Callie Atwood is just a 25-year-old from the Upper West Side of New York City. Finding a job has always been a struggle for her so when she gets an opportunity to do the one thing she excels at, fighting, she takes it. Her matches have given her just enough to make a living, and a little more. One day she's offered a big gig at an upper-class ring.

In the meantime, the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., Nick Fury, is on the hunt for a new recruit for the Avengers. He happens to be in the area when he hears of a large fighting match happening that night. Out of curiosity, he checks out the competitors and that's when he comes across Callie Atwood.

After seeing her skill, Fury takes a liking to her and offers her a position as an Avenger. She accepts and becomes one of Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

Everything is going perfectly until one day, Callie is captured by one of the Avengers' worst enemies, Hydra. They give her powers and she becomes their greatest weapon, Vertigo.
