"PJ's are on! Did you brush your teeth?" Lucas asked.
"Yes!"
"Ok then," Lucas had us in a huddle over the kitchen table speaking in a tone you'd imagine the football coaches to have when in game mode. "We have thirty minutes until it's bedtime! That means, in thirty minutes we have to construct and decorate each of these gingerbread houses! Whoever finishes first, wins!"
He looks at me with a deadly smirk before looking back at Sophie. "Soph, you're the judge, you list your requirements."
"Lots of color and candy!" she answered excitedly. "And gumdrops are my favorite if you want to be on the judge's good side!" she whispered loudly to me and I couldn't contain a laugh.
"You two better not be in cahoots against me!" Lucas accused us with a pointer finger. "And the most important rule, Sophie?"
"No matter what, have fun doing it!" She replied like it was one of their golden family rules and it warmed my heart.
"That's right! Is the judge ready?" Lucas asked and she nodded with a smile.
"On your mark!" doing an excited cheer. "Get set! GO!"
Lucas and I were off, each grabbing a knife full of thick frosting as glue to piece together the walls of the house. Before I added the roof, I got to work grabbing my piping bag of icing and started my detailed work of outlining the windows and doors, trying to choose candies that looked somewhat decent as colorful decorations that Sophie wanted. I stuck with the pattern of red and green m&m's around each window and door before I looked up at Lucas who had fully assembled his walls and roof.
Distraction was my second tactic that I hoped would keep me in the lead. Just as Lucas was about to grab his piping bag, I took my finger and poked at his roof until all four walls collapsed.
"HEY! That's not fair!" he whined and Sophie burst out laughing in the most adorable childish full bellied laugh that caused us all to laugh until we had tears in our eyes.
"Alright then! You want to play dirty!" Lucas grabbed his piping bag and squeezed hard so icing poured out like a funnel all over my roof. I know he was expecting me to squeal at the disastrous mess he made and I know he'd be even more flustered if I didn't react that way.
"Oh thank you! You're helping me finish first!" I said all calm and confident.
"Wh-what! You're not freaking out at the mess!"
"Nope! I guess I'm a changed person!" I said calmly, smoothing the frosting out over the entire roof before lining it with gumdrops in a multi-colored pattern and more red and green m&m's. I felt his eyes stare at me for a minute as I kept focused on my work and eventually he went back to quickly putting his house back together.
"Oh, by the way! I have a question!" I said working on my second form of distraction but also I've been extremely curious to know the answer for a while.
