"WHAT!" They both shouted in sync with their mouths dropped to the floor. "How have you NEVER gone sledding before?" Lucas questioned my comment, making me sound insane.
"I grew up in Tulsa! I never even saw snow before I moved to Paris for school and I was working so I never went sledding," I explained but Lucas kept shaking his head in disbelief.
"Nope! Nope! Nope! You haven't lived until you've gone sledding."
"And ice skating!" Sophie chimed in.
"I've never gone ice skating either," I shyly admitted my second confession that I knew they wouldn't like.
"Get your coat on! You're coming with us! You have no choice!" Lucas said, holding my coat up so I can slip my arms in.
"You're involving your daughter in a hostage situation?" I said with sass.
"You fed her chocolate for breakfast so she's bound to do something illegal today anyways," he retorted, making me throw my head back bursting out laughing.
"Soph! You ready?" Lucas called out and we heard the sound of snow pants scratching together every step she took coming down the hallway.
"I can't put my arms down!" she cried overly dramatically.
"Classic," Lucas just stood there laughing while I was shocked and confused why he wasn't helping her.
"From the movie...A Christmas Story?" he explained waiting for my response.
"Oh..it's a movie?" I questioned, dumbfounded. "I haven't seen it."
"You haven't seen A Christmas Story? Boy, there's a lot to catch you up on. You might have to be held hostage all winter long."
We all piled in his snow-covered jeep wrangler and drove just outside of the city until we parked along the side of the road next to an open field with a giant hill. About a dozen people had the same idea and they were trucking up the hill with their snow tubes and sleds and sliding back down.
"Oh boy, I think I'm too old for this," I used every excuse in the book only to get laughed at by both of them.
"Aww, you look good for your age then, grandma!" Lucas teased.
"Thanks, Lulu!" I teased back.
"But seriously, that's a huge hill! We're going to kill ourselves!" I said walking up to it getting a closer view of how high up it goes.
"No, we're not! Soph has been sledding this hill since she was three and I will brag as a dad who did it all on his own and had no clue what he was doing, she's never broken a bone in her life...yet!" He threw on a childish grin and I knew there was no avoiding this.
"Soph! Wanna show Sydney how the pros do it?"
"YEAH!" She shouts and Lucas turns back to me with a smile.
"When we come down, you're next! I'll go with you"
I watch them trudge through the snow up the hill as Lucas holds the snow tube and Sophie's hand so she doesn't lose her balance as the snow climbed all the way up to her shins. When they reached the top they both wave down to me like two children before they sit down, Sophie in front and Lucas behind her, and slowly push the tub to the edge until it falls down the hill. Reaching full speed I hear Sophie's screaming giggles and I couldn't help but laugh until they slowed down at the bottom of the hill doing circles like a teacup carnival ride.
"Yaaaay! That was SOO fun!"
"Alright grandma, your turn!" Lucas turned to me, extending his hand for me to take.
"Oh, God! Here goes nothing! Sophie, will you take my place in the competition when I'm stuck in the hospital?" I asked as dramatically as possible, causing her to laugh.
"Ok!"
Lucas and I walk up the hill together inconspicuously holding hands and he draws circles on my inner wrist with his thumb while the rest of our fingers intertwine, playing with each other just enjoying the comforts of our touch. Every so often he'd look back down the hill like a good dad should to make sure Sophie stayed where she was told was out of harm's way. We reached the top and waved down at her like silly kids and she waved back doing a cheerful dance. Lucas sat down first and I took his hand as I sat in front of him. He pushed my hair to the side and peppered my neck with kisses, sending a shiver up my spine.
"You ready?" He wrapped his arms around me and hugged me tightly.
With the nod of my head, he pushed off the edge and the crisp wind was whipping at my face. I shrieked like a little girl to every subtle bump in the snow and really screamed when the gust of wind started spinning us around in circles the rest of the way down.
"Oh shit! We're gonna hit a jump! Hold on tight!" Lucas shouted in my ear and I gripped his arm for dear life and screamed at the top of my lungs as we flew through the air.
Landing rough on the edge of the snow tube, our weight flipped us off and into a powdery snow dune.
"Syd! Are you ok!" He rolled over instantly and pried my hands off my face to see my squinting eyes in tears.
"I'm sorry, are you hurt!" I couldn't speak, I wasn't able to catch my breath and the ache in my stomach was too much bare from the uncontrollable laughter. I could only shake my head no before finally gasping for air and letting out more laughter.
"Oh my God! We almost died but that was the most fun I've ever had!" I kept on laughing and he finally took a sigh of relief and laughed along with me.
"Ahh, my back!" He arched and fell back in the snow like he was in pain and that abruptly stopped my laughter.
"I think I landed on a rock!" he cried out and I lifted myself up and hovered over his body.
"Oh God! Are you ok? Can you move?" I asked, concerned.
"I don't know, let me see." He reached for my face and pulled me down crashing my lips onto his like he's been starved just as I have for him. "I've wanted to do that all fucking day!" he said only breaking for air before diving in again. He rolled us around in the snow deepening the kiss before we had to pry our lips from each other hearing Sophie's voice getting closer.
"THAT WAS THE COOLEST WIPEOUT I'VE EVER SEEN!" Sophie shouted on the top of her lungs in excitement as she ran over to us.
"I knew your dad was trying to kill me!" I said teasingly.
"How was I supposed to know there was a jump in the middle of the lane?" He pulled himself up from the snow dusting himself off before helping me up.
"Yeah, yeah! I think it's payback time!" I say forming a snowball and throwing it at his face.
"You? You're inexperienced with the snow and you want to start a snowball fight? Now this, I can beat you at!" he taunted, bending down and forming his own snowballs.
"Not when it's girls against guys! Right, Sophie? Let's get him!" I say and she was quick to form her own and we both threw them at the same time, plowing him right in the chest and neck.
He tries to keep up with throwing his snowballs at us but we hit him with more every time.
"Ahh! Ok! Ok! I'm outnumbered with you two!" Lucas shouted just as we both whacked him again.
"Oh, you love us!" giggling along with Sophie as he grabbed us each at the waist and pulled us in for a hug. Sophie squirmed free but I gave in getting lost in his eyes that seemed to tell me something as he quietly smiled back at me.
"Y-you have snow on your eyelashes," he whispered cupping my face but that wasn't what I thought he wanted to say. Just as Lucas was ready to speak again, Sophie plowed him directly in the face with a snowball and I burst out laughing.
"Yup, now you do too!" I said referring to the snowflakes that dusted his thick messy-blonde lashes.
"Are you ready to go skating next?" he asked playfully and I smiled and nodded back with a glisten in my eye that said, "I'm ready for anything with him!"
