but keeping his arms steady for the slightest bit of sturdiness, kissing you for what felt like the first time.
He pulled away eventually, though reluctant to do so, still rubbing his nose against your face, making you giggle. "Ohhh, you were talking about yourself," you teased, wrapping your arms around his neck and pulling him onto you again.
Schlatt pinched your mouth between your cheeks, making you look like a fish, forcing your gaze upon his again. "No, you idiot, I was talking about you."
His smile shone like stars after dark, with no city lights to dim them. For in that moment time stopped to stare and admire him.
