The talk

"What's that mark on your neck?" You hear your mum say as you walk through the door. You panic and end up saying "oh I straightened my hair earlier and accidentally burned myself" your mum stares for a minute and then says "oh, ok" but you can tell by her voice that she doesn't believe you. You go to your room and try to avoid your mum so she doesn't mention it again.

You sit on your bed with your back against the wall. You get out your phone and start messaging Duke.

*messages*
You: hey Duke. I'm really sorry that my mum called earlier, I promise it won't happen again

Duke: it's fine, honestly. I did kinda over react, I know it's not your fault

You: I know but I feel bad because I don't want you to think I'm avoiding doing it with you

Duke: honestly y/n I'm happy to just hang out like we normally do and the right time will just come when it does

You: alright, I guess you're right. You'll never guess what my mum said literally as soon as I walked into my apartment

Duke: oh gosh, what did she say?

You: she asked me what the mark was on my neck so I told her I accidentally burned myself 😭 she's definitely onto us though

Duke: haha, at least she didn't keep asking 😭💀

You: yeah 😭 anyway I'm gonna go to sleep but we can talk tomorrow if you want

Duke: yeah sounds good. I don't feel like doing anything tomorrow but we can message or call. Goodnight y/n, sleep well

You: alright speak to you tomorrow then. Goodnight Duke

*back to normal*
You fall asleep with your phone in your hand and you think of Duke as you drift off.

Your alarm starts screaming at you and your eyes instantly widen. You get up and have a shower and then you get changed. As you walk into the kitchen to make a bowl of cereal, you notice your mum sat on the couch with her coffee, staring at you. You try to ignore it so you carry on making your breakfast. As you go to sit down and eat your mum says your name. You sit down next to her and ask if everything's ok. She takes a sip of coffee and says "I know you didn't burn your neck, the marks from Duke." You go red and say "it was nothing, don't worry" but your mum carries on talking about it. "Listen, you and Duke can do whatever but just make sure you stay safe. Does he use condoms?" Shocked at what she said, you say "MUM!" She chuckles and says "it's all normal so I'm not sure why your getting defensive. If he doesn't want to use a condom then we can try some sort of birth control for you." You get redder the more she talks about it. Eventually, you shout "we haven't done anything yet because you keep interrupting!" Your mum goes silent. "You don't need to call all the time, ok? I'm old enough to make decisions for myself and look after myself. Me and Duke just want to hang out and do whatever but we can't because you keep calling every time I'm there so can you just text next time please." You felt good after saying all of that but then you notice your mum. "I've already lost your dad to another woman so I don't want to lose you to some boy." You can see your mum is holding back tears. "Wait, dad cheated?" You don't want to believe it but you know it's true. "I'm sorry y/n for constantly calling, I'll make sure to just message. I've got to go to the shop, I'll see you in a bit." Your mum gets up and leaves. You don't try to stop her because you know she just needs space.

*messages*
You: hey Duke

Duke: hey y/n, is everything alright?

You: yeah I just found out why my parents spilt up so I'm not great but it's fine

Duke: do you want me to come over?

You: no it's fine, you wanted a day to yourself

Duke: well I'll see you in 10 minutes

You: where are you? It doesn't take that long to get here

Duke: I'm at the shop buying something for someone, see you soon

You: wait, you wanted the day to yourself so don't bother coming over

You: Duke?

You: Duke???

*back to normal*
Duke still doesn't answer your messages so you decide to just distract yourself from thinking of your dad. You finish your breakfast and then brush your teeth. You start scrolling on TikTok and then go into Dukes account so his videos can cheer you up.

A few minutes later there's a knock at the door. You put your phone down on the couch without locking it. You answer the door and see Duke standing there with a box of chocolates. He doesn't say anything, he just smiles and hands you the chocolates. "Thanks but I told you not to come" you say to him. He still doesn't say anything but he smiles more and walks straight in. You smile a little bit because his smile is so cute but then you walk up to him and ask what he's doing. He sits on your couch and picks up your phone. He sees the TikTok you was watching and says "so clearly you wanted me here" and he laughs. He pats the space next to him gesturing for you to go at sit with him. You can't resist because he's being so cute so you go and sit down. He puts his arm around you and you lean in closer to him and put your head on his shoulder. You feel like crying but you hold it back. Duke starts stroking your check and rubbing your arm and, without meaning to, a tear rolls down your cheek. Duke wipes the tear away and asks if you're okay. You think for a minute and then just shake your head. More tears come pouring out but you can't control it. Duke holds you tighter and leans his head on yours while whispering into your ear "everything's gonna be okay". That relaxes you because you trust anything that he says. After 30 minutes you drift off but Duke stays awake.

You wake up to your mum and Duke talking. You want to know what they're talking about so you pretend to still be asleep. "Um... so Duke, I've noticed the marks your leaving on y/n's neck and I'm completely fine with it but I want to make sure you're staying safe so while I was at the shop I picked something up for you." You hear the rustling of a bag and then you hear Duke say "oh, um thank you". You want to know what it is but you don't want them to know you're awake so you wait to see if they say what it is. You wait for another minute and then Duke says "sorry but I think these are the wrong size. It's alright though, they might fit." Now you really want to know what they're talking about but you still don't want them to know you was listening. "Oh sorry Duke. I can go get a different size, do you need bigger or smaller?" You can tell by Dukes voice that he's uncomfortable so you decide to pretend to wake up so Duke doesn't have to talk about whatever it was anymore. As you stretch and sit up your mum takes back the box from Duke and puts it back in the shopping bag but you didn't see what it was a box of. When Duke sees you're awake he turns and smiles at you and your mum says "right, I'll leave you two alone for now. I'll be in my room if you need me or if you want the place to yourself then I'll go out." You tell her that she doesn't need to leave the apartment if she doesn't want to so then she just goes to her room.

"That was probably the most awkward conversation I've had with someone" Duke says while laughing. You laugh and say "what was you talking about?" Duke blushes a bit and then says "she was telling me that she knows that I gave you hickeys and she is fine with us doing stuff but she wants us to be safe." You laugh and say "yeah she said the same to me last night. I saw her take something from you and put it in a bag, what was it?" Duke goes bright red and clears his throat "oh it was nothing, don't worry." He then gets up and gets you and him a drink and doesn't speak about the conversation anymore.
