Chapter 7 – A new day

<Cherrygrove City, Pokecenter>

“Come on, Isaac, wake up!” Emma shouted as she shook Isaac violently in an attempt to revive him. “If you still don’t get up, I’m leaving without you!” Emma warned.

Isaac didn’t move and continued snoring away. “Five more minutes…” He muttered.

“I give up!” Emma shouted angrily as she pushed Isaac off his bed and stormed out of the room.

-2 hours later-

“Owww, oh Arceus! My body hurts!” Isaac muttered to himself. Slowly, he shook himself awake. “Wha… What happened? And why am I on the floor?” Isaac quickly got up. Suddenly, everything that happened in the morning came back to him. “Oh no, Emma!” Isaac quickly washed up and packed all his stuff up.

“Signing off already?” The receptionist at the Pokecenter asked him.

“Yeah, I’m in a rush.” Isaac said hurriedly. He took a glance at the receptionist’s notebook and saw that Emma had already signed out earlier that morning. “Sorry for bothering you again but can you direct me to the Pokémart?”

“Sure!” The receptionist smiled.

Earlier that morning…

Emma stomped out of the Pokecenter and sighed. “I can’t believe that lazy Tepig Isaac could not get up! Can he wake up early for once?” She took another look at her map app on her Pokégear. “So, looks like I have to get through Route 30 before reaching Professor Pokémon’s house. I hope he’s all right… I wonder how Mr Stone is doing…”

She strolled slowly through the town. The town was quiet and lonely, and there was not one person in sight. As she was nearing the North exit of the city, she saw that a man was blocking the exit of the city. She looked around and noticed that there was nobody else passing through. “Sheesh, does nobody wake up early these days?” She muttered.

When Emma tried to walk past the man, he shot out his arms and blocked the way. He spoke in a gruff voice, “Sorry Missy, the road’s closed.”

“Why? Please, I have to get there quick! There is someone who might be in trouble.” Emma whined.

The man looked up and stared into her eyes. “And who might that be?”

“Professor Pokémon!”

The man suddenly perked up and reached one hand behind his belt. “Even if I want to help you, I can’t. There are construction works going on in road 30 and it’s too dangerous for little girls like you to be going there. Come back tomorrow.”

Emma considered the man. He was wearing a white lab coat and had a pair of shiny glasses on. He had a small and skinny built, no what one would expect from a ‘construction worker’. He wore a pair of boots, polished until they shown, and had a neck-tie on. He looked old – much older than her own father, that’s for sure.

Emma frowned and said, “I don’t believe you.”

“Say what?”

“If there really are construction works, then where is your hard hat? Wearing one is mandatory for all construction workers as it is a matter of life and death, so don’t give me the excuse that you forgot. And don’t get me started on your clothes. Who are you?” Emma shouted fiercely. Emma prepared her pokeball, ready to send out her Pokémon anytime.

“HAHAHahahahahahahaha! It looks like we still have some loose ends to tie up.” The man grabbed a ball from his belt and threw it at Emma. “I have been itching for a fight anyways. I choose you, Weezing!”

“Go get them, Totodile!” Emma shouted as she threw her pokeball to the battle field.

“Little girl, you’ll regret this.” He smiled. “Weezing, use your Sludge attack, now!”

“Totodile, Water Gun!

Weezing inhaled, growled and its body started vibrating. At the same time, Totodile let out a jet of water which hit Weezing right in the face.

“Ha! Take that, you stupid thing.” Emma yelled.

However, Weezing looked completely unfazed and opened its gigantic mouth, spewing out purple, goo-like toxins at Totodile, covering it completely with purple sludge. Arceus knew what was in there. Emma quickly pinched her nose upon smelling the horrendous odour which wafted everywhere. There was a sizzling noise coming from Totodile and it immediately fell back, mouth wide open.

“Humph… That’ll teach you to mess with us.” The man sneered. “Now, it’s your turn, you foolish little girl!”

“Ah, no please! Help, anyone! Totodile, please get up!” she shouted.

The man raised his hands and held out one finger. “The first rule of any trainer is to have more than one Pokémon at any one time with you. I guess even advice like this would not help you anymore. So long! Weezing, finish her off with sludge bomb, now!” The man pointed at her and shouted.

Emma immediately thought about the day before, when she received a new Pokémon from Steven Stone. She had not had the time to check it out and had totally forgotten about it until her opponent told her that trainers should carry more than one Pokémon… Which she did!

Hands trembling, she removed the pokeball from her belt and threw it on towards the Weezing. She had no idea what was going to come out when she released the Pokémon, but it was her only hope of winning the battle.

“I hope you can take that attack, go!”

‘Boom!’ Instantly, there was a brilliant flash of light and a Pokémon emerged. It had round body, four stubby legs, and a large, round head. Portions of armour covered its head, legs, and back, which has a single spike on it. Simultaneously, the enemy’s Weezing unleashed its attack, spewing more toxic on it. The purple grease engulfed the tiny steel Pokémon, but it shook it off and quickly retaliated by stabbing Weezing with its shiny claw.

Emma hastily took out her pokedex and looked at the Pokémon’s data. Aron, it was called, and the move it used was Metal Claw.

“Hahaha.” Emma smiled. “I may not know much about Pokémon, but I do know that Poison is completely ineffective against Steels. Aron, use Metal Claw again!”

“The ignorance of youth.” The man laughed as he shook his head. “How gullible.”

“Wh-What are you talking about?” Emma narrowed her eyebrows.

Aron lunged forward and attacked Weezing with its shiny metal arm, striking directly to the face. Weezing closed one eye and retreated backwards. “Grooooww…” It cried.

“Yes!”

“Oh please, you think I would be defeated by a mere child? I have not worked years as a scientist at Silph Co. for nothing you know. Poison does have a way to defeat steels. Simple chemistry, really – Acid dissolves metal. And what better Pokémon to produce acid than Weezing? Go, use Acid now!”

Weezing shivered a bit, and then it threw up a colourless liquid on to Aron. Aron bravely stood its ground, thinking it would be just fine against poison type attacks, and got hit by a direct attack.

“No! Aron!”

Where the acid touched, metal started bubbling. Aron stood still, unable to move. It had a shocked expression on its face.

“Don’t look so shocked. You were never my match.” The man nodded his head. “I see someone skipped one too many chemistry classes. By the way, do you know what the by-product of this reaction is called? Hydrogen gas. It’s a highly flammable and colourless gas. Looks like it’s game over. Weezing, use Flamethrower!”
