The apartment was almost completely decorated, we just needed a few more items then we could call it home. Lily was my best friend for about three years and now we have moved into an apartment together to have fresh start on life. The town we left had a lot of issues and was too dangerous for us to stay there. This new town may be just as dangerous but, for right now, this unknown was better than what we left behind. Lily and I were not normal human beings, we were werewolves, about half of the world's population were wolves but we keep that hidden from the regular humans although a few do know about us.
My parents ran a pack back at home and I was a part of that pack and they were upset with me since I left. They understood why but they didn't really like the idea of me leaving. Lily's parents were just as upset with her but we wanted a way out and to do that we needed to cut the ties with our old pack.
"Are you scared Maddie?" Lily asked which made me look up from the bookshelf that I was trying to arrange.
"I'm not going to lie, I am pretty scared." I sighed. This whole situation was very nerve-wracking.
"I know just the thing you need!" she exclaimed excitedly "We should go running."
The apartment was directly in front of the woods and the sun was setting so no humans would be there.
I smiled then nodded in agreement. We walked out the back door and broke out into a sprint. I felt my body shudder and a pleasant and familiar wave of heat ran through me so I leaped into the air and felt my body shift. When I landed it wasn't on two legs but on four paws. I looked down at them, I had gold coloured fur that was exactly like my mother's with a red streak behind my left ear, or so I was told.
My head tilted and I looked at Lily, her wolf was gorgeous. She was small but powerful, her fur was mostly brown with black in a couple areas around her body and her eyes in both human and wolf form were a striking blue. We raced through the woods for a couple minutes in silence.
"Having fun?" the words ran though my head.
"Of course, we haven't done this in so long." I laughed happily.
One of the features of being a wolf is telepathy- we can talk to each other through thoughts. We can read each other's minds but we put up a 'wall' in order to protect our thoughts when we have finished speaking but if the alpha tells you to take it down, you must. Mates also have their own 'channel' where they can take down their 'wall' and speak to each other but the rest of the pack cannot hear what they are saying.
Our conversation went on and we kept running deeper into the woods as it got darker.
Snap
My ears pricked and I stopped but Lily kept running until she realised that I wasn't following her.
"Why did you stop?" She questioned.
"I thought I heard something." I shook my head.
"You're paranoid, Maddie."
She bolted and I ran after her, the noise was all in my head. I passed her and kept running until I saw something coming towards me. I focused on it as it stepped forward, it was a large black wolf. We were trespassing. It bared its fangs at us and growled. We stopped sprinting. The wolf stepped towards us and we stepped back. It was warning us. Two seconds later I heard more growling so I looked around only to see seven more menacing wolves. We were screwed.
"Oh sh-" I started but was cut off.
"Maddie!"
