Chapter 9 - Serum

Minho, Thomas, and I enter the woods and are walking on our path. Minho is in front, Thomas in the middle, and I the back. Whenever someone becomes a runner, Minho and I show them the runner house. This is where the runners meet and and grab their things before entering the maze. It is also where we keep the map of the maze, which is why it is completely forbidden for any glader that is not a runner. Thomas is looking around.
- "Where are we going?" Asks Thomas.
- "You'll see." I answer.
A couple seconds later, I see the runner house and we enter inside. Thomas stares at everything in complete silence. Minho takes off the cover over the map. Thomas looks at the map.
- "Woah."
- "It's the maze." Minho says. "All of it."
- "What do you mean all of it?" Asks Thomas, looking up at us. "I thought you were still mapping  it."
- "There's nothing left to map." Minho says.
- "We've run every inch of it ourselves." I say. "Every cycle. Every pattern." I take a deep breath. "If there was a way out, we would of found it by now."
- "Why haven't you told anyone this?" Asks Thomas.
Minho and I look at each other.
- "It was Alby's call." Says Minho. "People needed to believe we had a real chance of getting out. In order to prevent chaos."
- "But," I say, looking at Thomas, "maybe now we have a real chance." I pull out the metal object we found in the griever from my backpack and give it to Thomas.
- "Take a look at this." Minho says, pointing to the map. "About a year ago we started exploring these outer sections. We found these numbers printed on the walls. From 1 through 8. The way it works is that every night when the maze changes, a new section opens up. Today, section 6 is open. Tomorrow, it'll be 4, then 8, then 3, and so on. The pattern always stays the same, it has never changed."
Thomas doesn't answer. He looks at the object again.
- "Whats special about 7?" Asks Thomas.
- "I knew you were going to ask that." I say. "We don't know, but last night when you killed that griever, section 7 was open. So, it's probably where it comes from. Tomorrow, the three of us are going to take a closer look."
Thomas nods.
- "No." Minho says. "You're not going in there y/n."
I look at him and my eyes double.
- "Really? Cause I don't remember you ever going in the maze without your right hand woman. And uh...besides didn't you tell me yesterday that you always needed me?"
Clint and Jeff run towards the cabin. Minho and I step in front of the map trying to hide it.
- "Hey!" Screams Minho. "What are you guys doing? You know you're not allowed in here."
- "Sorry." Says Jeff, breathing loudly. "It's the girl."
- "She awake?" Asks Thomas.
Clint and Jeff look at each other.
- "You can say that." Clint says.
I walk out of the cabin and start running to the glade. The guys are behind me. We run to the glade and I see the guys are holding things above their heads. It seems as if they are trying to protect themselves. I see Chuck.
- "Chuck what's going on?" Asks Thomas.
We all slow down.
- "Girls are awesome." Answers Chuck, pointing to the tower.
I run towards the tower, and notice that the guys are in fact protecting themselves. The girl is throwing things at them from the top. I instantly smile. This girl is a real badass.
- "Leave me alone!" She screams.
- "Throw one more of those things," Screams Gally, "And...AAAAAH!"
He bends down trying to protect himself. I laugh and look at Newt.
- "I don't think she likes us very much." Says Newt.
- "I understand her." I say.
The guys all turn to me and stare at me in silence. They instantly protect themselves again because she continues on throwing rocks at us.
- "What do you want?" She screams.
- "We just want to talk!" Says Thomas.
- "I'm warning you!"
She continues on throwing rocks at us.
- "Hey! Hey! It's Thomas!"
She stops.
- "It's Thomas."
She looks down at us. Thomas waves.
- "I'm going to come up ok?"
She disappears.
- "Just me, for now. Y/n."
- "Yeah?"
- "I might need you later."
I nod and Thomas walks to the ladder and climbs it.
- "You're seriously not saying anything?" Gally says to me.
- "What do you mean?"
- "Don't you see he's trying to plot against us with her?"
- "For once in your life can you please just trust him?"
Gally looks at me in silence.
- "Gally...you should know this better than anyone, but Thomas is like me. We have the same ideas, the same curiosity and the same hunger to run. And look at you and I now, you're one of my closest friends, but sometimes, you need to chill. If you don't trust Thomas personally, then trust me."
Gally doesn't say anything. We cant hear if Thomas and the girl are talking or not, but I know they are.
- "Whats going on up there?" Asks Gally.
- "Gally!" I say.
I look at him and mouth the word 'seriously'. Thomas stands up and goes to the edge.
- "Is she coming down?" Asks Newt.
- "Um..." Says Thomas. He looks away and then looks back at us. "Give us a second ok?"
