monique drummed her sky-blue nails on the desk, staring at the laptop screen in front of her in feigned disinterest. she was in the library, books surrounding her little area she had made for herself, waiting on the man of the hour to make his appearance. she sighed as she checked the time, he was over two hours late and she was ready to leave. it wasn't the first time her boyfriend stood her up and she knew it wouldn't be the last. she started packing up her stuff, disappointment seeping its way into her emotions. as she was packing up, a throat cleared and she looked up to find someone standing in front of her workspace. "hey, uh, monique right? you're in my media class." she looked at the man closely, taking in his features and vaguely remembered that he sat to the right of her, near the back in the lecture hall. he was cute, she noted, very cute. "oh yes, uhh kadeem right?" he nodded and smiled, the action lighting up his face and making him all the more attractive. "that's right. i was wondering if you can tutor me? you seem to be pretty good, especially in grasping the work quicker than most." monique weighed out her options, unsure on whether she should take his offer or not. "i'll pay you. please, i could use the help." looking into his eyes and seeing the hopefulness there, she nodded. "okay, but you don't have to pay me. just be on time for our sessions. let's exchange numbers so we can set up what days to meet on." he nodded and pulled out his phone, an iphone 7 that had seen better days and watched as monique put in her number while he did the same with her phone. "let me walk you out, it's the least i could do." she nodded and they walked out the library in silence, not quite comfortable but not awkward either.
as they were outside, monique spotted her boyfriend with his friends and rolled her eyes. of course he was with them, not a day goes by when he wasn't. she knew he spotted her by the way she could feel his eyes burning holes in her back as she looked at kadeem who was already glancing down at her. "so i'll text you? or will you text?" she smiled at his nervous demeanor and touched his forearm briefly. "kadeem, relax. i'll text you later tonight after i look over my schedule okay?" he nodded. "okay, so i'll see you?" she nodded and watched as he made his way back into the library. she breathed in and turned around, squaring her shoulders as she made her way past her boyfriend and his friends. "hey monique!" she rolled her eyes and kept walking as kevin - her boyfriend's best friend - yelled out her name. he must be stupid to think she was going to answer. she heard footsteps catching up to her and a hand touch her forearm. "baby." she rolled her eyes and turned around to meet his blue gaze. "what do you want, andrew?" his lips twitched and she had the sudden urge to slap him. he really thought shit was sweet. "are you mad?" he grinned and she snatched her arm back, walking away before she lost her temper in public. little by little, he was showing a different side to him that she didn't like. one she didn't think he had when they first started talking and she missed the way he used to care for her, pay attention to her and most importantly, not treat her like shit. she definitely deserved better.
short chapter but eh.
