As I walked to the front of the hall I noticed that everyone was looking at us all silently. I saw a stool with an old brown hat on it, I guessed that was the sorting hat my Dad had told me about. All of the first years including myself lined up at the front of the hall with great anticipation when suddenly the hat burst into song

"Oh,you may not think I'm pretty,
But don't judge on what you see,
I'll eat myself if you can find A smarter hat than me.
You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat and I can cap them all.
There's nothing hidden in your head The Sorting Hat can't see,
So try me on and I will tell you where you ought to be.
You might belong in Gryffindor, where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry set Gryffindors apart.
You might belong in Hufflepuff where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true and unafraid of toil.
Or yet in wise old old Ravenclaw, If you've a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning will always find their kind.
Or perhaps in Slytherin, You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folk use any means to achieve their ends.
So put me on!
Don't be afraid!
And don't get in a flap!
You're in safe hands
(though I have none)
For I'm a Thinking Cap!"

The whole hall broke into applause. Ah, So that is the sorting hat I thought. Then the Professor called out
"Abbot Hannah" a girl with shoulder length blonde hair walked up nervously and sat on the stool
"Better be... HUFFLEPUFF" the hat called out, applause erupted from a table second from the right and Hannah skipped over to join them soon after Heather Hallows was sorted into Hufflepuff, Hermione Granger was sorted into Gryffindor when suddenly the professor called out
"Lovegood Amelia" My heart was in my throat as I walked up to the stool as you sat down the professor set the hat on my head
"Hmm, difficult" the hat said "There's courage, yes, and a great thirst to prove yourself. There's a brave deal of Intelligence, perhaps Ravenclaw would suit, plenty of creativity, hmm, You're not afraid to be yourself, Ravenclaw would be a good fit. But, then again, you value hard-work and patience. You're very loyal. Goodness, I can't decide where you should go, Hmm, Okay, better be... HUFFLEPUFF"

I grinned and walked over to join the Hufflepuffs, I sat down next to a girl with long ginger hair flowing down her back
"Hello I'm Heather Hallows" she told me
"Pleasure to meet you, I'm Amelia Lovegood" I replied and then turned my attention back to the hat just in time to hear Rose Lestrange get sorted into Ravenclaw she ran over to where must be the Ravenclaw table. Draco Malfoy strolled up to the stool and sat down, the professor placed the hat on his head, well it hardly even touched his head, the sorting hat immediately called out
"SLYTHERIN!" he walked over to join the slytherins as the professor called out
"Potter Emmie" suddenly the whole hall fell into whispers
"Potter!? Did she say Potter?" the moment the hat touched her head it called out
"GRYFFINDOR" there was deafening roar of cheers from the table next to me, I had to cover my ears it was so loud
"WE GOT A POTTER" I saw someone who looked quite like Ron shout, I giggled at this, her twin Harry was also sorted into Gryffindor which got the same deafening roar then the professor called out Sophie Riddle some people looked alarmed but I don't understand why. She was sorted into Gryffindor which shocked a few people, then Grace Umbridge was sorted into Hufflepuff, she came and sat next to me and lastly Ronald Weasley (who I knew as Ron) was sorted into Gryffindor. I was a bit disappointed neither Sophie, Harry or Ron were Hufflepuff, I had got on best with them on the train.

Once everyone had been sorted Professor Dumbledore stood up
"I have a few announcements before we start the feast, to our new students the Dark Forest at the edge of the grounds is strictly forbidden and maybe a few of the older students need a reminder," I noticed he glanced in the direction of what seemed to be Ron's older twin brothers "also, this year the third-floor corridor is strictly out of bounds to those who do not wish to die a most painful death" a few people giggled before they realized he was serious "And with that, let the feast begin" he clapped his hands as he said this and food appeared on the table before us

A/N: made this a bit more realistic, I forgot no body knew about Voldy's name being Tom Riddle when I was originally writing this so, low and behold, a more realistic version.
