Natalia's P.O.V
---------
...
I was awake before I reached the past.
Rose however, wasn't.
I couldn't really see where we were, or where we were going to land, because everything was blurring by at a fast pace.
The sound of people talking reached my ears.
'Uh oh.' I thought. Just our luck, landing in a populated area.
My surroundings cleared, and we landed with a hard thump on a dry sort of road or walkway place.
A sharp pain shot up my leg, and I gritted my teeth.
There were people, Vikings in fact, walking around us, paying no mind to the two strangely dressed humans sitting in the middle of the street.
'Most likely Cuz they can't see us over their huge bellies,' I thought meanly. 'They really could do with a little less feeding.'
Rose was still knocked out cold. She'd probably be that way for a while too, judging by how long my mom had stayed knocked out.
I stood up at the loud roar of a Dragon. The Vikings cheered and yelled something like...chief?
A black shadow blocked the sun temporarily, and a large black Dragon landed in the clearing with a man on his back.
The boy jumped off, quite lithely, and was very small compared to the other Vikings that were scattered around the town square.
The boy ran into what seemed to be the black smith shop, and his dragon started wandering off. Most likely the boy was going to stay for a while.
I tried to stand up, only to fall back down with a sharp pain throbbing in my leg.
Wow.
I'm just the bad luck collector, aren't I?
My ankle was probably sprained at the least.
I prodded it with my fingers, until I found the spot that it hurt the most. I cried out with pain, causing the large black dragon to swing his head towards me at the sound.
Suddenly, I felt like an idiot. That black Dragon was Toothless!
Toothless ran over quickly from across the square. A few Vikings glanced over curiously, then went about their business.
"Natalia!" Toothless exclaimed. "You're back! Who's that with you? Are you hurt?"
I laughed and patted him on the head. "It's nice to see you again Toothless." I said. "This is my best friend, Rose. We actually traveled here by accident. My mom's going to kill me."
"Sounds fun," he commented.
"Always is," I replied, smiling.
I tried to stand up again, then winced.
Nope.
I wouldn't be walking anywhere anytime soon. Toothless noticed my wince. "You need to go to Gothi's," he said. "that ankle doesn't look good."
"What the heck is a Gothi?" I grumbled, but stood up anyways.
"Not what, who," he said. "Gothi is our town healer, among other things. You can put your friend Rose on my back, then she can rest at Gothi's while you get a bandage for that leg." Toothless said. I nodded tiredly, then strained to put Rose on his back.
Slowly, we walked up a long hill to a small cottage with a cot and a few shelves filled with jars of...I didn't want to know.
And also an old lady.
And when I say old, I meant OLD.
This was one small lady. Who apparently didn't speak either.
She stared at me for a minute, then motioned to put Rose on the cot, and for me to follow her.
After I safely put Rose down, I followed Gothi, who put some gross potion or whatnot on my ankle, then bound it with strips of some yellowed cloth.
After, Gothi left to gather herbs or something, and I was left alone in the cottage with a sleeping Rose, and Toothless.
"So, what happened to the search for your father?" Toothless asked.
I sighed.
"I haven't even started yet. Too much has gotten in the way."
Toothless frowned.
"That's unfortunate." he remarked.
"Yeah."
We were silent for a moment.
I jumped when Toothless suddenly spoke.
"I could help you."
I looked at him, surprised.
"Not that I don't really appreciate the offer," I said. "but don't you have lots of stuff to do here?"
Toothless shook his head.
"My rider, Hiccup, has to go to this big chief get together to work out alliances, tactical strategies, that sort of thing. His mother is taking over as temporary chief while he's gone, and I'm on my own for now. I've got some free time."
I smiled.
"I'd like that." I said in a thankful tone.
Then he frowned in thought.
"What if I see him, but don't realize it's him?" he asked. "I mean, I have no idea what he looks like."
"He has the same whitish blonde hair that I do," I said.
"except his eyes are a dark brown, not light green."
"Odd hair colour," Toothless remarked.
"Thanks," I replied sarcastically.
Toothless grinned a toothless grin.
"What's his name?" he asked.
"Desmond Cowell."
Toothless froze.
Like, a deathly still.
Then he jerked back like I had stung him on the nose.
"What's wrong?" I inquired.
"His name is Desmond Cowell?" Toothless asked seriously.
I nodded slowly as if admitting it was wrong.
Toothless started prowling around the room in an agitated manner, making me quite nervous.