The guys, especially Gally, look annoyed.
- "Y/n?" Says Thomas.
- "Yeah."
The guys turn back around.
- "Hey, no you guys go." I say.
- "Can you stay close? I might ask you to come up here soon."
- "Yeah. Of course."
The guys leave except for Minho. I look at the tower.
- "What are you thinking?"
- "Honestly, I don't think you're gonna like what I'm thinking." I answer.
- "You think he recognized her, don't you."
I don't answer. He takes a breath and puts his hand on my shoulder and walks away. I lay on the grass and look up at the sky. I don't know why but I feel jealous about the girl. I don't even know her and yet she has a toll on me because she is with Thomas. I also think about how she knows me. I don't remember meeting her. She's not in any memories of Thomas and I, but the same feeling I had with Newt, I have with her. I know I remember her from somewhere but I cant remember.
- "Y/N!!" Thomas yells.
I quickly get up. He goes down the ladder as fast as possible, the girl following right behind him. When he's on the ground, he runs towards me. He shows me these two things with blue liquid in them
- "Whats this?" I ask.
- "I don't know." He says. "But they came in her pocket."
I look down and see the letters W.C.K.D.
- "Alby." I say.
Thomas nods.
- "I'll get Newt. Go to the MedJack cabin." I say.
He nods.They run towards the MedJack cabin and I run towards the tents. I know that's where Newt is. I see Chuck.
- "Chuck!"
He turns around.
- "Have you seen Newt?"
- "Yeah. He is at the tents next to his bed."
I smile. I knew it.
- "Thank you!" I am about to run away from him, but then turn around. "Oh I was thinking. Can you help me get some food for Thomas tonight? You know...under the raid-r?"
He nods. I run away and see Newt.
- "Newt!"
I run to him.
- "You need to come with me now."
We run to the MedJack cabin and enter.
- "What is the meaning of this?" Asks Newt.
- "Here." Says Thomas.
He gives him one of the seringues.
- "What is this?"
- "A seringue. That could help Alby. It came up with Teresa."
I lean into Teresa.
- "I like your name by the way."
She looks at me and smiles.
- "Thanks."
- "Newt its the only option."
- "No. We don't know what it is. Why it came up here with you. I mean for all we know this thing  could kill him."
- "Here's already dying."
I look at Alby and my heart shatters. He is definitely in a worse state than he was the last time I saw him.
- "Look at him." Continues Thomas. "How could this possibly make it any worse? Come on. It's worth the try."
- "Alright." He turns to Thomas. "Do it."
He gives back the seringue to Thomas. Thomas walks up next to Alby. He leans over him and seems hesitant. He turns his head to look at me.
- "You got this." I say.
We both smile. Alby suddenly gets up and grabs Thomas by his shirt.
- "YOU SHOULDN'T BE HERE." Says Alby. "Shouldn't be here!!"
Alby starts on choking Thomas.
- "THOMAS!" I yell.
Clint and Jeff hold Alby down and Newt tries to help Thomas.
- "Get the seringue!" Says Thomas.
Teresa grabs it and stabs it into Alby's chest. He immediately calms down. We all step back.
- "Well...that worked." Says Jeff.
We're all breathing very loudly, still a bit terrified.
- "From now on, someone stays here and watches him around the clock." Orders Newt.
We all nod. Gally comes in.
- "Hey." Gally says. "Sundown greenie. Time to go."
I look at Thomas. He follows Gally and they walk outside.
- "Come on." I say. "Let's go grab some food."
I walk outside and Teresa follows me.
- "I'm y/n by the way. And if you hadn't noticed, the only girl in here before you."
She chuckles.
- "Yeah. I noticed. You're quite brave to have lived with them."
- "You get used to it."
We get to Fry's kitchen and Chuck is there too.
- "Evening boys!" I say. "Everyone, meet Teresa." I say smiling. "Now all of you dip shits cant make jokes about me being the only girl."
I grab a piece of bacon and eat it.
- "Hey!" Fry says.
- "Teresa. Meet Frypan and Chuck."
They both wave.
- "Hi! I made your bed next to mine already. I saw you were quite busy so I installed you already. I hope that's ok."
Teresa smiles.
- "Why thank you! That's very nice of you!"
- "Hey Fry." I say.
- "Yeah?"
- "Can we grab some food please?"
- "Yes. Because you're asking."
I roll my eyes.
- "I saw that." Says Fry.
I grab some food and so does Teresa. Every now and then I put some stuff in my pants. I look at Chuck and he's doing the same.
- "Teresa." Says Chuck. "Follow me. I'll show you where we're staying."
She nods.
- "Night." I say.
