Chapter 1
"Hello my children!" I exclaim as I enter the barn. I'm greeted by my darling horse babies, Nako who is a beautiful brown Shire with a black mane and tail and Yuri who is a cream colored wild mustang that I trained myself. I feel like Yuri gets lonely sometimes and that maybe she needs someone that will take care of her the way I take care of Nako. Of course I still love Yuri, but I will admit that I tend to favor Nako sometimes. After feeding the two, I go to the garden and water my plants. I check my wristwatch. 7:00am. I saddle up Nako and head to work.
Work is slow as usual, because I'm basically in the middle of nowhere. Despite the area being very pretty, with vast green hills spreading for miles and an unimaginable amount of trees, the nearby city draws tourists in. For what seems like forever, I sit behind the counter tapping my fingers against the checkout counter. The door at the front opens, startling me. I snap my head up and paint a smile onto my face. In walks a woman, seemingly in her mid 30's with two small children, ages probably ranging from 5 to 8.
"Both of you pick out one thing that you want," she said, directing them towards the snack aisle. When they are out of sight, she slumps her shoulders and sighs. This is kind of awkward. There's a stressed lady in front of me, should I offer to talk about it or just ignore her?
"Long trip?" I ask.
"Yeah," she inhales deeply. "Being a single mum is as tough as it gets. If you ever get married, stick with the man. The lonely moments just get lonelier the longer you're in love than if you were alone." I look at her confusedly. I guess that makes sense, but why is she telling me this? She must have noticed my expression because in a second she was leaning against the counter with her hand held out to me.
"Sorry, that was weird. I'm Hirai Momo. What's your name?"
"Oh, I'm Watanabe Hanako. Pleasure to meet you." I took her hand and shook it with a slight smile on my face. People are nice sometimes, if they're not from the city. That population tends to be a bit more ignorant. "Where are you from?"
"I'm from Kyoto. I decided to get away from the city and do some sightseeing with my girls."
"This would be the perfect place for that. I came here to get away, too."
~Flashback~
Now that I'm almost 18, I can't wait to move to Japan. Ever since our first family trip there, I knew that's where I wanted to spend the rest of my life. I'll miss my brother and sister, but my duty is to my heart. (lol Mulan references) Airi was sad to see me go, but I explained to her that she could visit anytime and I would always be available to call.
My younger brother Haruto, on the other hand, tried to act like he didn't care. But I knew he did so I didn't take it too personally. My mum cried and my dad might have shed a few tears on the way to the airport, but before leaving I made sure to give them all a nice warm hug.
I can't remember the exact details of the flight because I made sure to stay up the whole night before in order to sleep through it. However, what I do remember is waking up to the intercom announcing that we had arrived at the Osaka National Airport. Still severely jet-lagged, I grabbed my luggage and made my way towards the bus stop that was outside of the airport. On the way to the studio apartment that I will most likely be living in for the foreseeable future, I took a nap.
Now, I know that sleeping on public transport is dangerous, but... I don't really care.
Someone was shaking my shoulder, trying to wake me up. He said something, but it was in Japanese. I started studying Japanese in middle school so I should be able to understand what he's saying, but I'm too tired.
"What?" I say in english, hoping he'll get the hint.
"O-oh," he said, shocked. He probably thought I was from around here because both of my parents are so I look like I would be too. "You have to get off now." He explained with a strong accent.
"Alright, alright. I'm up now," I yawned, looking at his face. He had a sharp chin with a beauty mark right below his lip and fierce grey eyes, complimenting his jet-black hair. Huh, not a bad looking kid, I thought as I grabbed my suitcase and walked off the bus.
