The once-mighty city melted away as acid rained down from the sky, wooden houses vanished, becoming sizzling pools on the ground and the animals in their pens dissolved. Everything the acid touched was burned away with little trace it was ever there.

The great Dragon walked through what little remained of the city. Her power was wasted on the Smooth-skins. She killed them so swiftly and yet wondered how they had killed so many of her brothers, sisters, and cousins. This one had weapons, though they were to be transported to be used against the Dragons. Destroying this place was necessary, she thought. Killing them all was necessary.

She heard a faint cry and went to the source. Dissolving the roof, the Dragon found a mound of burned flesh, the noise sounding underneath.

With one shove of her claw, the stack toppled over; the Dragon raised it again to crush the child, but something made him stop. The child was not screaming or thrashing at her as all others did.

She was crying, "mama, papa."

She turned her head to the mound. They must have died protecting their daughter, the Dragon hung her claw the size of the child's body over her, and the child grabbed hold of it. She smiled at the child, and it smiled back, Smooth-skins hated the Dragons as they were raised that way, but this child was young, untainted by their teachings. Perhaps she could change this child if she raised it by herself. The Dragon scooped the child up in her palms, careful not to cleve it in half, spread her heaving wings, and took flight away from where she killed so many.

"I know they will kill us both if they found out, Enordial cared for your kind, gave you elemental energy, and he was banished for it," she lowered her head down so that she could see the child. "We will find somewhere for the two of us," the child was holding her little arms out and smiling, "do not worry, little one. You are safe now."

When she landed on a flat patch of earth, she laid the child down and used her magic to raise vines and twist them into a shelter. She then picked the child up and placed her down on a bed of soft vines she created. The child was curled up, clenching her stomach and groaning slightly.

"A, your kind need to eat unlike us, how about this," the Dragon grew a vine full of fruit that she enjoyed eating herself. She plucked one off and handed it to the child. The fruit was bigger than the child, and they couldn't eat it as the shell was hard. "let me get that for you," the fruit was gently taken and then split by her jaw into pieces the child could eat, which she handed. The child hungrily bit into the fruit, squinted at the taste, through still ate all the fruit.

"I guess we have different tastes, little one," the child held her hands out and was smiling at her. Yes, she would raise this one better than them. After all her flying, she felt tired and used much of her energy to destroy the child's home. So she laid down next to the child and fell asleep; mere moments passed before she woke to the child's screams. She turned her head and saw her shivering in fear as she looked at the entrance.

The Dragon gazed at the entrance to the shelter and heard a growl but didn't sense another Dragon. She shot a stream of acid from her mouth, which was followed by a yelp. She sealed the shelter shut after, making the dome dark, though it was not long until the child cried again.

"You are just like a hatchling," she said as she let her energy flow through the vines, lighting the dome up with green light, and she went back to sleep.

After a long sleep, the child awoke and was hungry again. She remembered the fruit and then saw it dangling from a vine. She gripped and climbed up the vine to reach the fruit, she held out to grab hold of the fruit, but then she fell and cried when she hit the hard ground. The Dragon awoke, nuzzled her with her mouth and saw what she tried to do.
