Chapter 13 - The Truth

I stay up all night not able to fall asleep. At first, I walked around in the glade and at some point laid down to look up at the stars. Every inch of my body was waiting for Newt to join me, but he never did. I couldn't fall asleep. I was only thinking of Thomas and wondering if he would be alright. The sun starts to rise.
- "What are you doing there?"
I turn around and see Newt. I quickly get up.
- "I...uh..."
- "You stayed up all night didn't you?"
- "I couldn't sleep..."
- "Don't worry. The same thing happened to me. Are you alright though? You left quite abruptly last night..."
- "Yeah im fine."
He looks at me and then at the pit.
- "Follow me."
- "What?" I ask.
He walks away in direction of the pit and I follow him. Chuck and Minho and squatting. Newt and I squat next to them. Teresa and Thomas are in the pit. Thomas is on her, laying down.
- "He still hasn't woken up?" I ask.
- "No." She answers.
I look at her and start panting. Newt put his hand on my leg.
- "Hey. He's going to wake up." Newt says.
Suddenly, he twitches a bit.
- "Hey." Teresa says. "Are you ok?"
- "Thomas!" I say, relieved of seeing him awake.
I thought I was going to lose him.
- "What the hell were you thinking?" Says Chuck.
He gets up and turns to us. He looks confused.
- "What happened?" Asks Thomas.
- "Gally has taken control." Says Newt. "He said we had a choice. Either join him or get banished at sundown with you."
I turn to Newt.
- "I'm sorry what?" I say. "Why the hell didn't I know this?"
The guys look at me.
- "Let's just say, last night you weren't in the best mindset. This information would just of made it worse." Says Minho.
I look at the ground and remember what I did last night.
- "What happened?" Asks Thomas.
- "It's not important." I answer.
He looks at me and takes a breath.
- "Going back to the Gally situation." Says Thomas. "The others agreed to that?"
- "Gally has everyone convinced that you're the reason all this has happened." Answers Teresa.
- "Well, he's been right so far."
I look at him in confusion. Does he remember?
- "What are you talking about?" Says Minho.
- "This place...its not what we thought it was. It's not a prison, but a test."
Minho and I look at each other. Thomas does remember...
- "It all started when we were kids." Continues Thomas. "They would give us these challenges. They were experimenting on us. And then people started disappearing. Every month, one after the other, like clockwork."
- "They we're sending them up into the maze." Says Newt and I.
I wipe a few tears off my face. My heart tightens at the idea of Thomas remembering us.
- "Yeah, but not all of us." Thomas says.
- "What do you mean?" Asks Newt and I.
Thomas looks at us in silence. He takes a breath.
- "Guys, I'm one of them."
I lean back almost falling balance. Alby was right, which means I was one of them too.
- "The people who put you here, I worked with them. I watched you guys for years."
I look at Minho and Newt and they seem completely broken.
- "The entire time you have been here...I was on the other side of it." Thomas says. He looks at Teresa. "And my sister."
- "Sister?" Asks Teresa.
- "Yeah..." Thomas chuckles. "We're siblings."
I let out a breath, relived that nothing more was going on between them. Teresa has tears in her eyes.
- "I don't understand. What do you mean we were with them?" Teresa says.
I could tell she is in pain.
- "Teresa...we did this to them."
Teresa shakes her head.
- "No. That cant be true."
I turn to Newt and he looks away.
- "It is. I saw it."
- "Why would they send us up if we were with them?" Asks Teresa.
- "It doesn't matter."
- "Hes right." Says Newt. "It doesn't matter. Any of it. Because the people we were before the maze don't even exist anymore."
I look at Newt and smile.
- "These Creators took care of that." Continues Newt. "But what does matter is who we are now, and what we do right now. You went into the maze and you found a way out!"
- "Yeah, but if i hadn't, Alby would still be alive."
Newt takes a deep breath.
- "Maybe...but i know that if he were here, he would be telling you the exact same thing."
- "And you can count on me for thinking the exact same thing." I say.
- "Pick your ass up and finish what you started." Says Newt. "Because if we do nothing, then that means Alby died for nothing and I cant have that."
- "Ok." Says Thomas. "But before anything else...there's something more."
- "Whats that?" Asks Minho.
Thomas looks at me straight in the eyes.
- "Y/n..." Thomas says. "You...you were one of them too."
My heart stops beating. I look at the guys and a few tears roll down on the side of my cheeks. How could I do this to them?
- "But not really." Continues Thomas.
- "What?" I ask.
Newt looks at me and takes my hand.
- "You were always one of the smartest and they liked that but..."
- "But?"
I start panting.
- "But you broke the rules. You never agreed to what they were doing. You were tormented. You didn't know what to do nor think. Your best friend, Teresa was there working with you by your side everyday, but..." He looks at Newt. "Your twin brother was placed in the maze."
Newt and I look at each other in shock.
- "I'm sorry what?" Newt and I both say.
I don't know why but my body is filled with happiness. Not only is Newt one of my best friends he's also my twin brother.
- "Yeah. That's why both of you guys always say the same random things all the time. It's not because you guys are close, but because you guys are twins. And that broke y/n... So, one day, you decided to do something, and I helped. They discovered it and you completely took the blame and made a deal with them...you would go into the maze in order for them to experiment on you, but they would have to protect Teresa and I."
- "Yeah, well they definitely held their end of the deal." I say sarcastically.
- "So were really twins?" Asks Newt. "We don't even look nor sound alike."
We all laugh. I immediately stop, thinking of Thomas and I's relationship.
- "Thomas? Is there...you know...um...anything else you remember."
He stares at me.
- "No. Nothing else."
He immediately looks on the ground and my heart shatters into a million pieces. How is this possible? He remembers Newt and I being siblings but not us. I let go of Newt's hand and completely sit on the ground. I look away in order to not cry.
- "So about this situation." Says Minho. "What do we do?"
- "We got to get through Gally." Says Thomas. "And I think I've got a plan."
I turn back around and take a deep breath. Newt mouths to me 'are you alright?'. I don't answer and I briefly look at Thomas and immediately look away when I realize he is looking at me.
- "Whats the plan?" Asks Chuck.
Thomas goes into detail on what exactly we are doing. I listen but not really since all I can think about are the memories. They keep replaying in my mind and every time they just keep getting more real...
- "Alright, that sounds good." Says Minho.
I snap back into reality.
- "Yeah I agree." Says Newt.
- "Were done here?" I say.
- "Um..." Newt says.
I get up as quickly as possible and walk away.
- "Y/N!" Minho screams.
I continue on walking away, disregarding him.