"I don't understand," I said. "do you know my father?"
Toothless glanced at me uneasily, obviously thinking on what to say.
"It's not my place to tell you." he said finally.
"So he's in this timeline??" I asked incredulously.
Toothless nodded his head at me hesitantly.
I stared at him in shock.
"You have to tell me!" I demanded.
Toothless shook his head at me.
I groaned in frustration.
"I'm going to take a walk." I stated,
then walked outside, only to solidly bump into someone.
I looked up, only to see clear green eyes gazing back at me, looking slightly perplexed.
It was the boy from earlier, that had been riding Toothless.
Hiccup.
I felt my heartbeat rising as I started to panic.
"Toothless!"
I called out in Dragonese, causing the Hiccup to stare at me in shock.
Toothless quickly ran out the door, no doubt because of my tone of voice.
Seeing Hiccup, he relaxed.
"Hey Hiccup!"
Toothless said happily as he ran up to lick the boy's face.
Hiccup finally found his voice.
"Who is that Toothless? And did she speak your name in Dragonese???" he asked.
There was a strange lilt to his voice.
"That's Natalia." Toothless said nonchalantly.
Toothless turned to me. "Natalia, this is my rider and best friend, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the 3."
"Long name," I commented, finally regaining my confidence.
"My name is Natalia Cowe- Sorry, Natalia Cowell."
I switched to English halfway through. Sometimes I slipped into Dragonese without realizing it.
I held out my hand which he took slowly.
"How is it that you know Dragonese?" Hiccup asked.
"My mom and my Dad." I stated. "My mom's into Dragons...alot."
"Sounds kinda like my mom." He said offhandedly. "Except, she can't speak Dragonese, nor anyone else around here. It's just me. Well, my girlfriend Astrid knows a bit, but only a few words-Hey! That gives me a great idea..." he trailed off.
Toothless rolled his eyes.
"And there he goes again." he deadpanned.
I watched rather amused, as Hiccup pulled out a notebook and started scribbling on it, seeming to forget we were even here.
Just then, the creaking of a hinge caused me to turn around, only to see Rose walking carefully out the small door.
I walked over to her. "Glad to see you back with the living." I said, smiling.
She frowned at me and didn't say anything.
"What?" I asked.
She stared at me.
"Seriously, what?" I asked again, getting kinda freaked out. Maybe she wasn't taking this time travel thing that well.
But no, I should have known that wasn't it.
Rose held up a sad little broken Candy Cane in my face.
"Why'd you lie me on my left side??" She complained. "You broke my Candy Cane!"
"What? How was I supposed to know you keep sad little candies in your left pocket?" I asked defensively.
Rose opened her mouth to respond, then snapped it shut, looking confused. "Touché," she said.
I shook my head and laughed.
"So this is the past Huh?" she asked.
"Yup,"
Rose glanced around.
"It's, different."
I shrugged.
She looked over at Hiccup and Toothless.
Toothless was nudging him, trying to get his attention while Hiccup continued to scribble in his notebook.
Toothless finally resorted to licking Hiccup all over his face, causing Hiccup to complain while laughing.
"Who are they?" Rose asked in shock while gazing mostly at Toothless.
"That's Toothless," I said, pointing at the black Dragon.
"Oh, he's that Dragon you mentioned."
Rose commented.
"Yup," I replied.
Then I gestured at Hiccup.
"That's Hiccup, Toothless's rider. I don't know him. We met just a few moments ago."
"Can I meet Toothless?" Rose asked, her face filled with excitement.
Not really a surprise. I mean, Toothless was a reptile, a sort of animal.
I nodded.
We then walked over to where Hiccup and Toothless were wrestling for his notebook while laughing.
They turned their attention to us as we approached.
"This is my best friend, Rose." I said in Dragonese.
Hiccup smiled. "Nice to meet you." he said, holding his hand out to shake.
Rose shook it briefly.
Toothless walked forward.
"Nice to meet you Rose." he said.
Rose's head cocked to the side in confusion.
"What did he say," she whisper yelled at me.
"He said 'nice to meet you'," I whispered back.
Rose repeated the sounds to herself for a moment before repeating them back to Toothless.
Toothless grinned, while Hiccup shook his head in astonishment.
"How is it that you two can emulate the sounds of Dragonese so easily?" he asked.
Rose and I shrugged.
"I don't know Dragonese yet," Rose said. "I'm just starting to learn."
