With their ceremony cut short, it was time for them to clean up and salvage the food they had yet to eat. The soldiers of Siera's legion were serving penance for their short act of treason. Although less severe, they still needed to pay for their sins against him. They were ordered to serve 2 months penance in the sulphur pits before they could return to their families. Each one was given one hour with them before they had to report to their sentence. He only granted it due to Nila requesting it. Had she not, they would have been sent straight there for their part of the disturbance and they would have been glad for his leniency in their sentence. His staff cleaned everything up with Nila as he dealt with the soldiers. He sat at his desk looming over the files of each soldier, deciding that once they served their time, he would offer them a position at his own army for their otherwise stellar record. He rubbed at his temples, wondering how men with such stellar records could be willing to serve under someone with such a nasty soul. He would call one from the sulphur pits to ask what they had been thinking, he decided. As he sat, looking over files when his office door opened to reveal Nila still wearing her gown from their ceremony. His heart swelled with pride at the sight of her as he beckoned for her to come to him. She walked to him, allowing him to pull her into his lap. He held her for a short time without saying anything before deciding that she may need to get what happened off her chest.
"What is the matter love?"
"I was worried you would be angry with me."
"About what happened at our ceremony?"
"Yes that."
"What part is it you are worried about?"
"Well.. I did throw a knife into your ex girlfriend's chest. I did not know how you would handle that and since you've been locked up in your office since then I thought you were angry with me."
"No, love, I am not angry at you for that. I am angry that you felt the need to do that. I am angry that she did not heed my warnings and showed up to ruin the ceremony but I am not angry that you did it. She deserves much worse than what she is getting and I hope the century she must spend in her own personal hell will set her to straights before her soul is released. I have been going through the soldiers' files to see what they were prior to her personal legion. I do not understand how these soldiers came to be with her. They all had stellar records up to today. I am thinking I will call one up to my office to discuss how this happened. What do you think?"
"You... You are asking me for my opinion?"
"Yes why would I not?"
"Well I am a woman. In life, no one valued the opinion of a woman in such matters."
"Well I am asking for your opinion."
"I feel it would be beneficial to find out why they ended up with her. I also believe if their records were stellar up to this point that they would be loyal to you, depending of course on why they were with her."
"Ah, that was my thoughts as well. A fine warrior wife you are my dear. The guards are eager for you to begin training with them on the morrow. Are you ready?"
"I can not wait to start."
"Good. Now would you like to sit in on my meeting or would you like to go get cleaned up and ready for bed?"
"I should like to go wash up for bed if you don't mind."
"Not at all. I will see you when I am done here. Should not be long."
With a brief kiss, Nila left the office to go to their shared room. He wondered how he could have gotten so lucky as to find her in his dreary life of sorting souls. After she left, he dialed a number and getting an answer after the first ring. He spoke with his guard to the sulphur pits about the soldiers he had sent down. They were not happy but serving their penance with dignity, he said. After telling him to send one of them to his office, he hung up and leaned back in his chair to wait. Not long after, there was a tentative knock on the door. He granted entrance, one of the soldiers entering with fear showing in his eyes even with a steady gaze pointed down at his desk.
"Have a seat, we have something to discuss."
"Yes, M'lord?"
"Tell me, why would you be with the likes of Seira with such a stellar record? As far as I can see, you all had nearly perfect records up until today."
"I would rather not say sir."
"I would much rather you did. I would like to know what she could have offered for you to ruin such shining records for her."
"Well, I was not faithful to my wife and she found out about my infidelity. She said in return for her silence, I would have to serve in her private army and do as she wished. My one mistake ended up getting me stuck on her private detail. I love my wife and there isn't a thing I wouldn't do for her but we had a time when we were not doing so well and I had a lapse in judgment. It was many years ago now and for her to find out now would hurt her so I joined. My best guess is that the others have similar situations that she exploited to get her private guard."
"So, you do not believe any of you were there willingly then?"
"I do not believe so, no sir."
"Well, okay then. Return to the pits until you hear otherwise. You will be seeing me again."
"Yes sir of course."
