Chapter 16
I smiled widely and ran towards the car. I was shocked to see Yoshinori with a dissatisfied look on his face. I stopped abruptly in front of him.
"Hello, baby," I smiled easily just by standing in his presence.
His face was still and the happy atmosphere was now gone, and was replaced by suffocating silence.
Did I do something wrong?
Did something happen?
What is he thinking?
I couldn't seem to find an answer to any of them.
"Hey, what's up?" I asked, trying to find some sort of clue as to what was going on.
"Who was that?" He asked angrily and it scared me a little bit.
"It was just some guy..." I said quietly, taking a step back.
"Some guy? Really?" His voice got louder.
"What?" I snapped. "He had a flat tire, for pete's sake!"
"Sure." He rolled his eyes. "And how long has this been going on for?" I was shocked by his question.
"How long? I spent 20 minutes under his car, not him!" I couldn't believe how he was reacting.
"You're so fragile!" I spat.
"Tch. I should have known better than to get with a random girl that I met a month ago."
My jaw dropped at his choice of words.
"Well, fine then! Me too! Gosh, I can't beleive how stupid I was to let you into my life so easily like that!"
"Fine then, I'll leave!"
"Please do." I said coldly.
We glared at each other for a few seconds more before I turned around on my heel and stomped into my house, slamming the door behind me. Seriously, what's his deal? I felt a tear roll down my cheek and I quickly brushed it off. I don't miss him.
I felt another tear roll down my cheek. I don't miss him.No. I refuse to. I'm going to continue living my life and I'm going to do better than I ever have. All without him. If I can't handle myself without a man then what kind of woman am I?
I stood for a moment, trying to decide what to do with all this time on my hands. Eventually, I settled on giving my sister a call. Since I don't have a phone in my home, I went to the convenience store to use their phone.
I broke out into a sprint as soon as my feet touched the dirt road. The cool January breeze rushed through my hair and brushed my arms as I let myself become one with the wind. I breathed in the crisp air and listened to the sound of the gravel under my feet. Rather than wasting energy on intense workouts, you have to let yourself free. Give in to nature and that way, you'll feel more alive than you ever have.
Before I knew it, the small store was already in view. I picked up my pace --if that was even possible-- and kept my eyes focused on the rusty 7/11 sign that was barely hanging on over the rundown gas station. I pushed the door open and was not surprised to see absolutely no one there.
Not wanting to waste any time, I walked behind the counter and picked up the old telephone, dialing Airi's phone number. She answered right before it went to voicemail.
"Hello, who is this?" Her cheery voice started on the other line.
"Hey Airi, it's Hanako."
"Hanako! I miss you already."
"I know," I chuckled. "I miss you too."
"What phone are you calling from?"
"The convenience store's."
"Oh come on, why are you so cheeeaaap?" she whined.
"I don't know, why are you such a braaaaat?" What can I say? It takes two to tango.
"Okay but I feel like you didn't just call me because you missed me. Something's up."
"Bingo, my little Einstein."
"Alright." She challenged. "Hit me."
I rolled my eyes even though she couldn't see me. I think she knew anyways, though.
"Well, It all started when Yoshinori-"
"What!?" She yelled. "What did you do?"
"I didn't do anything! Now let me finish. So what happened was Yoshinori wanted to go see his family so I told him he should do that so he did. And on the last day of him being gone, there was this rando who showed up at my house with a flat tire. So, me being me, I offered to fix it. I didn't like him though, he was weird. Anyways, I fix his tire and as he's driving away, Yoshinori shows up."
"I don't see a problem here." She said, sounding bored.
"Well if you would let me finish-"
"Fine, fine, go on."
"So of course, I'm super happy to see him but he doesn't look the least bit happy to see me so I ask what's up. This man has the AUDACITY to assume that I was cheating on him! So anyways, we broke up."
"Wow, that escalated quickly."
"Yep. That's how men are. Men are trash."
"Nice to know." I heard faint voices in the background and we both went quiet for a moment.
"What's that?"
"Mum says it's time for dinner."
"Okay, I'll let you do that."
"Bye~"
"Wait!" she hummed in response.
"Don't tell anyone. Not mum, not dad, not Ruto, not even your friends at school."
"Okay, bye love you."
"Love you."
