"Sydney, I know this is an awkward situation but you HAVE to do the competition!" Naomi tried to talk some sense into me at the bakery. "You said so yourself, the opportunities it will present if you win...but that means you HAVE to work with Lucas!"

"UGH! Why do I feel like this, Naomi! I knew it! I KNEW about the Sophie and Abigail! WHY did I get myself involved?" This time shoving an entire chocolate petit four cake in my mouth as I kept ranting and raving, not even sounding audible with my mouth stuffed.

"Everything you told me about him sounded really sweet and genuine. I don't know. Maybe it's not what you think?" Naomi replied, again giving him the benefit of the doubt as my eyes darted over to hers in shock Naomi is still somehow defending his actions.

"Are you serious?" I questioned her audacity while her eyes looked focused elsewhere.

"Well, you're about to find out right now," gesturing with her eyes behind me and I turned around to see none other than Lucas about to make his entrance into my shop.

"UGH!" I let out my frustrations just before I heard the door chime.

"Just remember you HAVE to do the competition!" Naomi whispered before he came over to me.

"Syd," having the nerve to give me a nickname, I shot daggers at him with my eyes and he instantly knew to take that back as he cleared his throat.

"Sydney, can we talk?" Lucas asked like a dog in trouble.

"Outside!" I subtly barked at him so I wouldn't draw a scene in my perfectly posh store.

We made our way to the curb outside and I was already fuming not even wanting to hear his explanation.

"Look, I heard you talking to Sophie, ok! I've seen the Sophie and Abigail texts when I had your phone! If calling yourself single as they come gets you laid then whatever, but I know it's a pack of lies!"

"Syd-"

"DON'T!" I shouted at him.

"I'm NOT your girl! You don't get to call me the cutesy nicknames! I told you I didn't want to get my heart broken and that I came from a broken family so how dare you put me in that position! I don't know if you're married or just a cheater but I am NOT going to be that other woman!"

"Sydney! Please listen! It's not what you think!"

"No! I don't care! I HAVE to work with you for the competition but that's it!"

"Sydney!" he kept begging and pleading.

"There's nothing else to talk about, Lucas!"

I left him on the street and walked back into my bakery.

A few days passed with texts from Lucas either pleading with me to let him explain or asking about when we are going to practice for the competition. I wanted to continue to ignore him but Naomi was about ready to smack me in the face lecturing me on how "I'm not normally affected like this by a man!" or how "I'm usually focused on my work and nothing else!"

Since she had a point about my business, I couldn't ignore him any longer, for the competition's sake and chance of winning. So finally I dragged my ass down to his shop on a Friday afternoon, unannounced to talk to him about scheduling some times from now until the competition. I was purely in business mode and didn't want to discuss what happened between us anymore.

"Hi, what can I get for you today?" a pleasant young employee asked as I walked up to the counter.

"Umm, actually I was hoping to speak to Lucas...is he here?"
