Pretty (NaNo Day 18)

Darling faces upon
perfect bodies.
Stylish clothes, done-up hair,
hide your face behind layers of powder.
Is this really what
we strive to be?

Did I step outside
not looking perfect?
Scandalous!
I apologise for not
fitting your expectations
or abiding by your rules.

Pressures pushing
for submission.
Conform to be porcelain,
easily chipped away at;
doll-like.
Or be shunned.

I apologise for
being in your way
as your insecurities hit
so that you lash out.
But don't you see
the cycle it creates?

I refuse to join
on this catherine wheel.
Fuel my worry with your words,
I will not pay it
forward with coins of
malice, but love.

Tell your friend
how pretty she looks today.
Compliment your oppressor
even as she spits the words
'ugly', or 'fat' at you.
And remember it's not true.

When you go to add that
powder to your face each morning,
add a little less.
Tell that girl in the mirror
just how damn pretty she is.
Because it's not vanity,
but self-love.
