Regulus had finally finished his last day at of his first week at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
He would never admit it but Regulus was happy. He was beyond enjoying his life at Hogwarts and seemed to finally understand why Sirius loved the place so much. Though he doubted his joy would last. While he tried his hardest to focus on himself and his school work, he couldn't keep his mind from worrying about when the weight of the external society was going to begin effecting him.
For the time being he chose to focus only on the things in front of him. After his first day, Regulus was never early to breakfast. The night after his first classes he had taught his dorm mates a basic silencing charm and the next morning he was able to sleep in because they didn't make a single sound as they got ready for the day and left to breakfast. To Regulus' dismay, the muggle born Slytherin witch Lily Evans was always waiting for him in the common room and insisted on walking to breakfast with him. She even went as far as attempting to regularly sit with him except she was constantly being pulled away by her unbathed half-blood arse-kissing of a best friend.
There was one upside to her presence- aside from her undeniable beauty and charm- and it was her inability to stop talking.
The girl ranted on for the entirety of her meal until she was whisked away by others.
Regulus reveled in this fact about her. Firstly, it meant he didn't have to do any talking- but he would chime in hums of response- and that meant he wasn't technically a blood traitor. Secondly, she had no regard for other secrets, or maybe she did but she assumed by how little Regulus talked that he was a safe box of secrets. Thirdly, despite being Slytherin she knew a lot about the four Gryffindors Regulus had spent his very first Hogwarts Express ride with.
In the half hour it took Lily to finish her food everyday for the last seven days, Regulus had learned more about James Potter than he would have ever expected.
Breakfast on his first Saturday at Hogwarts wasn't much different than breakfast during the school week. Except for the fact that he was wearing slacks and a plain black sweater instead of his uniform. Lily Evans was sitting beside him in a beautiful sundress with her hair in gorgeous braids and Regulus would never deny finding her attractive.
She was ranting about her Herbology quiz on the upcoming Monday when Emmeline Vance slid onto the bench beside Regulus. This signaled the end of her breakfast and chatting with her housemates. Regulus turned to Lily who was just finishing her plate as she wiped her mouth and said," Emmeline!" with a bright smile," I'm so glad you're here! I don't think I'm going to be stolen away today would you like to hang out?"
If Regulus wasn't such a deep thinker, sentences like that would just roll off his shoulder, except in his head all he could hear were the words 'stolen away' as if she liked hanging out with Regulus and was being forced to mingle with others. He shook his head, why should she enjoy his company when he's been nothing but dry to her?
"I would love that! I feel like I haven't seen you in days Reg," the black haired Ravenclaw agreed with a nudge to Regulus' shoulder. It was true. It was difficult enough being in different houses, but Regulus and Emmeline only had one class together and it was History of Magic which was a strictly no talking class. They tried to meet up for lunch and dinner but between their clashing schedules, different friend groups, and early curfew they typically only saw each other for around ten minutes after breakfast and before classes.
"Do you mind if we go to the library? I have homework to finish," Regulus asked as he finished up the fresh fruit on his plate and when they both nodded the three of them slipped out of the bench and began to leave the hall.
"Emme, do you want to grab your books and we can meet at the library?" Lily asked as she leaned around Regulus to look at the Ravenclaw girl, who shook her head telling them that she would just join them for the fun of it and that she didn't have any work to do.
Lily Evans had began to make a habit of sliding her arm around Regulus' and linking their elbows. Originally he was opposed to the idea but another thing he had learned throughout the week about her was the reason that all of the Slytherins- even the purists like Lucius- liked or at least tolerated Lily despite the fact that she was a muggle-born was because she was incredibly gifted. She wasn't as quick of a thinker as Regulus but she did know a lot more than him and she was insanely headstrong that whenever someone would question her blood status or look at her funny she would chase them off. Regulus likes that she wasn't afraid to jinx someone- although so far it's only been threats and he's never actually seen her take action against someone.
When they reached the dungeons and spoke the password one of the Slytherin Prefects were coming out of the common room and they instructed that Emmeline wait outside. She didn't protest and told the two that she would hang outside then begged for them not to take too long.
Lily burst through the common room nearly knocking someone over to reach the girls dorm, whereas Regulus took his sweet time. He walked lazily up the small set of stairs to his shared room. When he got in he wasn't surprised to see all three of his roommates inside sitting on their beds chatting away- to which they abruptly stopped when he walked in.
In his first week at Hogwarts he had noticed that they all became fast friends and that they were also massive losers. If they weren't in classes they were in their room playing obscure muggle games that one of them had brought with them from home. Regulus was sure there was some God out in the universe looking to spite him when he first found out that two of them were muggle-born and very proud of it and the other was a half-blood who quite literally had a fear of magic.
He didn't know why he said it. It wasn't like he owed them any curtesy of what he was doing in his own room, yet his mouth opened with," I'm just grabbing some homework."
All three of them nodded and then turned to stare at each other wiggling their noses and eyebrows as if communicating strictly through their faces. Then unexpectedly one of them turned to Regulus. Andy, the half-blood terrified to practice magic, shuffled to the end of his bed and informed him shyly," we are going to be playing some card games tonight, if you want to join us."
It was silent in the room for two solid minutes as Regulus sorted through his books to pull out only the pages he had to finish. He continued to shuffle around the room and finally when he was walking out of the room, he turned to them and said in a way that was exceptionally plain with a condescendingly polite tone," no thank you. Maybe another time," and left.
For the first time in a week Lily wasn't waiting for him in the common room. When Regulus exited the dungeons she and Emmeline were sitting on a bench not too far away laughing with each other as they waited for him.
When they had gotten to the library they walked around the main area twice to determine which of the open tables would be best for them. They settled for a small square table for four people. Regulus sat first sprawling his books out on the table and the two girls jinxed themselves as they asked each other to sit next. While she wasn't doing any work of her own, Emmeline sat at the table with them with her feet propped up on the edge of the table. She sat beside Regulus and watched the other students as they worked or passed around the shelves.
Regulus didn't want to seem like he was excluding his friend as he did his work so he called for her attention, pointing to his Gargoyle Strike essay homework, and asked," you finished this right?"
"No," she responded as she waved to another Ravenclaw girl across the library.
"What do you mean no? You said you finished all of your homework?" Lily questioned putting her books down on the table space in front of Emmeline, sliding into the seat across her.
"I usually do my homework last minute and get all the answers right anyways," Emme said as if that made complete sense, so why should she do her work ahead of time.
Lily scoffed loudly and put her fingers to her head with a sigh," that's not how that works," she pointed out," you're supposed-"
But she closed her mouth when suddenly the fourth chair at their table was filled. Across from Regulus, and to the sides of Emmeline and Lily, was a new body. It was a boy, a special one that made Regulus' heart stop for a mere second before starting again.
"What are you doing here, Potter?"
