Duke has dinner at yours

You, your mum and Duke are all sat round the table eating. "Thank you Debby, this food is amazing." Duke says after eating a few mouthfuls. "Yeah thanks mum, it is." you say as well. "Thank you guys, I worked hard on making this meal. I'm glad you enjoy it." Your mum says smiling at you and Duke. "So Duke, you said you've only been here a little longer then us, where's your hometown?" You mum says while getting more food on her fork. "My family's from Utah and I used to live in Salt Lake City, how about you?" Duke says looking at your mum. "Oh nice! We're from West Jordan, which I think is only a 20 minute drive from Salt Lake." Your mum says looking at Duke and then looking at you, surprised. "So is your family all still in Utah?" Your mum asks Duke. "Um yeah my family is still in Utah so I don't see them very much apart from over FaceTime but sometimes I can't even call where I'm so busy with TikTok and trying to film for YouTube. I'm not as close with my family a before," Duke goes silent. You see his eyes welling up and he looks down. You put your hand on his leg and he looks at you and smiles. "I guess that's part of growing up though." He says. "That's the same with our family," you say, "eventually it'll be worth it though. Something good will always come out if it." You say to try and lighten the mood. Duke smiles and says back "yeah it does, I would've never met you y/n," he says smiling at you "and I never would've had this amazing meal." He says while winking at your mum and you all laugh.

After you've all finished eating you carry the plates over to the sink. "Did you want to stay any longer Duke? My husband, Ryan, will be home soon and we'll probably all watch a film." Your mum says to Duke. "Thank you for the offer Debby but I feel like I'd just be in the way of your family." Duke says, while looking at you and your mum. "Oh don't be  silly Duke, you definitely won't be in the way, we could do with a little more company. If you're busy then by all means go, but we would really love for you to stay if you want." Your mum says back to Duke and puts her hand on his shoulder. Duke looks at you and you shrug your shoulders and mouth the words "it's up to you". Duke thinks for a minute and then says "I should probably be getting back so I can edit some videos and upload to Tiktok. Thank you though, Debby." Your mum takes her hand off his shoulder and says "alright, it was nice having you over for dinner, Duke. Maybe you can come over another day for a bit longer, I'm sure y/n would love that." Your mum says smirking at you. You go bright red and look straight down at the floor. "I'm sure she would, Debby," Duke says laughing "anyway thanks for having me, it was nice getting to talk to you. Thank you for the meal as well, it was amazing." You walk Duke out while your mum goes to wash up. You and Duke stand outside and pull the door together a bit. "Thanks for coming over, it was fun." You say to Duke. "No, thank you for having me over." Duke says to you as you stare into his eyes. "I'm sorry about my mum bring up your family by the way. I didn't know it made you feel like that." You held Duke hand and just looked at him. "No it's fine, nobody really knows about it. I have over 100 texts so I can never get round to messaging my family back but then they think I'm ignoring them." Duke goes quiet again and looks down. "I understand. Listen, your family knows you wouldn't purposely ignore them and they know you love them so much. You're an adult with a full time job so they're gonna understand when you don't message back." You say to him, now holding both of his hands. You try looking into his eyes again but he's looking at the floor so you put your hand under his chin and gently push his head up. You stare into each others eyes and you see a tear roll down his face. He clears his throat and says "I should probably get going now." You can hear in his voice how upset he is so you lean up and kiss him on the forehead. He smiles at you but then looks back down at the floor when he walks away. You wave to him as the elevator doors close and then you walk back into your apartment.

"Y/n," you hear your mum call you so you walk over to her. "Did I say something wrong when we was eating? I feel like I made Duke really upset, he looked sad for most of the meal." Your mum says to you, wistfully. "Um yeah, he's sensitive talking about his family because he doesn't get to see them or talk to them much so he's worried they think he's ignoring them. Don't worry about it though, it wasn't your fault because you didn't know, I didn't even know either." You say back to your mum. She sighs and says back to you "oh really? I didn't mean to. I was just trying to make conversation. I'm really sorry.". You look at her and say "it's alright, just don't bring it up again.". You go to your room and decide to scroll through TikTok.
