After Erskine leaves the bunk I tell him I'm going to stay with Steve for a while longer, he nods in understanding and says goodnight. I stand in the doorway and watch as Steve runs his hands over his face and sighs. "You know you don't have to do this right?" I say gently, watching as Steve's head shoots up. He sees the look in my eyes and knows that I'm not here to convince him otherwise, I'm genuinely concerned. I stride over to his bed, sit next to him and pull him in for a hug. I don't hug, that's not me, but something in me knew that Steve needed comfort, reassurance that it'd all be okay.

After a while he speaks up, "Did it hurt?" he asks. I furrow my brows, "Did what hurt?". He looks at me softly and says, "Whatever happened to you before you came here?" My breath hitches and my jaw clenches. "How did you know something happened to me ostanovka?" Steve sighs, pulls away from the hug and replies, "The scars, the distant look in your eyes, how tense you just were." I laugh softly and contemplate my answer, I take a few moments and simply replied "Yes." Steve picked up on my tone and dropped the subject. "Are you scared Steve?" I ask, curious as to why he seems so hesitant. "What if it doesn't work Agent Somerfield?" He asks, "What if I don't survive? What if I don't get back to Bucky? What if-" I cut him off. "No more what if's Steve, and for the last time call me Victoria. I can see that you have that bit of 'I want to save the world' in you, that's why you're here.", I say gently, "But I want you to know that it's okay if you only save one person, and it's okay if that person is you."

The look in Steve's eyes makes me understand exactly why James is so protective over him, he just wants to help. He wants to help in anyway he can, have pride in his actions and prove to himself that he's good enough. He sniffles softly and I wrap my arm around him again. He mutters a muffled "Thank you Vicky." as I run my hand up and down his back. "Anytime Stevie," I reply with a soft smile, "now you get some sleep. We got more of you for the world to see yet." I stand to leave and Steve reaches for my wrist, "Tell Bucky I said you can stay." I laugh sweetly and head back to mine and Peggy's bunk, nodding my goodnight to Steve.

"How is he?" Peggy questions as I get ready for bed. "He's nervous, understandably. He'll be okay though, I know it. He's stronger than he knows." I confirm, "I can see why you've taken a liking to him." I add with a smirk. Peggy shakes her head gently, failing to hide the smile on her face. I grasp her hands in mine and kneel in front of her, "Don't let this one go pchelka." She looks at me, "I won't I promise, what about you?" I sit back onto my bed, "What about me Peg?" She scoffs, "What are you gonna do without me when I'm with Steve?" I laugh, "I've found my soldier pchelka, don't you worry about me." Peggy lies back in her own bed, "You should really watch your Russian you know, people'll start thinking you're an enemy." I roll my eyes, "Not anymore." I say before Peggy drifts off to sleep.

I pull out my pen and paper and write my reply to James' last letter:

Dear James,

This may sound crazy having only known you a few weeks but I've truly never felt something as pure and beautiful as our connection. Your letters make my day, so does imagining your smile but that's beside the point. You see, I've never been one to believe in happiness, not like this, yet you continue to prove me wrong with every word you write James Barnes. I want nothing more than to wake up in your arms, for people to know that I am yours as you are mine. And still there is so much you do not know about me, I may not be what you expect me to be, the girl you met that night, but I hope I can be enough for you nonetheless.

Please return to Steve and I as soon as possible, we miss you terribly. Stay safe my Sergeant.

Forever Yours,

                    Victoria.

P.S Steve said I can stay

I seal the letter away and place it in the outpost before crawling into bed, letting the memories of James' arms around me lull me into a gentle slumber. A slumber I am rarely granted.
