"You're a hero." I hear Private Lorraine practically purr at Steve from my private spot. Call me crazy but the only place anyone can get peace in this place is basically in the vents, like a hawk. So that's why I perch myself, high up, away from the chaos of the SSR. I'm snapped out of my reverie by Peggy's voice, "Captain!", she says in a clearly surprised voice. I drop down from my spot and assess the situation. Steve's tie is askew and Private Lorraine's wearing a smug expression. Based off of the rage and jealousy emanating from Peggy, the bitch kissed him. I motion for Peggy to walk ahead, which she does with Steve trailing behind like a scolded puppy.
I turn myself towards Lorraine, "Remind me again of your job Private." I state, shoulders back and arms straight. She awkwardly squirms, which I revel in, before muttering "Secretary to Colonel Phillips ma'am." I narrow my eyes and lean closer to the woman, "Last time I checked Private, sticking your tongue down the throat of a soldier was not part of that job description. So I suggest you keep that tongue in your own mouth before you no longer have it." I sneer. I'm fully aware that my reaction is somewhat extreme but she hurt Peggy, so all of my cares have been tossed in the proverbial waste basket.
As I return to Steve and Peggy I catch the end of Peggy's sentence about Steve not knowing a 'bloody thing about women'. I snicker to myself, and with a raised eyebrow turn to Steve who's standing like a fish out of water and ask, "What on earth did you say to her?" He frowns and his mouth opens and closes repeatedly before saying, "I sort of implied that her and Howard were, uh, you know..." He motions with his hands to his lower regions at the end of his sentence. I practically chortle at his obliviousness, "What? You think Howard and Peggy are having sex?!" I stumble out through laughs. A sheen of pink covers Steve's face as he murmurs something about fondue before he walks into the room ahead.
"The moment you think you know what's goin' on in a woman's head is the moment your goose is well and truly cooked." Howard explains to Steve as we walk towards the table covered with weapons. "He's not too far off." I add with a smile. Howard continues, "Me, I concentrate on work. Which at the moment is about making sure you and your men do not get killed." I clear my throat, although I'm not sure whether it's at his disregard for me as a woman on the team, or the fact that he believes we believe him when he says his work is his focus. He knocks on a body piece on the table, "Carbon polymer", he states, "Should withstand your average German bayonet. Although Hydra's not going to attack you with a pocket knife." He mocks. "Ya think?" I scoff. "Should be enough for most of these men though, any protection against Hydra is protection worth having." I sigh.
Steve's shield is perched on the edge of the table, and Steve is practically staring at it as if it's a newborn child. "I hear you're uh... kinda attached?" Howard tests. Steve runs his hand over the shield and murmurs, "It's handier than you might think." I scoff, "We can see that on your face Stevie. I asked Howard to come up with some stronger alternatives, every hero needs a signature right? And it pretty much epitomises you to make yours a shield." I say. Steve turns to me, "What do you mean?" I smile and run my fingers over the options, "Well you know, you're not really the poster child of violence, you're the only person I know who'd instinctively choose defense over offense." I explain to which everyone in the room mutters an agreement. Howard talks Steve through a few of the enhancements of the shields but Steve seems to be distracted by something else.
"What about this one?" He asks, picking up a round, silver looking shield. "No! No! That's just a prototype." Howard exclaims. "What's it made of?" Steve questions, getting a feel for the shield already. "Vibranium." Howard states, catching my attention. "It's stronger than steel and a third of the weight. It's completely vibration absorbent." He finishes. Steve looks at the shield in awe. "How come it's not standard issue?" He asks, admiring the lightweight feel of the metal. "It's the rarest metal on earth." I chime in. Howard nods, "What you're holding there? That's all we've got." As Steve continues to check out the shield Peggy appears and asks, "You quite finished, Mr. Stark? I'm sure the Captain has some unfinished business." A subtle bitterness lacing her words which makes me smirk. Steve, still has oblivious as ever, holds the shield against his body, "What do you think?" he asks proudly. My eyes catch Peggy reach for a gun and before anyone else can notice or react she empties it at Steve's shield. He immediately ducks against it as everyone else in the room ducks for cover, I simply stand there with my arms folded and eyebrows raised at Peggy. "Yes. I think it works." She concludes before walking off.
Steve and I join Howard again at a table, "What do you got for me Howie?" I ask. He rolls his eyes at my nickname for him and shows me an array of choices. The table in front of me holds a new bandolier, at least seven new knives, a set of katanas, three handguns, and a set of batons. I smile and elbow Howard gently in thanks before picking up and examining my new knives. Whilst Steve and Stark discuss the options for his uniform all I can think of is showing off my new knives to Bucky.