"I've known it since my dad taught it to me when I was eight." I said.
"My mom translated the entire language into English, and my dad and I spoke it to each other until we memorized it."
I thought for a second.
"Maybe it's because of your accents," I said to Hiccup.
"You're one of the only ones around here that doesn't have an accent, and maybe it makes it easier for you to speak Dragonese."
Hiccup frowned.
"But you have an accent," he pointed out.
I nodded.
"Yeah, and it took the longest time for me to learn Dragonese."
"Maybe the people from where we are could speak Dragonese better, because nobody has an accent in the futur-"
Rose jabbed me in the ribs and I cut myself off.
I'm such an idiot.
I just about gave up that we time traveled.
Hiccup was looking at us kinda funny.
"Where did you say you were from again?" He asked.
Rose and I exchanged a glance.
"Um, we're really far from home-" Rose managed.
"Yeah, and we don't know how to get back." I finished.
Not a lie.
I had managed to time travel here, but I didn't have enough energy to return right then.
I had recently discovered that it was connected with how much I slept.
If I was lacking in sleep, I couldn't travel, and if I tried, I would end up like I was when Toothless made me prove that I was a time traveler.
Hiccup nodded sympathetically while Toothless smirked at me.
"Well, if you want, you can come to my house, we'll have dinner, then we can figure out where you came from." Hiccup offered.
"Yes please," I said. "No offense, but Gothi's hut is not comfy."
Rose nodded in whole hearted agreement.
Hiccup laughed. "I know the feeling." I agreed.
We walked to his house, which was sitting on a small hill.
A giant Stormcutter Dragon lay in front of it.
I was startled that I knew that.
Suddenly, I realized I knew a whole lot more about Dragons than I first thought.
My mom had talked about them so often, I must have picked up on all the facts subconsciously.
"That's a Stormcutter," I said to Rose, pointing at the large Dragon.
Rose glanced at the Dragon.
"Oh, he must be that big Dragon with the double wings that your mom talks about." she responded.
"Yeah."
We walked up to pass the Dragon, and I stepped in front of it, and slowly held out my hand, while turning my head away.
Not but a moment later, I was rewarded with a big warm Dragon nose on my hand.
I looked up at it and smiled.
"You are a fine Dragon indeed," I said to him in Dragonese. "what is your name?"
The Stormcutter jerked back in surprise, then smiled kindly.
"You are like my rider's son," he said. "a Dragon whisperer."
I nodded.
"My name is Cloudjumper," he said.
"You?"
"Natalia Cowell."
"Intriguing name," he said.
Then he looked at Rose.
"And who is your companion?" He inquired.
"That's my best friend, Rose Fitch." I said.
Rose was smiling at Cloudjumper.
She then repeated the words of 'nice to meet you' to him in Dragonese.
"Another one," Cloudjumper said in surprise.
I laughed at the look on his face.
"No, she is just learning." I said.
Hiccup was watching in some surprise as Rose and I interacted with Cloudjumper.
"You should come inside and meet my rider," Cloudjumper said. "I'm sure she'd be thrilled to meet you."
Hiccup stepped forward.
"We were just going in Cloudjumper," Hiccup said finally.
"we're trying to find out how to get these two home."
he gestured to us.
Cloudjumper nodded understandingly.
"We should hasten our pace then," he said.
"it is not a nice feeling to be unable to find your home."
We walked into the house while I quietly repeated the entire conversation to Rose.
She repeated the sounds of Dragonese to herself until she had memorized all the sounds we had used in the conversation.
Rose was picking up Dragonese at a shocking rate.
As we walked in, a pretty middle aged woman with long braids and a staff walked down the stairs to greet her son.
Hiccup ran to hug her.
"Hey mom," he said.
Valka smiled widely at her son.
"You'll never believe what I've figured out Hiccup! Oh, it's incredibl-"
"Mom, we have guests." Hiccup said, gesturing over to Rose and I.
Hiccup's mother walked over to us, scanning us with interest.
"Hello," she said, extending her small hand for us to shake.
"I am Hiccup's mother, Valka."
We smiled at her.
"It's nice to meet you Ms. Haddock," I said. "I'm Natalia Cowell."
Rose then shook her hand. "And I'm Rose Fitch," she added.
"Well," Valka said. "no need for formality, call me Valka."
"Thank you Valka." I said.
Hiccup then spoke.
"Mom," he said. "they are looking for a way back home. They're lost."
Valka look at us sympathetically, and I winced.
