Oki watched under the shadows of the brim of her hat. Soren, her Hoothoot, was flying high into the sky with the other bird Pokemon, even if it was daylight. He didn’t seem to mind it too much today, eager to stretch his wings and remain high into the sky. Some of the trainers from Falkner’s gym were even riding their larger Pokemon today as well, enjoying the good weather.
She had defeated Falkner, and received the Zephyr badge for her effort, but she figured she and her Pokemon could use the rest, having trained for days on end before the fight with little rest. Her Pokemon deserved a break, after all. Around her, in the forests surrounding Violet City, her other three Pokemon (Ophelia the Kirlia, Sophia the Ponyta and Issac the Eevee) ran about enjoying their day off.
Oki only had eyes for the flying Pokemon at the moment, however.
She had always wondered what it would be like to fly, but her fear of heights had always stopped her from trying. Even when she had the opportunity to. Of course, little Soren wouldn't be able to hold her weight, so even if she wanted to she wouldn’t be able to try it now.
“You look lonely,” a calm and rather soft-spoken voice breaks the silence around her. Oki jumped slightly before turning and glancing up at the Violet City gym leader who stared back down at her unblinkingly.
Oki’s cheeks turned pink and she hurriedly turned back around, her fists clenching her pants legs nervously. During her stay in Violet City she had come to know the man between her training sessions and had fallen for him rather easily. Once you got past his initial, almost-distant, personality he was rather caring and kind.
“N-not at all!”
Falkner seated himself beside her, legs crossed Indian-style as he looked up at where she had been so focused on when he had arrived. “Oh, I see...”
“See what?” Oki inquired shyly, glancing up at the man from under the bill of her beloved hat.
Falkner smiled at her, “Would you like to try flying?” He stood back up, pulling out his Fearow’s Pokeball as he moved and held down his free hand to help Oki up. Oki’s heart sped up at the thought of being so high into the air and she gulped before hesitantly reaching out and grasping Falkner’s hand in her own and allowing him to pull her up onto her feet easily.
“I suppose I could give it a try...” she answered hesitantly and Falkner’s smile grew as he called out Fearow in a the customary flash of light the Pokeball produced as it did so. The large Pokemon gave a content cry, stretching out his wings before ruffling his brown feathers and blinking at his trainer curiously.
“C’mon,” Falkner urged, tugging Oki along with him, and not noticing the pink coloring her cheeks. He hadn’t let go of her hand.
He swung up onto Fearow’s back easily and helped Oki up behind him. She had to scramble to get up and was thankful for the man’s help. She tightly wrapped her arms around his waist, fear already coursing through her at the stunt that she was about to pull. “Ready?” Not knowing if her voice would function properly she nodded into his back and he gave a light chuckle before allowing Fearow to fly.
The experience was a frightening one for Oki and it didn’t last long. She would always remember it, however, and she as glad that she tried it. Now she wouldn’t have to wonder... and she did get to spend time with Falkner...