Technically, I wasn't lying, I couldn't get us home right now because I was too tired.
But it still felt like a lie, and Valka seemed too nice to trick.
So did Hiccup actually.
The only thing that made me feel better was that Toothless knew what was really happening.
I came back out of my thoughts to see Rose and Valka talking like old friends, and Hiccup laughing at what they were saying.
I walked up to them.
"Your friend is quite funny," Valka said, smiling at me.
"Wha'd she say?" I asked as Rose grinned at me.
"I was talking about the time we decided to ride those sheep on the farm we visited," she said, barely holding in her laughter.
I burst into laughter as I recalled what happened.(Flashback)
We were walking with the class on a field trip to the local farm.
Rose and I were only ten.
Talking quietly, Rose and I didn't realize we had drifted off from the class.
When we looked up, we found ourselves next to the sheep pen.
Rose nudged me with a mischievous look on her face.
"Hey, hey Nat," she said.
"I dare you to a race."
I smiled.
"Sweet. Okay." I agreed.
Rose held up her index finger.
"BUT, there is a catch."
She said.
"We have to ride those sheep, just there."
I looked back and forth between the sheep and Rose, until an equally mischievous grin spread across face.
"Your on," I said.
Next thing you know, Rose and I were desperately clinging to some panicking sheep as they raced right towards the class, farmers, and teachers.
The class watched in shock as Rose and I tore by them, screaming at the top of our lungs.
"Stop screaming, you'll catch flies!!" I screamed at Rose.
"Shut up!" She screamed back. "I can't concentrate! Do you want me to fall off?!?!"
"This was your idea!" I screamed.
"You agreed!!" She screamed back again.
Finally, after nearly two hours, the farmers managed to catch our Sheep and all the others we had accidently released.
That was an interesting day.
Rose and I were known as the daredevils of the school...next thing you know, we had tried to ride the bus home, ON THE ROOF OF THE BUS.
But you know, what can you do?
Anyways...(End flashback)
Rose finished her story, of course leaving out the bus part.
They had no idea what a bus was.
Valka and Hiccup were leaning on each other for support, while Toothless rolled on the floor, cackling.
"We-we never figured out w-who won." Rose managed to gasp out through her laughter.
"Rematch!" I said weakly, holding my stomach, now hurting because of laughing.
Valka sighed contently.
"It's always nice to have a good laugh now and then," she stated.
"now, who's up for some Yak stew?"
I had no idea what a Yak was, but it sounded like beef, so I nodded, as did Rose.
"What's a Yak?" Rose hiss-whispered at me.
"Sounds like beef," I hiss-whispered back.
Anyways...
Moments later, we were seated around the large table, talking and laughing like old friends.
Valka turned to Rose and I.
"So," she said. "what brought you girls here in the first place?"
Rose and I exchanged a glance, and with a look, agreed to tell the truth..to a degree.
"We're searching for Natalia's father," Rose said. "he disappeared when she was eleven."
Hiccup looked down.
"I know how you feel," he said. "my father passed away just a few months ago."
Okay, now I felt terrible.
Hiccup's father was gone forever, whereas I had a chance of finding mine.
"I didn't know," I said apologetically.
Hiccup shrugged.
"How could you?" He asked.
"We just met."
I nodded. "True."
Valka spoke up.
"What's your father's name?" She asked. "Maybe we'll hear of him sometime."
"His name is Desmond Cowell." I said.
Hiccup choked on his water, while Valka's staff clattered to the floor.
They stared at me.
I shifted uncomfortably.
Rose sent a searching look my way, but all I could do was shrug.
Valka stood and walked closer to me, scanning my face.
Something clicked in her eyes, and she turned to face Hiccup.
"She looks exactly like him," she murmured to him. "I can't believe I didn't notice before this."
Hiccup ran a hand through his hair.
"How is this possible?" He asked seeming very frustrated. "I thought you told me he disappeared when you were a child!"
Valka nodded vigorously.
"He did," she said. "I always thought a Dragon got him! I never even thought he might have a family!"
I got really irritated then.
"Somebody please tell me what's going on!" I demanded.
They turned to me simaltaneously.
Well that was creepy.
Valka stepped forward.
"Natalia, I'm not sure how to say this." she said, looking quite unsure.
"Did you know my father??"
I asked, desperate to know anything about where he went.
Valka looked down, then straight at me.
"Natalia, your father, Desmond Cowell? He was my brother."
